April

The defending champion A’s are the team to catch early on in the AL. They open up 20-8 and hold a 3 game lead over the Atlanta Black Birds, and a 4 game lead over the LA Waves. In the NL, the Cubs are 19-9 and are 2 games up on defending NL champs, the New York Giants. The Dodgers sit just 3 back.

On April 24, the Philadelphia A’s Shoeless Joe Jackson notched his 3000th career hit is a game against the Tigers. It was a 4th inning triple!

May

The LA Waves have moved into first place with a record of 36-20. They are followed by the A’s at 35-21. The Cleveland Naps are hanging around at only 4 games off the pace. In the NL, The New York Giants went on a tear and finished up May with a 38-18 record, which is 6 games better than the Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers have fallen to 8 games back.

June

Both leagues are looking at a two team race in the second half of the season. In the AL, the A’s have moved back in front with a 55-26 record, just 1 game ahead of the LA Waves. In the NL, the Giants have a comfortable 6 game lead over the Cubs.

In the All-Star game, the NL shut out the AL, 9-0. Vic Saier was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and a homerun to be named MVP.

July

The A’s are focused on getting back to the Series and trying to repeat. They opened up a tiny bit of breathing room by finishing the month with a 70-37 record, and hold a 3 game lead over the Waves. The next closest team is Cleveland, but they are 14 back, so it is clearly a 2 team race.

In the NL, the Giants still lead the division with a 66-41 record. The Cubs are hanging around at 4 games back. The Dallas Braves moved into the race, just 6 games back. After that, Cincinnati is the closest team, but they remain 11 games off the pace.

August

Could this finally be the year for the LA Waves? They have pulled into a tie with the A’s for first place. Both teams stand at 85-51. The Waves second place finishes have been well documented. Will they get over the hump this year? In the NL, the Giants have slumped badly, allowing the Cubs not only to take first place, but build a 5 game lead over the Giants.

September 26, 1927

The Chicago Cubs have clinched the NL pennant. In the AL, the Philadelphia A’s have moved 2 games up on the Waves. Their magic number is 3, with 4 games to play.

October 1 & 2, 1927

With 2 games to play in the regular season the A’s hold just a 1 game lead over the Waves. On October 1st, the Waves travel to Philadelphia to take on the A’s!

The Waves put a run on the board in the top of the 2nd inning, but the A’s but 2 up in the bottom of the 3rd.

The A’s lead 2-1 until the top of the 6th inning, when the Waves score 2 runs, and take a 3-2 lead.

The A’s tie it up in the bottom of the 7th with a run. It is knotted at 3 with 2 innings to play.

A leadoff walk in the bottom of the 8th inning gives the A’s a 4-3 lead. They get one more run across in the inning and are up 5-3, with just 3 outs between them and the Series.

The Waves get a 2 out single in the top of the ninth to keep things going. For reasons unknown, they send the pitcher to the plate to hit with the season on the line. He pops out and the game is over. The A’s are going for the repeat against the Cubbies!

World Series

The Series starts out in Philadelphia, but the Cubs win game 1 in extra innings, and then blank the A’s, 8-0 in the second game to take a 2-0 lead going to Chicago for the middle three games of the Series.

The A’s shut out the Cubs 5-0 in game three, but the Cubs win another extra inning game in game 4 to take a commanding 3-1 Series lead.

Game 5 goes twelve innings, and the A’s are able to come out on top by a final score of 3-2 and send this one back to Philadelphia. They will have to win both games at home, but they are still alive.

The A’s score 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to take game 6, 8-6, and we are headed to a deciding Game 7!

The A’s strike first in Game 7, they get two runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning to take the 2-0 lead.

The Cubs come right back with two of their own in the top of the 4th, but the A’s are able to tack on 1 more in the bottom of that inning to regain the lead, at 3-2.

In the bottom of the 5th, the A’s may have put the Cubs away. They score 6 runs and go up 9-2.

That turns out to be the final score and the Philadelphia A’s have successfully defended their crown, and are the first team to win Back to Back World Series Titles!

Champion Review

The A’s best pitcher, Pat Bohen spent almost the entire year on the DL, but the other guys on the staff really picked it up. Cactus Keck went 23-11 with a 2.55 ERA. Hank Thormahlen went 22-7 with a 2.70 ERA. Charlie Root went 24-10 with a 2.09 ERA. Imagine their record of Bohen was able to pitch!

CF Beauty McGowan batted .287 on the season. He hit 7 homeruns and drew 101 walks. RF Joe Jackson hit .270 and stole 14 bags. 1B Memphis Bill Terry hit .247, 19 homeruns and had 83 RBI. LF Harry Heilmann batted .236 with 24 homeruns. 2B Tony Lazzeri batted only .231 but had a team high 29 homeruns,

League Outlook

All teams are doing extremely well right now. MLB has decided it would be in our best interest to realign into 4 divisions, and expand by 2 teams in the AL this season, and 2 more teams in 5 years from now in the NL.

The AL will be split into the East and West Divisions, and 2 teams will be added (designated by a *). He is the new AL alignment:

AL East:
Boston Red Sox
Cleveland Naps
Montreal Capitals (*)
Philadelphia Atheletics
Washington Senators

AL West:
Atlanta Black Birds
Detroit Tigers
Las Vegas Aces (*)
Los Angeles Waves
San Francisco Westerners

NL East:
New York Giants
Brooklyn Dodgers
Pittsburgh Pirates
Philadelphia Phillies

NL Midwest:
St. Louis Cadinals
Chicago Cubs
Cincinnati Reds
Dallas Braves

Free Agency, of Note

The Cardinals waste no time in free agency this year. They steal one of the best players from the 2 time Champion A’s in LF Harry Heilmann (6-5-8). He signed a 2 year contract.

The Cardinals also sign LF Ken Williams (5-6-5) to a 3 year deal.

SP Cactus Keck (9-8-8) is also leaving the A’s for Dallas. He signed a 7 year deal at more than 9 million per year!

The A’s recover some talent by signing SP Lefty Williams (9-9-9) to a 6 year deal at 10 million per.

SP Wilbur Cooper (7-8-6) moved from the Giants to the LA Waves.
