Your goal is to build up a large army. Your methods for doing this are beating up on bands of brigands, asking lords, ladies, and leaders of villages if they have tasks to complete, buying/selling goods to raise money, and eventually getting in good with a king (by doing tasks for him) and he'll give you a fief to run. When you get a strong enough army you can start taking over castles yourself.
