Screamin’ Seamen vs. Neon Genesis Evangelion

Date:
May 11th, 2003
Venue: The Docks (Chicago, IL)
Attendance: 21,602 (30,000)
Weather: Rain

Today marks the first day in what will be the easiest four-week stretch of the season for SSFC. We play host to Neon Genesis Evangelion, a club that is struggling at the moment. NGE finished in fourth place last season, but has not been able to compete with the new additions to the series, and are currently staring at automatic relegation if they do not improve their standing.

The weather could very well play a big factor today. It is downright nasty in Chicago today, with periodic rain and ferocious win gusts as high as forty miles-per-hour. If you’ve followed this dynasty report, then you know the Screamin’ Seamen aren’t a very good wet-weather team, despite what the team name might suggest. We’re just hoping that the Neon Genesis Evangelion players have as much trouble as we do finding our footing on a wet, wind-blasted pitch.

Our clubs have met twice in the past, and we have owned NGE thus far, taking all six possible points.

Previous Meetings
12/22/2002 – Neon Genesis Evangelion 2, Screamin’ Seamen 3
3/9/2003 – Screamin’ Seamen 3, Neon Genesis Evangelion 1

The match back in December of last year was a memorable one. In a back-and-forth match, the unlikely hero for SSFC was central defender Chuck Scales. His strike in the 76th minute gave the Seamen a hard-fought 3-2 victory on the road. Let’s hope that Chuck has another admirable performance in him today, as we desperately need three points.

Formation: 3-5-2

Starters

Keeper: #1 Cornelius “Corny” Jernigan

Right Wingback: #22 Tyler Willard
Central Defender: #2 Chuck Scales
Left Wingback: #5 Arlen Lucas

Right Winger: #9 Valentin Rubio
Inner Midfielder: #8 Niklas Ivarsson
Inner Midfielder: #4 Pete “The Old Goat” Tomlin
Inner Midfielder: #6 Charlie Bautista
Left Winger: #3 Ben McMahon

Forward: #15 Forrest “Gump” Tobias
Forward: #11 Johannes Henriksson

Team Captain: #11 Johannes Henriksson
Set Pieces: #3 Ben McMahon

Substitutes
-Keeper: #13 Darryl Read
-Defender: #17 Mattias Leier
-Midfielder: #7 Lucian Tere
-Forward: #14 Jesper Gravesen
-Winger: #10 Olav Mauffret

We’re going with our standard lineup today, with only one minor change. Due to the severe slump that team captain Johannes Henriksson is in, Ben McMahon will be taking the corner and free kicks. He isn’t as skilled as Johannes when it comes to this sort of thing, but is the best alternative we have.

Match Report

PRE-GAME

21602 spectators had found their way to The Docks, despite the heavy rain.

Screamin' tactics involved an interesting 3-5-2 combination. The following players had been chosen: Jernigan - Willard, Scales, Lucas - Rubio, Ivarsson, Bautista, Tomlin, Mcmahon - Henriksson, Tobias.

EVA started off with a 3-5-2 lineup. Lineup: Åkesson - Calloway, Waldrop, Vick - Ayres, Andersson, Ødegård, Taylor, Villiard - Lachance, Alfaro.

FIRST HALF

After 3 minutes EVA put themselves up by 0 - 1 as Douglas Alfaro finished off a strike from the left with a real cannon placed at the far post.

Stanley Lachance was, after 14 minutes, almost able to extend the visitors lead with a well placed diving header but home side keeper Cornelius Jernigan saved.

The referee showed Screamin's Chuck Scales the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge.

After 30 minutes Screamin'´s Chuck Scales contracted a slight foot injury, but could finish the game.

The teams went for a half-time break at 0 - 1. Screamin', bringing the final ball possession rate to 54 percent, dominated the battle.

SECOND HALF

Johannes Henriksson pulled a real crowd pleaser as he, in the 60:th minute, wove through the guests whole central defense line and put the 1 - 1 equaliser away.

Screamin' broke through to the left in the 68:th minute, Charlie Bautista firing at an acute angle giving the home side a 2 - 1 lead.

71 minutes into the game EVA´s Stanley Lachance found a gap in the home sides central defense scoring with a long shot, making it 2 - 2.

Screamin''s Johannes Henriksson scored 3 - 2 by shooting accurately and hard from a long distance, leaving the opponent goalie no other option than to pick up the ball from the net.

A speedy charge from the left side of the field put Screamin' lead up with 4 - 2. Forrest Tobias finished that one off competently, firing from an acute angle.

The referee showed EVAs Ed Vick the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. The player down was Arlen Lucas. The Screamin' bench looked worried a while but in the end he managed to get up.

Screamin' held the ball, with a clear 60 percent possession rate.

POST-GAME

The most dominating Screamin' player was without a doubt Arlen Lucas. Johannes Henriksson was a disappointment, however.

The most dominating EVA player was without a doubt Geir Ødegård. However, Théo Villiard made a disastrous appearance.

Comments

I have to say that I am pleased with the results from this one. We were a little concerned being down by a goal at the end of the first half, but credit is due to “Corny” Jernigan for keeping things from getting out of hand early. As the second half started, team captain Johannes Henriksson was able to dig deep, despite his slump, and managed two of the team’s four goals, including the one that proved to be the game winner.

Forrest “Gump” Tobias and midfielder Charlie Bautista added goals of their own, and we tallied more than two goals for the first time this season. Things were a little rough on the pitch as well, with both Chuck Scales and Arlen Lucas getting dinged up in the match. Neither were serious injuries, but we’ve made arrangements for a doctor to come in and treat both of them, just to be on the safe side.

Week 7 Matchups

Syracuse Supers vs. Screamin’ Seamen
Sweden Heights vs. Ramblers
SoccerWussies vs. Croats in Miami
Neon Genesis Evangelion vs. Big Reds

We get our two matches against the only safely PICable team in the series, Syracuse Supers, over the next two weeks. While that is happening, Ramblers and Sweden Heights will be beating each other up, and hopefully either splitting the series or playing to a couple of draws. Either way, we should be in either 4th or a close 5th place by the end of week eight. And more importantly, we should be the ones with the team spirit advantage down the stretch. The Syracuse Supers will be chasing us through the fixture order this time around, which should play to our advantage.

Up Next: It’s the most wonderful time of the year…FOFC Cup Time! We kick off group play in FOFC Cup III action this Wednesday as we play host to Alf Trickers. Stay tuned!
