Season 5 – League Match #12

Croats in Miami vs. Screamin’ Seamen

Date:
February 1st, 2004
Venue: San Siro (Miami, FL)
Attendance: 59,648 (60,000)
Weather: Partly Cloudy

We’re in beautiful South Florida this weekend to take on our biggest of rivals, the Croats in Miami. If you’re a follower of the Screamin’ Seamen then you’re probably well aware of just how much of a rivalry exists between these two clubs. The Croats are the team that cost us the division title in our first season at the Division IV level, and every match since then has been a grudge match.

The good news for us today is that everything seems to be going our way. We’ve won two consecutive league matches, and the overall form of the club is through the roof at the moment. We’ve actually laid claim to third place in the series, and look to solidify that position this afternoon.

Previous Meetings

(W) 12/15/2002 – Screamin’ Seamen 5, Croats in Miami 1
(L) 3/16/2003 – Croats in Miami 1, Screamin’ Seamen 0
(D) 4/20/2003 – Croats in Miami 2, Screamin’ Seamen 2
(L) 6/22/2003 – Screamin’ Seamen 1, Croats in Miami 2
(W) 8/3/2003 – Screamin’ Seamen 2, Croats in Miami 1
(L) 10/19/2003 – Croats in Miami 3, Screamin’ Seamen 2
(D) 11/30/2003 – Screamin’ Seamen 2, Croats in Miami 2

As you can tell we’ve got a pretty tight record against the Croats, with every single match except for the first one decided by one goal or ending in a draw. We’ve always played the Croats tight, and we expect today to be no different.

We’re going with our standard lineup today. The team has been playing well enough lately that we do not feel any tricks are necessary to get a win against the Croats. We will, however, be concentrating our attack more on the wings, where the Miami defense appears to be a little weaker.

Match Report

PRE-GAME

59648 spectators arrived at San Siro, where weather conditions were pretty good for football.

Croats tactics involved an interesting 3-4-3 combination. Lineup: Tze-Kei - Patrick, Herrmann, Britt - Moldoveanu, Larsson, Peterek, Andry - Howe, Larsson, Clay.

Screamin' started off with a 3-5-2 lineup. The following players had been chosen: Jernigan - Willard, Mcdonald, Lucas - Nichols, Dufek, Behling, Tejeda, Bösch - Metman, Galvez.

FIRST HALF

It was an obvious ambition of Screamin' to attack on the flanks.

Screamin' took the lead in the games 11th minute with 0 - 1 after some elegant plays down the middle. Germán Galvez was the scorer.

Some fine manouvering on the left lead to an 24:th minute Screamin' goal, making it 0 - 2. Germán Galvez was noted down as the scorer.

In the games 29:th minute Screamin'´s Cameron “Big Mac” Mcdonald fell dramatically just outside the penalty area. However, the referee booked Cameron “Big Mac” Mcdonald for taking a dive.

One of many good passes from Reg Nichols at the wing was recieved and skillfully taken care of by Germán Galvez, scoring for Screamin' to 0 - 3. By then Germán Galvez was a three time scorer - a hat trick!

Marc Andry almost put the reducer away having drawn the entire left side defence away, but the shot went straight into the arms of the goalkeeper.

After several obvious shirt pulling incidents, Croats´s Anders Larsson got himself booked.

The referee showed Croatss Marc Andry the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge.

The teams went for a half-time break at 0 - 3. Croats, bringing the final ball possession rate to 57 percent, dominated the battle.

SECOND HALF

The game had been on for 48 minutes when Tyler Willard broke through to the right, upping the score to the home crowd´s dismay. Screamin'´s were up 0 - 4. The structure of the game started to change as Screamin' decided to pull back and meet their opponents in the defensive zone.

A misunderstanding between the visitors keeper Cornelius Jernigan and his left defence could have resulted in a goal for Croats, but Anders Larsson´s finish was way to lame.

In the 68:th minute Screamin's Javier Tejeda received a yellow card for going into a challenge studs first. The Croats player was Venceslav Peterek who had to be helped off the pitch, unable to finish the game, but Oleg Komaric came in to finish the match.

The fortyfive minutes were dominated by Croats, with an impressive 59 percent possession of the ball.

POST-GAME

Croats´s best player was Oleg Komaric. Anders Larsson on the other hand, had a terrible day.

The most dominating Screamin' player was without a doubt Tyler Willard. Germán Galvez on the other hand, had a terrible day.

Final Score: Screamin’ Seamen 4, Croats in Miami 0

Comments

Well, today wasn’t the sort of day that we were expecting. It was obvious as soon as the Croats took to the pitch that they had no intention of trying to win the match, playing nearly all of their players out of position. It was a victory, and an easy one, but the lineup that the Croats chose made it a bit of a hollow one.

Their reasons for doing what they did are evident. Mathematically eliminated from the series title race, they’ve decided to tank the remainder of the season in order to finish fifth or sixth, thereby getting another match by virtue of a relegation game. This is the sort of thing that I do not agree with. If I were a Croats fan, I would be upset…fans don’t pay to see their team lose on purpose. If something unfortunate were to happen in said relegation match, I will do nothing but laugh as the Croats relegate to Division V.

Still, it was a good day and we’ll definitely take the three points. Special congratulations need to go out to Argentinean striker German Galvez. Though German has been struggling a bit lately, he earned the first hattrick of his career today.

Series Scores and Standings

-Ramblers, though they’re struggling lately, had an easy time with the Harrisburg Harries, winning 5-nil.
-Neon Genesis Evangelion stayed in contention, defeating Sweden Heights 3-1.
-WoM FC put up a fight, but lost to Big Reds, 2-nil.

Week 13 Matchups

Screamin’ Seamen vs. WoM FC
Big Reds vs. Neon Genesis Evangelion
Harrisburg Harries vs. Croats in Miami
Ramblers vs. Sweden Heights

Big Reds vs. Neon Genesis Evangelion is obviously the marquee matchup next week, with the series title on the line. Our own match against WoM FC should be interesting as well, as a draw will allow us to lock up a second consecutive third place finish.

Up Next: We have a friendly match against Belgian 4th-Division club DTNW Cercle. Stay tuned!
