See, I don't necessarily see it as disdain. Many, many thoughts can be conveyed through a well placed non statement.
When a lynch mob for example ( to keep it on topic
) has you roped up and on the horse and they say "you have any words in your defense" the anwer "why bother" sounds much more like resignation than disdain. This is just one example.
