Mario Maker
Bought this for the kids.........OK and for me. Anybody else have this? I would like to play any levels you created and share my own. Let me know.

Maybe will get it for Xmas for the kids. You guys have Splatoon, right?
|
I want a WiiU specifically for Mario Maker.

No. Maker is the only full price game I have bought in ages. I usually hit the discount racks for Wii games. How is splatoon? Maker is so great. 4 of us always fight over who gets the create the next level. The online catalog is huge, but it can be tough weeding through the garbage ones. The 10 Mario challenge is very fun. I haven't even touched the 100 Mario challenge yet. I published 2 levels, and got 1 total play through with no star or comments. I'm not sure how to get them played by others. I am particularly proud of 1, but it has no plays yet. |

I don't think WiiU is that much of an upgrade over the Wii, but I find either system much more fun than Xbox/PS. I have a 360 and I can't see myself ever upgrading, at least not this generation. My tastes have changed though. My kids are hitting game playing ages and the Wii/WiiU is much more suited for their skill levels and there is a much greater volume of games that we can all play together. |
Xmas list for the kids.

Splatoon is basically an FPS for kids. But its also got crazy gameplay elements like you can randomly turn into a squid and swim and jump like crazy. It is also a 1 person game tho. Both of my kids 11+16 like it. The whole point of the MP is to cover the arena with the most ink, so you technically don't even need to FPS if you want to just play strategically. May be something you'd want to rent first or watch some gameplay videos of. But I think any kid will like it. And you also see a lot of people named "dad" in MP matches so you can tell it has a wide appeal. Highly recommended. We'll def get Mario Maker for Xmas as well.

My youngest son just got Mario Maker for his 5th birthday. What a great game! He and his brother (6) have already spent hours building levels and playing them. I've built a couple, too, and had a great time! Probably the most amazing console game I've played in... a looooong time.

Watched far too much of aa video of a Kotaku guy trying to beat a level for 2 hours.

Now that I'm buying games I would usually buy for console on PC instead (NBA 2K, in particular) I'm starting to think I could see myself making the jump back to Nintendo as far as consoles go. |
My son has let it be known that a Wii U and Mario Maker are the top two items on his list. I know there is a Walmart bundle. Is that the best option? Does it come with two controllers? Our daughter will want to play.
Speaking of controllers, are there different kinds? I know there are controllers that look like a DS almost. My wife seems to think there are other kinds too. (I've never researched the Wii U because I wasn't interested.) Anyhow, any advice from our Nintendo veterans would be greatly appreciated. |

The Wii U only comes with the Gamepad, which is the tablet controller. As far as other controllers there is the Pro Controller, which is similar to the XBox pad or Dual Shock. It can also use any of the Wii controllers. Each retail game has a graphic on the box that shows what controllers work with it. EDIT: Controller information for Super Mario Maker http://supermariomaker.nintendo.com/manual/page_13.html Wii U GamePad Wii Remote Wii U Pro Controller Wii Remote + Classic Controller Pro ◆ Only one Wii U GamePad controller can be used. Only the Wii U GamePad controller is used to create stages. ◆ A Wii Remote™ controller can only be used while playing courses. It should be held in the horizontal position. ◆ A Wii Remote™ Plus controller can be used instead of a Wii Remote controller. ◆ You can use a Classic Controller™ instead of a Classic Controller Pro™. |

I've been glancing around at Wii U deals and it looks like there may be a black friday bundle that comes with Smash Bros and Splatoon for $250. So if you pick up Mario Maker separately that's pretty much two more excellent games for just $10 more. |
Get the Splatoon bundle. It's freaking amazing.
|
Thanks for the advice, guys. I think we'll go with the Splatoon bundle and pick up Mario Maker separately, as recommended.

Target has a $15 gift card with purchase of Mario Maker as well
Super Mario Maker (Nintendo Wii U) : Target |
