I'm not there yet, but I had a co-worker who handled it by doing the things he was into at a deeper level. Like he is very into jazz/blues. So he found the local college radio station that did a lot of jazz/blues and basically said "hey, you guys need anything, I've got time to volunteer." And he used that in to become part of the local jazz/blues scene.
