Head Coach Donovan Moore's contract was up, and he was asking for over $3 million a year to re-sign. The Chargers made it clear that there was no way they could possibly pay for his services any longer, and began to search for another candidate.
Thirty-nine year old Jermaine Lane was hired for a more reasonable $1.5 million. Lane was a decent coach who had success as the head coach at Sacramento State. Most Chargers fans were uninspired by the move.
Franklin decided to leave ticket prices alone - there was no way he could pitch a stadium deal AND jack up the cost of admission in the same offseason and have any hope of attracting a crowd. The proposed new stadium would have a total seating capacity of 80,000, with 15,000 club seats and 300 luxury boxes, at a total cost of $261 million. It was placed before the city council, and put on the ballot. The vote would take place shortly after the draft.
