In the AL East, three teams are tied for first place with 13-12 records. The Cleveland Naps, Montreal Capitals and Washington Senators are those teams. The A’s are just 1 back whoile the Red Sox are 3 back. In the West, Atlanta and Detroit are tied for first at 15-10. They lead the Waves by 3 games. Vegas and San Francisco are both 4 out.

In the NL East, The Phillies and Pirates are tied for first at 16-9. They lead both the New York Giants and Syracuse Warriors by 4 games. Brooklyn is 8 back early on. In the Midwest, Cincinnati leads both the Dallas Braves and St. Louis Cardinals by 2 games. The Cubs are just 3 out while the Astros are just 4-21 to start the season and 12 games back.

May

In the AL East, the Montreal Capitals have grabbed first place with a 31-23 record. They lead Cleveland by 2 games and both the A’s and Senators by 3. Boston is 9 back in last place. In the West, Detroit finishes the month winning 6 straight and lead the Atlanta Black Birds by 3 games. Vegas is 5 back.

In the NL East, The Phillies and Pirates remain tied for first place at 34-20. Syracuse is just 1 game back. New York is 8 out. In the Midwest, the St. Louis Cardinals have moved into first at 30-24. The Reds are just 1 game back. Dallas is 4 games back.

June

In the AL East, the Montreal Capitals remain in first place with a 45-36 record. The lead the A’s by three games and the Red Sox by 5. Washington is 6 games back while Cleveland is 7 back. In the West, Atlanta moves into first place at 46-35. Detroit is just 2 games back while Vegas is 4 out. The Waves are in last and it looks certain they will be playing in a new city next year.

In the NL East, Syracuse has gone on a tear and passed the Phillies and Pirates to claim a 6 game lead over both teams. In the Midwest, Cincinnati moves back in front by 3 games over the Cardinals. Dallas is just 4 back while Chicago is 8 back.

In the All-Star game, the AL beat the NL 9-8. Johnny Mize was 2 for 5 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI on his way to being named MVP.

July

In the AL East, the Boston Red Sox have moved in front of the Montreal Capitals by 1 game. The A’s are in the thick of things, just 4 games back. In the West, Atlanta moves out to a 6 game lead over the Detroit Tigers. The Las Vegas Aces are 7 back.

In the NL East, Syracuse continues to lead the division, they have a healthy 7 game lead over the Phillies and 12 games over the New York Giants. In the Midwest, the Reds leads the Cards by 2 games. The Dallas Braves are 6 back while the Cubs are 8 back.

August

In the AL East, the Red Sox remain in first place, by just 3 games over the Capitals with a month left to play. In the West, Atlanta is running away with the division, they are 13 games ahead of the Las Vegas Aces.

In the NL East, it is still Syracuse in first at 82-52. They lead the Phillies by 6 games. New York is 11 back. In the Midwest, the Cardinals move 1 game in front of the Cincinnati Reds. Dallas is 9 back.

September 15, 1949

The Atlanta Black Birds have clinched the AL West Division. In the Eas,t the Red Sox are now 7 games up on Montreal.

In the NL East, Syracuse lead the division by 7 games. In the Midwest, St. Louis has pulled out to a 3 game lead over the Reds.

September 22, 1949

The Boston Red Sox have clinched the AL East.

In the NL East, the Syracuse Warriors are 7 games up and have a magic number of 1. In the Midwest, St. Louis’ lead has been cut to 1 game by the Reds.

September 23, 1949

The Syracuse Warriors have clinched the NL East. In the Midwest, the Reds and Cards are tied for first with 6 games to play.

September 26, 1949

The Cleveland Nap’ Johnny Gorsica threw a No-Hitter against Las Vegas in a 6-0 victory. Gorsica struck out 5 and walked just 1 on the day.

The Cincinnati Reds have moved 1 game in front of St. Louis with 3 games to play.


September 30, 1949

On the last day of the regular season, the Reds lead the Cardinals by 1 game.

The Cardinals host the Pirates and the Reds visit the Phillies.

In the early game, the Pirates beat the Cards in St. Louis, 3-2, and that makes the Reds game meaningless. They win anyway and clinch the NL Midwest on the final day of the regular season.

ALCS

The ALCS opens in Atlanta, but the Boston Red Sox take game 1 on the road by a 5-1 final score. Atlanta comes back in game 2 with a 5-3 victory to tie the Series up at 1 as it heads to Boston.

In game 3, the Black Birds double up Boston, 6-3 to go up 2-1 in the Series. In game 4, Boston comes back with a 4-0 shutout, allowing just 5 hits for the Birds. That ties the Series up at 2 games each.

In game 5, Boston trailed by 4 heading into the bottom of the ninth. They come out of it with 5 runs and a huge 12-11 win. The Red Sox now lead 3-2 in the Series as it heads back to Atlanta for the final two games.

Boston wins game 6, 6-4 and they win the ALCS, 4-2 and will play in the World Series..





NLCS

Syracuse hosts the first 2 games of the NLCS, but in game one, the Cincinnati Reds crush the Warriors, 12-2. Syracuse comes back in game 2 with a 5-2 victory and this Series is tied at one as it now shifts to Cincinnati for 3 games.

Syracuse wins game 3 on the road, 8-5 to take a 2-1 Series lead. In game 4, the Reds score twice in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. The Syracuse Warriors get a run in the 11th inning and hold on for the 9-8 win, and now have a 3-1 Series lead.

Cincinnati wins game 5, 4-1 to send this Series back to Syracuse, with the Warriors up 3-2.

Syracuse cannot wrap up this series at home in game 6, as the Reds take it 6-2. We will have a decisive game 7 in the NLCS.

In game 7, Syracuse puts up 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Reds get 1 back in the 2nd and 2 more back in the third to make it 4-3 after 3 innings.

Syracuse comes back with 3 more runs in the fourth inning to go up 7-3.

Syracuse puts the Series away with 4 more runs in the 7th and a 11-3 lead.

The Final score is 13-3 and Syracuse moves on to the World Series!




World Series

The World Series opens in Boston, but in game 1, the Syracuse Warriors score twice in the first inning and hold the lead throughout in the 4-2 victory. In game 2, Syracuse trailed 6-0 only to come back and win this one 9-6. The Warriors take a 2-0 lead in the World Series as it shifts to Syracuse for the next 3 games.

Boston gets back in the Series with a 7-4 victory in game 3. They now trial only 2 games to 1.

In game 4, the Red Sox shut out the Warriors, 2-0 on just 6 hits. The Series is now tied at 2 and neither team has been able to win a home game yet.

In game 5, Syracuse finally gets a win at home in this series, 4-2. They now lead 3-2 as we go back to Boston for the final 2 games.

In game 6, the Red Sox led 5-2 heading into the ninth inning. Syracuse put up 5 runs in the top of the ninth to go up 7-5, only to see the Red Sox put up 3 in the bottom half of the ninth to take game 6, 8-7. This sets up a final game 7 for all the marbles.

In game 7, Syracuse draws first blood with 2 runs in the top of the fourth inning. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have yet to register a single hit.

In the fifth, the Warriors go up 3-0, but the Sox finally get a couple hits in the game.

The Warriors put up 2 more runs in the 8thand 1 in the ninth to go up 6-0 heading into the bottom of the 9th inning.

The Red Sox manage just 1 hit in the ninth, and the Warriors win this game 6-0 ,allowing only 4 Boston hits. The Syracuse are the 1949 World Series Champions for the first time ever!

Champion Review

The Syracuse pitching staff was solid, but not spectacular. Milo Candini went 22-11 with a 3.91 ERA. Bob Carpenter won 19 games and had a 3.56 ERA.

CF Andy Pafko led the Syracuse team with a .336 batting average. He was also tied for the lead with 27 homeruns. He led the team with 99 RBI. 2B Bill Nagel batted .304 with 14 homeruns. C Joe Garagiola batted .303 with 11 homeruns. LF Johnny Rizzo batted .288 with 23 homeruns and 76 RBI. 1B Earl Torgeson batted .250 with a tie for team high in homeruns with 27. He also had 92 RBI.

Ty Cobb Award

AL: RF Stan Musial, PHA, (566 AB, .322 AVG, 37 HR, 127 RBI, 99 R, 182 Hits, 1.017 OPS) - This is Stan’s second consecutive Ty Cobb Award.
NL: C Roy Campanella, DAL, (529 AB, .293 AVG, 47 HR, 124 RBI, 96 R, 155 Hits, 1.001 OPS)

League Outlook

The Los Angeles Waves have been sold and moved to Seattle Washington. They have been renamed to the Seattle Pilots.

Free Agency, of Note

There really are not that many impact players in Free Agency this year. Teams will only improve for the most part this off season through the draft and their farm system.

Cleveland signs long time Montreal Capital SP Sid Hudson (7-8-6) to a 3 year deal.

Montreal signs SP Ike Pearson (7-8-6) for 4 years to make up for the loss of Hudson.

The Washington Senators sign long time Phillies SP Al Epperly (7-8-7) to a 4 year deal.

37 year old and 12 time All-Star 1B Johnny Mize(7-7-8) played his entire career in Montreal, but now signs a contract with Detroit to finish out his career.

The Cardinals sign SP Ken Trinkle (8-8-6) to a 4 year contract.

Dallas signs SP Red Barrett (8-8-6) for 4 years.
