He's hoping straight to school, though the offers & conditions he eventually gets will factor in to figuring that out. It's pretty common for law schools to want incoming students to take a year, but it's not absolute.
If one of his top choices said "take a year and then come" I figure he'd take a year. If his second tier of choices had one saying "take a year" and another saying "come on", then I think he'd probably go to the one that said come now.
