There is just a light dusting of snow as the players walk out onto the cold FedExField to challenge for the greatest game on Earth.

The Bengals win the toss and choose to receive.

In an ominous sign for the Bengals, they chose to run the ball out of the end zone, despite receiving the ball 6 yards deep. They only get out as far as the 13 yard line. In the drive the Bengals can’t seem to move the ball well on first or second downs, but they quite successful on third. On their first 4 sets of downs, they faced 3rd and long 3 times and on each of them they converted. They were able to move the ball as far down as the 24 yard line where they faced a 3rd and 10. They managed to scoop up 8 yards, but not enough for the first down. 4th and 2 from the 16 yard line. Conventional wisdom says kick the ball and take the points, But with Al coble on your side, you know that you can pick up 2 measly yards, right? Wrong! On fourth down Coble is stuffed fir a 2 yard loss and the ball goes over on downs.

The teams traded punts a few times, with the Bengals slowly gaining more field position. But Washington took control of the lead with a beautiful big play drive. Only one play in the whole 7 play, 80 yard drive was for less than 10 yards (there was a 10 yard penalty in there). Washington never even faced a third down situation as they took the lead on a 23 yard TD run by Mount. 7-0 Washinton

The Bengals responded with a big drive of their own. 7 plays with a big third down conversion that saw little involvement of Al Coble. But just as the Bengals looked poised to strike, the Redskins picked off a pass and returned it all the way to the Cincinnati 26. Percy earned one first down, before an onslaught of penalties moved that ball back to the 30 yard line, negating two 10 yard passes. The Redskins were willing to settle for the 3 though, and when the kick split the uprights, Washington was up 10-0

After a couple of punts, the Bengals new that they needed to get moving if they were going to have any hope of staying in the game. With the ball at their own 41 Al was able to break free for a 33 yard run that brought the ball down to the 26. But they could get no closer. This time the Bengals were willing to settle for the 3 points.

Washington began to move the ball again just prior to the 2 minute warning, but several consecutive penalties killed the drive. On 3rd down Percy was able to complete a pass for 19 yards and still it wasn’t close to a first down, and they were force to punt.

With 1:50 left in the half, Cincinnati was 89 yards away from a tie game. But three incomplete passes wouldn’t help the cause any. It not only got them nowhere, but it gave Washington the time it needed for one more drive. With 1:17 left, Washington used several big Percy Buchanan passes to get the ball into field goal range. With time running out and no time outs left, Washington chose to kick on 3rd down to expand their lead to 13-3.

Half time
After a 2 day festival of all of the latest pop music stars, followed by a one day concert of the all-time greats of country music (including the clone of Hank Williams Sr.) the game is back under way.

Washington receive the ball in the second half, but facing third and one from the 33 Washington’s receiver picked up the first down and 12 more yards, but fumbled the ball. Challenged the ruling on the field, but to no avail.

The first big break of the day for the Bengals and they were looking to capitalize. Several passes and a couple of key Al coble runs moved the ball down to the 8 yard line, where the Bengals promptly threw their second INT in the Red Zone, and to the same safety no less.

Washington then proceeded to thoroughly demoralize the Bengals by marching the ball right down the field, mostly on beautiful Percy Buchanan passes, as well as a big run by the former starting RB, Hutchens for 36 yards down to the 4 yard line. On the very next play Percy tosses a four yard lob to his TE to further expand the lead, 20-3 Washington

The Bengals were not ready to throw in the towel just yet though. For the second consecutive drive the Bengals moved the ball almost at will, but this time they didn’t turn it over in the redzone. Instead they handed the ball to Al Coble from the 10 yard line and let him plow his way into the end zone to cut the lead to just 10. 20-10 Washington.

Washington could do nothing on the next drive and were forced to punt after 3 plays.

The Redskins then helped the Bengals quite a bit with 4 penalties in 3 plays, making a great punt practically meaningless and breathing new life into the Bengals. The drive did stall before field goal range though…or was it. The redskins lined up for a 58 yard kick, but the kick was short and Washington’s two score lead was preserved.

With the missed field goal, Washington was given the ball in great field position, and they used a big run followed by a 24 yard TD strike from Percy to again pad their lead, 27-10. Time was running out for the Bengals.

Cincinnati’s next drive started on a good note. A 45 yard pass moved the ball all the way to the Washington 27. But after 3 strait incompletes, the Bengals again go for the first down rather than the field goal. Facing 3rd and 10, Cincinnati was able to trow a pass for 9 yards…and they turned it over on downs.

Now with time running out, Washington turned to their crew of RBs to eat up the clock. There crew was not only able to use 12 plays to eat up 5:29, but they were also able to get the ball into position for another field goal. 30-10 Washington.

With just over 3 minutes left in the game, Cincinnati made a statement that they were not going to go down without a fight. They used 4 plays and just over a minute to cover the distance of the field and cut the lead by 7. 30-17. Cincinnati’s only hope was to recover the onside kick. But alas it was not to be. Washington recovered the kick. After two runs, Percy threw a 12 yard pass fir a first down that sealed the game as the Bengals had no more timeouts. Final 30-17. The MVP was the safety Branch who had 2 redzone INTs.

Al Coble had 14 carries for 96 yards and 1 TD. Not a bad performance at all. Had the game been a bit closer they may have used him more.

Percy finished another great game, 20 of 31 for 249 yards, 2 TDs and 0 INT
