The way I've understood it, the fuck up here was that the VAR thought he was supposed to confirm it was not offside, while the call on the field was actually (wrongfully) offside and VAR's job was there to overturn it. It was so obviously not offside, it took just seconds to judge the situation and call: "check is over".
