Schedules are set

This is the part where we pretend to have a damn clue and make predictions:
Capitals in 6 - I want to see the Rangers beat the Caps, but just can't come up with any logical way it happens. Lundqvist might have to steal 4 1-0 games for it to happen Flyers in 6 - Same as above, Miller would have to be the best player on the ice for the series. Habs in 7 - Everything says the Bruins should be able to pound Montreal over 7 games...but they didn't do it during the year (other than that 7-0 game). Pens in 7 - Homer pick. Would be a hell of alot easier if Crosby was back. But, at some point James Neal has to start scoring, and that might be just enough to put them over the top. Canucks in 7 - Probably the last team the Canucks wanted to see, but they've got just enough to win. Sharks in 5 - LA just not playing all that well and have some injuries. Wings in 6 - Keeping the right to revise this if Howard is terrible game 1, but Wings should be better, period. Ducks in 7 - I don't like that most (all?) of the scoring for Anaheim comes from one line. But, that's still more scoring than Nashville has. See Lundqvist, Miller notes above and apply to Rinne. |
I'll try to reserve the comments for series I have a slight clue about
Caps in 5 Flyers in 5 Bruins in 6 Pens in 7 Canucks in 5 - Chicago just isn't that good. Past be damned, the Canucks are scary in every department. Sharks in 7 - I think LA keeps this very close and with Kopitar they send the Sharks home early again, but they just don't have the star power to actually win the series. If Quick looks like a young goalie this series could be over a lot sooner Coyotes in 7 - obviously betting against Detroit is not a good idea, but I just get the feeling that the Wings are going to disappoint this year, and Bryzgalov is a stud in big games Preds in 5 - a decent amount of negative-homer karma vibes in this one, but Nashville scares me a lot and this is a Ducks team that is pretty young in key areas and still takes way too many penalties. Plus a HUGE goaltending question mark - I can see a four seed followed by a disappointing early exit here. |
Quote:
Who knows what will happen, but the Wings did put up 3.44 GA on Bryzgalov last year in the first round. The series did go 7 games last year, so it should be interested to watch this time around. |
Go Panthers!
...wait, you mean they didn't make the playoffs THIS year either? :( |
Id expect there to be a huge upset or two in round 1. Out of all professional sports playoffs the NHL seems the most unpredictable. It seems every other year an 8 seed is knocking off a 1 seed.

Is there any word on Hiller? I haven't been following very closely. I think if there was one team the Ducks could afford to not have Hiller against, it might be Nashville. They can not score. Plus I am banking on them riding the Perry-train for another week or so. |
I wish one year i'd have a reason to post in this thread:(

Look at the bright side-- you won't have to be concerned with The Official NHL Draft Lottery thread either (and not just because you don't have your first rounder) |
Quote:
I don't see how they can put Hiller in - his one game in 3 months he got completely lit up, he's still not completely over the symptoms as far as I can tell (but they are keeping it close to the chest) and they have 2 other goalies who have been pretty damn good when they've got a chance. Maybe you throw him in first game of the second round or if you are getting blown out and the other two aren't getting it done but I think it's more likely he doesn't play again this season. |
Sabres in 6 - Buffalo has been the best team in teh east since Pegula bought the team (16-4-4) Goaltending wins cups, They have Miller and Enroth probably the most solid tandem in the league currently.
Capitals in 5 - Hard to argue with this one. The caps are on top, the Rangers are hurting and have faded badly down teh stretch. I don't see that changing. Canadiens in 6 - Blood Feud. You can ignore the comments that this is just another series, these two teams really hate one another. If Montreal avoids Boston's bullying and stays out of the box their power play will carry them. Penguins in 5 - I'm just not a Tampa Fan. They started hot, then cooled off and finished kinda flat. Pittsburgh is the team this season that just finds a way to win games. Canucks in 5 - Is this their year? its hard to tell with the bi-polar way they can play at times. I think they handle the Blackhawks and advance. Sharks in 5 - They're simply the better team here. They let one game slip away but should cruise. Coyotes in 6 - This is the team that may shock people. Very little coverage outside their region and they have one of the hottest young talents in the league. Goaltending wins bryzgalhov(sp?) plays huge this time of year. Predators in 6 - Tough defensive team designed to win playoff games. They live and die with their goaltending. |
Capitals in 6 - Dola, I want to see the Rangers beat the Caps, but with Callahan out, most of the team already badly druised and big question marks on the play of Christensen, Gaborik and Wolski, it will take a big team effort to overcome the Caps. Then again, if Henrik stops it all, Drury finds his game (hey, he managed to finally outscore Lundqvist this season with the goal in the Devils game) and the kids put on a show, then maybe...
Sabres in 7 - Flyers have been iffy for the last few weeks and Buffalo are playing well with Miler coming back as well, while Flyers are most questionable between the pipes. Bruins in 6 - Tim Thomas wills it himself if nothing else. Pens in 7 - Tough one to call, but Roloson is a suspect and the ice will surely be tilted for Bettman's pets ? ;) Canucks in 5 - Surely they will keep their form ? Sharks in 5 - Niemi will take them deep and they've got the depth in scoring. Phoenix in 6 - Suprise pick of the first round ? Ducks in 5 - - As long as Ducks get decent goaltending, they should have this one in the bag. Obviously those will all probably be widely off the mark  |

Canucks in 6
Sharks in 5 Red Wings in 5 Ducks in 6 Sabres in 6 Bruins in 7 Pittsburgh in 6 and finally Rangers in 4 - Called in from HiFi in the penalty box. |
Caps in 6
Flyers in 5 Bruins in 5 Lightning in 6 Canucks in 6 Sharks in 5 Coyotes in 6 Predators in 7 |
I'm not going to bother predicting series finishes (since I'm terrible at it), but I'd just like to say:
1) I want the Coyotes to lose in 4 so that this whole "will Phoenix or Atlanta move to Winnipeg" thing can really start moving; and 2) Until one of them does move to Winnipeg, Go Rangers! |
So I was at the Red Wings / Blackhawks game yesterday (in my Wings jersey thankyouverymuch), and it was kind of fun seeing all the long faces and dejected body language walking out of there. Sure, they still made it in thanks to Dallas wetting the bed, but I just don't see them getting very far.
Go Wings! |
As a Kings fan, I agree with Sharks in 5. Kings just don't have a chance without kopitar and williams
|
Rangers in 6
Flyers in 6 Bruins in 7 Pens in 5 Canucks in 7 Sharks in 4 Wings in 7 Ducks in 6 |
Anyone here up for fantasy hockey for the playoffs? I was thinking each team would consist of 4F-2D-1G, with 1 pt per point scored and 1.5 pts per win for goalies, unless someone else has a better idea. It would have to be a quick thread draft, as well.
|
I'd join in.

I've done elsewhere, and here last year with a few others, the following:
Rank all teams 1 to 16. 16 being your Cup winner. Each win is 1* your ranking. I'd be willing to track again if we get enough interested. But I'd do the fantasy draft as well. |
Don't click if you want to be surprised.

I'd also be interested, but guessing it would be even harder now with it getting closer to the start. Assuming we can't get it up and running, what about instead of a draft, we do something where we all select a team of players of our choice? Maybe double the roster spots posted above, no more than one player from each team, some other interesting rules possible, etc. Rosters shouldn't end up too similar, best lineup wins. edit: If we do three forward lines, two defensemen lines, a pair of goalies, and an "extra attacker" per team, that gets us to 16 players or one from each club. |
Since there's only been a few replies and we're out of time to do a draft, I'm going with Logan's suggestion that we select a group of players - 10 F, 4 D, 2 G with one player from each team in the playoffs. We'll use the scoring from the ESPN Playoff Hockey Challenge
Rules: - Roster: 10 F, 4 D, 2 G - one player from each team in the playoffs - Scoring: Forwards and defensemen receive one (1) point per goal and one (1) point per assist. Additionally, defensemen receive one (1) point per shutout as long as they record at least 1 minute of play on the ice. Goalies receive two (2) points per win, and one (1) bonus point per shutout. - Salary Cap: $140 million - based on ESPN Playoff Hockey Challenge values (listed in following posts) - Roster must be posted by Wednesday @ 7 PM EST - no changes after playoffs start (I'm open to injury substitutions - let me know what you think) When you're ready post the roster as follows: Username: TurnerONU22 F Sidney Crosby - PIT - 12.0 F F F F F F F F F D D D D G G Total Cost: 137.8 |

Thanks for the heads up. I skimped on the D, we'll see how this strategy goes. Hopefully we can get a few more entries before 7. |
I am going to join...hopefully...but with limited net access at work, I will be pushing the 7pm deadline.
|
No big deal on the deadline on my end. If Brandon Prust scores a natty HT in the 1st period of tonight's game, and he's on your team when you submit at 8:30 though...there may be hell to pay.
Can't concentrate at work even though I'm not expecting a ton out of the Rangers this series (although I do think we have a shot). Just very, very excited for playoff hockey. |

Ugh. I hope the Devils don't make a habit of this shit. I'm just going to find myself rooting against teams rather than for them.

We will gladly accept you, and all other Devils fans, as an Honorary Detroit Red Wings fans for the duration of the 2011 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. Enjoy the ride! |
Come on, Pittsburgh is exclusively made up of bandwagoners. We've perfected it! If you are going to jump on and bandwagon, why not the team that's made an art of it?
|
I hope when you jump onto the Wings or Pens wagon, you miss and slam your Devil fan face on the asphalt.
;). You guys will be back. Lucking into the #4 pick will certainly help. |
