To me, there's a difference between using computers to facilitate the trading process, and using complex algorithms in those computer systems that essentially decide whether or not to trade on the behalf of their owners.
The former rightly makes the market more fluid and streamlined, the latter has been shown to be prone to cause cascading problems.
