Season 3 – FOFC Cup III – Group Play – Round 4

North Plainfield Plague vs. Screamin’ Seamen

Date:
June 4th, 2003
Venue: The Infestadium (North Plainfield, NJ)
Attendance: 902 (20,000)
Weather: Partly cloudy

It seems as though we’ve been living out of our suitcases lately, and today is no exception. We’re in New Jersey today for an FOFC Cup match against cthomer5000’s North Plainfield Plague. The Plague have done pretty well for themselves thus far, earning six of a possible nine points and currently standing in third place in the Group F standings. The team was rolling until their 2-nil defeat at the hands of the Manhattan Marauders last week, and will certainly be looking to get back on track today.

Though their offense has been a little lacking in group play thus far (who are we to judge?), the Plague appear to have a relatively balanced team. We expect to see them run a 3-5-2 formation against us today. Combined with the fact that we are on the road, where we have certainly struggled in league play, this could spell a certain amount of difficulty for the Seamen.

But our players know exactly what is at stake in today’s match, and the formula is quite simple. If we are victorious today, we will have clinched first place within Group F, and will receive one of the top 14 seeds in the upcoming single-elimination tournament. Needless to say, this makes today’s match important, as we do not want to have to wait until next week’s match with the Manhattan Marauders for an opportunity to lock things up.

Formation: 5-4-1

Starters

Keeper: #13 Darryl Read

Right Wingback: #24 Christian Kvam
Central Defender: #21 Zarpas Lerma
Central Defender: #18 Cameron McDonald
Central Defender: #20 Keith Stubbs
Left Wingback: #17 Mattias Leier

Right Winger: #10 Olav Mauffret
Inner Midfielder: #19 Jerry Smith
Inner Midfielder: #7 Lucian Tere
Left Winger: #25 Paul Peralta

Forward: #11 Johannes Henriksson

Team Captain: #11 Johannes Henriksson
Set Pieces: #11 Johannes Henriksson

Substitutes
-Keeper: #1 Cornelius “Corny” Jernigan
-Defender: #22 Tyler Willard
-Midfielder: #6 Charlie Bautista
-Forward: #15 Forrest “Gump” Tobias
-Winger: #3 Ben McMahon

With the obvious exception of struggling striker Johannes Henriksson, we’ll be keeping a close eye on defenders Zarpas Lerma and Cameron McDonald today. Both of these young men have been struggling as of late, but look as though they may have turned the corner. Both have made good progress in practice this week, and will hopefully continue to improve in the weeks to come.

Wingback Mattias Leier, winger Paul Peralta, and midfielder Jerry Smith have all been performing well as of late (solid form), and we are expecting to see good things from them today as well.

Comments

Winger Olav Mauffret is certainly the man of the hour for the Screamin’ Seamen! The Plague played a hard-fought match, and it looked as though the match would end in a draw, denying us a guaranteed 1st place finish in Group F. But with only a couple of minutes remaining, Olav Mauffret struck the ball true, sending it into the twine and silencing the 900 or so fans who had turned out to the Infestadium.

As far as the players we were keeping a close eye on go, Zarpas Lerma did little to impress. Cameron McDonald, on the other hand, played a fine game and scored his first ever goal. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come from the tall defender.

FOFC Cup Group F Scores and Standings

-Alf Trickers stayed hot on our heels, defeating the Fantastic Flying Froggies, 2-nil.
-The Manhattan Marauders had a dominant performance at home, drubbing the Shadow Dragons, 4-nil.

Today’s victory over the Plague locked down our first-place finish in Group F, as we hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Alf Trickers. The only other change in the standings occurred to NAIWF’s Manhattan Marauders, who moved into third place by virtue of their victory over the Shadow Dragons.

Group F Round 5 Matchups

Screamin’ Seamen vs. Manhattan Marauders
North Plainfield Plague vs. Alf Trickers
Shadow Dragons vs. Fantastic Flying Froggies

Our match against the Marauders next week may seem like a meaningless game, but that is not the case. We’ll still be playing to win, as we want to receive the highest seeding possible going into the single elimination portion of the tournament. We want to get as much home field advantage as we can muster. Sorry NAIWF.

Up Next: Training results will be posted Thursday evening or Friday. Stay tuned!
