2003 MONTREAL POSITION REPORT: Catchers
Kenneth Whitener (Avg/Fair/Fair, 6/5/6, 32yo) is a lifetime .287 hitter (.741 OPS) with a “B” arm. He had an .801 OPS in 404 at bats last year. Whitener is a switch hitter. Jose “Wild Card” Camacho (Avg/Brl/Good,4/9/6,26yo) had an .819 OPS in 293 at bats as a rookie. The best prospect is a 3-star guy, Harold Gingras (Avg/Avg/Avg,3/4/5,21yo). Gingras was called up to AA midway through last season, and had a .729 OPS the rest of the way there.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Whitener is solid, but Camacho looks like he’s going to be a star. Whitener is making almost $3M, and is signed through 2004. I’ll probably trade him for an upgrade at another position. I’ve got other guys who can back up Camacho.
