I haven't read anything about throat-to-waist tearing, but I did read an article about pets eating their dead owners. Article said it happened, but it wasn't super common. It also said dogs were slightly more likely to eat their owners than cats, the article put that down to a cat having more chance of catching alternative food within a house.

It also said it was normally when the pets got desperate, although there was one outlier. A German shepherd that ate the face off his owner within 20 minutes of death, and while there was still food in his doggie bowl.
