Headcase

Nicknames are a common occurrence among professional athletes, and the players for SSFC are no exception. There are currently a number of colorful monikers attached to players on the team, like Pete “The Old Goat” Tomlin, Cornelius “Corny” Jernigan, and Forrest “Gump” Tobias. But one player who has been mysteriously lacking a nickname is the club’s star wingback, Arlen Lucas. That is, until now.

Mark Giangreco, a Chicago-area TV sportscaster, recently showed a small segment on his program which highlighted soccer players from the area. The segment was done to the song “Headstrong,” by Trapped, and mostly featured some of the bigger-name talent from the Chicago area, such as Stephen Cullen (striker for Streamwood United FC), Andre Bengtsson (midfielder for CrazyCoCo), and Noble Dejesus (defender for Green Man). However, one small section did show Lucas heading in a goal against SoccerWussies earlier this season.

Lucas’ teammates jumped at the opportunity, and began to call the tall wingback Arlen “Headstrong” Lucas. However, it was not long before the nickname had evolved (or some would say devolved) to “Headcase” Lucas, a reference to Arlen’s penchant for losing his temper with opposing players and referees alike. Indeed, “Headcase” Lucas is the most highly-penalized member of the club. But at least he has a cool nickname now.

Stay of Execution?

Rumors have been flying for many weeks now, regarding head coach Ken Brown and his future with the Screamin’ Seamen Football Club. The club has had what can only be described as a disappointing season, and will need to fight hard this Sunday if they are to avoid the possibility of relegation back to Division Five. Throughout all of the turmoil, one thing has remained constant; rumors that Coach Brown would be fired any week now.

With the season rapidly drawing to a close, and the Seamen in a dangerous 6th position in the standings, many thought that Brown’s time was drawing near. After the club lost this past weekend, a 2-nil defeat at the hands of the Big Reds, most were certain that the axe would fall on Brown come Monday morning. However, the front office has remained very quiet. It is now Wednesday, and Coach Brown is still with the club.

Silence from the team’s management has only served to fuel the fires of the rumor mill, and team owner Data King has also remained mute on the subject. Fans can only wonder exactly what is going on with their beloved Seamen, and what the future holds.
