Jets Sign Robinson

Jets sign WR Marcus Robinson to one-year contract

May 2, 2003

Hempstead, NY - Two weeks after being released by the Chicago Bears, Marcus Robinson has landed with the New York Jets.

The Miami Dolphins also were courting the veteran receiver, but Robinson signed a one-year contract with the Jets on Thursday.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Robinson had just 21 catches for 244 yards last season after coming off major knee surgery. He was scheduled to make $2.6 million in the final year of his contract and was waived by the Bears on April 16 for salary cap purposes.

"Marcus will provide veteran experience to our receiving corps and he will be one year removed from his knee surgery," said Jets general manager Michael Marra. "Our experience with players coming off surgery is that in the second year they seem to be able to get back to the level of performance thet were playing at before the surgery. If that is the case with Marcus, this will be a really nice addition for us."

Robinson owns the Bears record for receiving yards in a season with 1,400 in 1999, but he was beset by knee injuries in 2000 and 2001, forcing him to miss 15 of 32 games.

A 1997 fourth-round draft pick out of South Carolina, Robinson has 187 catches for 2,695 yards in 51 games with the Bears.
