Holy crap- wow tires have a huge variation. I mean, I got a complete set of Michelin Hydroedges on my 2005 Corolla a couple of years ago for about $400. And those are 90K pretty much top-of-the-line tires (at the time, I was going to be driving for 40K+ per year in bad midwestern weather) and that's for 4 of them.

At the time, I could have gotten crappy ones for like $60 apiece, so I could get 4 tires for a comparable set of 2 (as it doesn't sound like you guys are talking about top of the line tires) on a similarly sized car that you guys are talking about.
