Youth Pull

We didn’t have the same kind of fortune with the youth squad this week that we have seen recently. Although Zhi Wing-Ning certainly has an entertaining name, he will never be a professional soccer player. Valued at only $16,000, he has passable passing skill, but no skills above weak in any of the primary skills. Zhi has told us that he plans to go back to college. We wish him well.

Other Notes

Smiths United, a team from England’s 5th division, is currently the leading bidder for the services of Max Dodge at $52,500. This means that we effective have $500,000 in the bank, $200,000 of which I am looking to spend on players. We are currently scouring the transfer market for another defensive trainee, as well as a possible improvement at midfield as well.

Also, the schedule for the first part of the 2nd Windy City Cup has been established. The tournament contains 32 teams, with the first round being group play similar to the format of the World Cup. Our 3 week schedule for group play looks like this:

2/12/03 – at Northern Lazies (Series III.1)
2/19/03 – vs. The Prestidigitators (Series V.52)
2/26/03 – vs. High Tops (Series V.28)

The Northern Lazies are expected to sweep group play and earn one of the top seeds in the Round of 16, and we fully expect to lose to them on Wednesday. Their second team would be a good match for our starters, and should dominate our reserves. The other two matches are definitely winnable, though, especially because we’re at home. We should be able to earn a spot in the Round of 16.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish luck to the Gargoyles and the Galesburg Avengers, who are participating in the Windy City Cup as well. Unfortunately, none of us were placed in the same group.

Up Next: We have what should be an easy match this Sunday, as we visit the 7th place Cariocas team in Miami. Stay tuned!
