A.J. Patton racked up 243 total yards (165 rush, 78 rec) and scored two touchdowns, leading the 49ers to a 41-19 victory over the Barnstormers in Super Bowl XLIV.
“It’s so darn frustrating,” said Iowa quarterback
Roman Roberts, who left the game early in the second quarter with a strained hamstring. “We had them where we wanted them, and then everything fell apart.”
Iowa drew first blood on a 27-yard
Jim Lane field goal, but San Francisco put up 10 points to take the lead. The Barnstormers responded with Roberts’ only touchdown pass of the day and a 46-yard field goal to take a 13-10 advantage with 7:09 left in the second quarter. Unfortunately, that was the last time that Iowa would score until getting six points on two field goals in the closing minutes of the game. The 49ers, however, would put up 28 points before then.
“These guys played with a lot of heart,” said head coach
Travis O’Donnell . “All we can do now is look to next year and try to improve on this great season.”
