April

In the AL East, the Philadelphia A’s once again start off strong, with a 18-9 record. They are 3 games up on the Naps and 4 up on Montreal. In the West, Detroit begins with the best record in baseball at 20-7. They are 5 up on San Francisco and 6 up on Atlanta. The defending champion Waves are in last place, 11 back at 9-18. Talk about a slow start.

In the NL East, Pittsburgh leads the division with a18-9, 2 games better than the Phillies and 3 up on the Giants. In the Midwest, Chicago and Dallas are tied for first, 4 games better than the Reds and 5 on the Cardinals.

May

The A’s continue to lead the AL East with a 34-19 record. They are 5 games up on the Naps and 6 up on Montreal. The rest of the division is at least 10 games back. In the West, Detroit holds a 2 game lead over the San Francisco Westerners. LA continues to struggle 10 games back.

In the NL East, Pittsburgh still leads with a 33-20 record. The Giants are just 3 back while the Phillies are 4 back. In the Midwest, Chicago has moved 2 games in front of Dallas, while Cincinnati sits 4 back.

On May 26, The Athletic’s Lefty Thomas pitched a no hitter in a 4-0 victory over the Las Vegas Aces. He struck out 11 and walked 1 on the day.

June

Philadelphia still leads the AL East at the All-Star break, but their lead has been cut down to one game by the Cleveland Naps. Montreal sits 7 back. In the West, Detroit still leads the division at 50-31, 5 games better than San Francisco. Atlanta, Vegas and LA are all 10 back.

In the NL East, Pittsburgh remains in first place with a 46-35 record. New York is 3 games back while Brooklyn is 7 and Philadelphia is 8 back. In the Midwest, Chicago and Dallas are tied for first with 42-39 records. Cincinnati has made a run and is now 2 back.

The AL wins the All-Star game, 4-2. Kimmie Foxx was 1 for 4 but the 1 hit was a grand slam. He was named MVP.

July

Philadelphia has led from day 1, and currently has a 60-44 record. The Naps are 5 back in the East. In the AL West, Detroit continues to lead as well, with a 60-44 record. San Francisco is 4 back.

In the NL East, the Giants have moved into first place by 1 game over the Pirates. Brooklyn is 6 out while the Phillies are 7 out. In the Midwest, Dallas has moved out in front by 6 games over the Cubs.

August

The A’s have really pulled away in the AL East, and now lead the Senators by 9 games with a month to play. In the West, San Francisco has charged into first place and left the rest of the teams in their dust. They are currently 8 games ahead of Detroit who is slumping badly.

In the NL East, Pittsburgh has moved back into first place by 3 games over both the Dodgers and Giants. In the Midwest, Dallas has maintained their 6 game lead over the Cubs.

Chck Klein is making another run at the Babe’s single season homerun record. At the end of August, Klein has 43 homers on the season. 9 more to tie, 10 to break the record, and the guy is only 27 year old. Amazing career in front of this young man.

September 26, 1932

The A’s have clinched the AL East division. San Francisco will probably clinch in a day or two, they are 4 ahead of Detroit.

In the NL East, Pittsburgh is clinging to a 2 game lead over Dodgers. In the Midwest, Dallas has just 1 game lead over the Cubs. There are 4 games left in the regular season.

Chuck Klein has hit 49 homeruns to date.

September 27, 1932

San Francisco has clinched the AL West and will meet the A’s in the ALCS.

Pittsburgh remains 2 up in the NL East, while the Cubs and Braves are tied in the Midwest.

September 28-30, 1932

Pittsburgh clinches the NL East on September 28. Chicago moves into first by 1 game on the 28th. Klein is stuck at 49 homeruns with 2 games to play.

On the 29th, Dallas loses at home, while the Cubs clinch the Midwest with a victory in Cincinnati.

On the final day of the season, Chuck Klein fails to hit a homerun. He finishes with 49 on the year. I am sure he will give the record another run in his career.

ALCS

The Series opens in San Francisco, but it is the A’s who take game 1, 2-1. They scored 2 in the 2nd inning, and held onto the lead the rest of the way. San Francisco comes back with a blowout, 8-1 in game 2 to tie the Series up as it moves to Philadelphia.

Playing at home, the A’s are able to take game 3 in 12 innings by a final score of 2-1. The Westerners come back and tie the Series up at 2 game each with a 2-1 victory in game 4. In the pivotal game 5 from Philadelphia, the hometown A’s win 4-2 to take a 3-2 series lead heading back to San Francisco.

In a close game all the way, the Westerners force a decisive game 7 by takeing game 6, 4-3 at home.

The A’s take a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning, but the Westerners get 1 back in the bottom of the 2nd. The A’s go up 4-1 in the top of the third, but again the Westerners come back with 2 in the bottom half of the inning and the score is 4-3.

The A’s add one in the 6 to take a 5-3 lead.

Two more for the A’s in the 7th put them up 7-3. The Westerners get 1 back in the bottom of the 7th to make it 7-4.

The Westerners fail to score the rest of the way, and the visiting A’s win the game, and the Series!

NLCS

Chicago drops game 1 in their home park by a score of 4-3. They also drop game 2 at home by a final score of 10-7, and now trail 2-0 as they hit the road for the next 3 games.

Pittsburgh is on the verge of going to the Series with a 6-3 win at home in game 3. They get the brooms out for game 4 in Pittsburgh, and the Pirates do not disappoint. They break a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the ninth, and win, 3-2.

World Series

The Series is a battle of Pennsylvania, and it opens in the Pirates park, but it is the A’s who take game 1, 2-1 on a 9th inning rally. Pittsburgh answers in game 2 with a run in the 8th and 2 in the 9th to take this one 4-3 and tie the Series up heading to Philly.

The A’s win game 3 in extra innings, 5-4 and go up 2-1. Pittsburgh gets an extra inning victory of their own in game 4 by scoring 5 in the top of the 10th for a 6-1 win.

Game 5 is all Philly, as they blank the Pirates, 3-0 and are now 1 win away from a Championship, although they will have to earn it in Pittsburgh.

Philly scores in the top of the 1st and never give up the lead en route to a 4-2 victory and the 1932 Championship! This is the 3rd title for the A’s in 7 years, after going back to back in 26 and 27.

League Outlook

Boston took a dive in FI this past season, but they are an anchor in the AL East and will be given time to work their way out of it. Washington and Montreal have not shown additional declines, so they are OK for now.

Our 5 year period for expansion has come up, and expand we did. Each division now has 5 teams!

The NL East added the Syracuse Warriors.

The NL Midwest has added the Houston Astros!

The great Babe Ruth has retired from baseball. Ruth owns the career record for Homeruns with 584. He is 8th in hits with 2,771. He is first in RBI with 1,922. He is third in walks with 1,290. Ruth’s homerun record may not last more than a decade, as young Chuck Klein continue to hit homers at a record pace. He has 216 and he is just turning 28, so who knows. Ruth also owns the single season homerun record of 52, set in 1919.

Free Agency, of Note

Along with a host of good hitters, there are 2 who stand alone in this FA market, Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx.

The new Houston franchise makes the first big signing of the year with LF Al Wingo (6-4-10). He signs for 5 years.

The Cubs ink LF homer Summa (7-3-5) to a 4 year contract.

Atlanta signs SS Les Bell (6-4-6) to a 3 year deal.

25 year old Jimmie Foxx, C, (5-8-8) signs on with the New York Giants, who are trying to build back to their glory days and add another title to their 3. Foxx signed for 7 years.

The Brooklyn Dodgers sign 29 year old Lou Gehrig (6-8-10) to a 4 year deal. This immediately puts them in contention for their division crown. It will be interesting to see the Giants with Foxx battle the Dodgers this season….and don’t forget defending division champion Pittsburgh.
