Arnaud's in the french quarter was a really great restaurant for the "break the bank" one. Mind you I went in 2003 so it might be different now.
I would definitely second the recomendations for the Acme Oyster House, I had a Po'boy and it was absolutely fantastic, my wife had the jambalaya and it was just as good.
Cafe Du Monde is a must ... the coffee is good but it's all about the beignets, it was windy outside when we ate ours, we were wearing black clothes and were completely covered in powdered sugar. Some guy was just watching us as we were eating them and laughing. I didn't care, it was that good.
I want to go back just for the beignets. And I live in Toronto.
