godfather vs Chinatown is a killer!

*Cries* with each vote for The Matrix over Metropolis.

Metropolis is excellent, but the first Matrix introduced so many new elements.

I'm stunned at Toy Story walking over Casablanca. TS is very good, but Casablanca is top 5.

Ugh, I'm guessing the horrible The Lord of The Rings: Tom Bombadil Isn't In This One Either is going to obliterate Arrival.

Chinatown is so good.. But Godfather was just more powerful to me.

Lol...it is pretty funny in the context CM gave it, considering how groundbreaking Metropolis was.

That said, I voted for The Matrix, too, since I enjoy watching it more.

For me, The Matrix is a Top 5 action movie and a Top 5 SF movie of all-time. But it wasn't an easy vote for me. Had it been The Matrix vs. Faust (1926) (my favorite silent movie), I might have felt the need to abstain for not being able to decide.

Metropolis is a groundbreaking movie, but not something I'm really going to watch for it's raw entertainment value, or that I feel compelled to stop & watch if I pass by it while channel hopping. If this were suggested as a more objective 'important' movie poll rather than subjective 'favorites' I'd probably choose Metropolis, but I'm much more apt to watch & enjoy some or all of the Matrix, even though I really don't particularly find it all that interesting/entertaining anymore, with age (both it and mine).

Casablanca has the lead!

I feel sad for Lawrence of Arabia... Gladiator? Really? I mean I understand Chinatown - that draw just sucks for them.

Too bad only 11 people have seen Arrival

Gladiator is a really good movie.

I like Lawrence of Arabia, too. It is also fantastic. But I'm not too put off by Gladiator beating it.

Not only that, but I think The Matrix is more notable for how it used elements from other genres and cultures than in inventing new elements. That's not a criticism. I love The Matrix. It basically did the same thing for sci-fi films that Tarantino did for crime films or Westerns.


Yeah, and I think this comes down to a difference in how we're perceiving this poll. If I just voted on what I wanted to casually watch more, then I'd vote for 40 Year Old Virgin over Schindler's List. To me, it comes down to what is the most rewarding overall experience when I do watch it. That doesn't mean an important movie is better than a fun one (my overall favorite movie is Back to the Future), but it does mean the opposite isn't automatically true.


I've seen it and loved it, but The Two Towers is better.

I agree on The Twin Towers. That was the best LOTR. The Arrival is a good movie and I love intelligent scifi, but I don't think it losing to a LOTR movie is a big deal.

The Helms Deep sequence is one of my favorite action scenes ever.

Yes, mine as well. That end stretch makes that whole movie.

I know with no specifically defined criteria we're all coming at this from different perspectives but my 2 cents... I'm a huge LoTR fan but I felt of the three, the Two Towers was the worst of the trilogy, where as with Arrival, I thought it was a completely different perspective for the typical SciFi aliens type of movie and I absolutely loved it which is why I ended up voting for Arrival.

I agree with this. I thought Two Towers couldn't hold a candle to Fellowship, which is kind of funny, because Two Towers was easily my favorite of the books where I hated Fellowship and almost gave up on the series because of the first 100 pages of it.

That's interesting because your problem with the book is also my problem with the movie. The beginning takes forever, even with them taking out the Tom Bombadil stuff (obviously the correct decision).

But I thought in the movie there was a better sense of exploration and wonder which mitigated the dullness of the get it going... visuals, I guess help in that.

I love the books, read through them nearly every year, but I hated FotR. I went into it expecting one thing, and got something else. By the Two Towers, I had come to grips with this not being entirely faithful to the books. I was able to enjoy it a lot more, plus with it more focused on battles, the liberties they took with the story did not matter nearly as much. I thought the flashbacks showing Boromir and Faramir were great at developing their relationship which was never fully fleshed out in the books.

Then came RotK and the wheels completely fell off the franchise in my eyes.

That one was probably my favorite battle scene of all time until Game of Thrones topped it this past season.
