It was similar to what happened every other weekend in the Premier League prior to VAR was - and why it was - introduced.
The way I've understood it, the fuck up here was that the VAR thought he was supposed to confirm it was not offside, while the call on the field was actually (wrongfully) offside and VAR's job was there to overturn it. It was so obviously not offside, it took just seconds to judge the situation and call: "check is over". As soon as the referee on the field blew his whistle for the free kick, VAR was no longer allowed to interfere and correct calling "yes" where "no" was in place.
