Screamin’ Seamen vs. Gazzaly FC

Date:
December 29, 2002
Venue: The Docks (Chicago, IL)
Attendance: 13,739 (17,350)
Weather: Overcast

Team morale was a little low after our first ever loss in a competitive match, but Gazzaly FC looked to be exactly what we needed to recover. A newly formed team that had the misfortune of being placed in Division Four, the visitors looked to be outmatched in every category. We didn’t expect much trouble with this one.

Formation: 3-5-2

Keeper: #1 Darryl Read

Right Wingback: #3 Ben McMahon
Central Defender: #2 Chuck Scales
Left Wingback: #5 Arlen Lucas

Right Winger: #10 Olav Mauffret
Inner Midfielder: #6 Charlie Bautista
Inner Midfielder: #7 Lucian Tere
Inner Midfielder: #4 Pete “The Old Goat” Tomlin
Left Winger: #25 Paul Peralta

Substitutes
-Keeper: #13 Fredric McKinley

We only made one change to our normal starting lineup, and that was Paul Peralta again playing in place of Max Dodge, who has yet to regain the good form with which he played in our first season.

Match Report

Forrest Tobias gave his Screamin' the lead with 1 - 0, as he successfully challenged both the guests central defenders, then placed the ball unreachably at the goaltenders right post. In the 6:th minute of the match the visitors central line of defence had to look on as Olav Mauffret dashed through, knocking home 2 - 0 for Screamin'. Lucian Tere of Screamin' received a yellow card in the 9:th minute for unsportsmanlike behaviour. A bit later, a magnificent combination in the middle resulted in Screamin'´s Forrest Tobias putting the lead up to 3 - 0. Things were going to get worse for the visitors. Johannes Henriksson squirmed himself through the central defense line in the 14:th minute, asserting the lead to 4 - 0. 4 - 0 was the half-time score. Screamin' held the ball, with a clear 75 percent possession rate.

Screamin' put themselves up 5 - 0 when Johannes Henriksson broke through on the right, leaving the entire defensive box behind him. After this Screamin' lowered the tempo in order to concentrate on their defensive efforts. After 71 minutes Paul Peralta put Screamin' ahead 6 - 0 as he rose to head in a hooked ball, the result of an effort from the right side. Screamin' held the ball, with a clear 86 percent possession rate.

Comments

This was about the kind of result we expected from this match, and exactly what the team needed. We jumped out to a huge 4-nil lead in the first 14 minutes, and then were able to put it into cruise control. I am most impressed with the fact that Gazzaly FC never even had a good scoring opportunity against us. A completely dominating performance, without doubt.

Up Next: Our first friendly match of the season, as we host the newly-formed Galesburg Avengers and their manager, Coffee Warlord. Stay tuned!
