When ever I've been stopped they always ask me if I have any firearms or weapons in the car...not a stretch to ask about bomb materials. It just escalates from personal safety for the officer to public safety. . .not a leap in this day & age.
As far as to the search, forget that. I used to say sure (note: extremely small sample group here), but since I took a law class at school, I feel it's important to not grant permission even if I have nothing to hide. It's a matter of my rights, and protecting them.
