It's about the creature that's can withstand the most situations that it gets through. It's not, say, the tallest giraffes that can reach the tallest leaves because how often do you run across a tree that only the tallest giraffe can reach but the second tallest can't and thus dies? It's the one that is tall enough to eat from most trees, can withstand, say, a flash flood, is not necessarily the fastest but is faster than the slowest giraffe so it doesn't get eaten by predators, etc)
