Dan Driessen had 3 base hits as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Atlanta
Braves 2 to 1 at FULTON CTY STADIUM.
San Francisco won the game with a run in the top of the 9th inning. After an
out was recorded, Alex Trevino stroked a one-base hit. Jeff Dedmon then had
one get away for a wild pitch. Driessen then banged out a single scoring the
run. Overall San Francisco out-hit Atlanta 8 to 5.
Scott Garrelts(5-1) allowed no runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory.
Dedmon(1-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 2 hits
in 1 inning.

Dave Concepcion had 2 base hits at RIVERFRONT STADIUM as the Cincinnati Reds
beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by the count of 4 to 1.
Cincinnati jumped on top of Los Angeles in the bottom of the 2nd inning
scoring a single run utilizing 2 base hits. Cincinnati managed 9 in their
victory.
The winning pitcher was John Stuper(2-4) who allowed 1 run in 8 and 1/3
innings. Stuper got help from Ted Power who earned his 10th save. Bob
Welch(3-2) was the losing pitcher.

Mario Ramirez cracked a homer and had 2 RBI as the San Diego Padres defeated
the Houston Astros by a score of 3 to 1 at The Astrodome.
San Diego brought 2 runs across the plate in the top of the 4th inning with
the help of 4 hits. Steve Garvey led off the inning for San Diego when he
laced a single. Carmelo Martinez stepped up next and he smacked a single.
Kevin McReynolds struck out, unable to help the rally. Garry Templeton dug
into the batters box next, but he struck out. Terry Kennedy stepped into the
box and delivered a base-hit scoring a run. Ramirez added to the rally and
laced a single scoring the final run of the inning. San Diego had a total of
10 hits for the game.
The win went to Andy Hawkins(5-6) who allowed 1 run in 7 and 1/3 innings.
Goose Gossage earned his 15th save. Ron Mathis(2-2) absorbed the loss. He
surrendered 9 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.
'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Hawkins, 'I was
just giving us a chance to win.'

Bryn Smith had a strong outing at OLYMPIC STADIUM where the Montreal Expos
beat the Chicago Cubs by the score of 6 to 0.
Montreal drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning
when they scored 3 runs on 3 hits. The early run support proved sufficient
for Smith(6-4) and Montreal. That was all the run support Smith required.
Montreal had 9 hits for the afternoon.
Dick Ruthven(0-5) was charged with the loss. He pitched 4 innings giving up 4
hits and 5 walks.

Jerry Koosman went 9 strong innings and Mike Schmidt had 2 base hits as the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets by a score of 1 to
0.
Philadelphia scored the only run of the game in the 6th inning. New York
threatened in the 9th but Philadelphia was able to put down the rally.
Koosman(4-2) went the distance for the shutout. Tom Gorman(2-3) was hit with
the loss. He pitched 5 and 1/3 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 walks.
'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said Koosman. 'I had
good command early in the game. I had my control and composure and everything
went well.'

Rick Reuschel pitched a 2 hit shutout at THREE RIVERS STADIUM as the
Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3 to 0.
Reuschel(6-4) was simply too much for the St. Louis batters. He was stingy on
the mound, allowing just 2 hits and no walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop
from 2.40 to 2.14. Pittsburgh had only 5 hits for the game.
The loss was charged to Kurt Kepshire(4-3). The Pittsburgh ballclub's record
now stands at 20-35. With this loss, St. Louis has a 4-6 record of late,
29-28 overall.
