All Around Sports Team Draft Sign Up Thread (2 Spots Available)
Came up with what I think could be a fun idea for a draft, wherein people draft a team of athletes who will have to participate in four different sports (baseball, basketball, football, soccer).
Here are the specifics... 1. You will draft a team of 13 athletes and 1 coach. 2. Each athlete will be placed into a lineup for Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Soccer. 3. You are limited to 3 players who play (or did play) competitively at the college or pro level in football, baseball, or soccer, and 2 players in basketball. The other 2 athletes must come from some other sport. (If your athlete was a two sport star, they will only count against your total for the sport you pick, but this cannot be one of your "other sport" picks). 4. Since basketball has a small roster, every player you draft will be playing a minimum of 5 minutes in each game. 5. Your football players will be playing both ways. You will include all 22 standard positions, a Kicker/Punter, and a Kick/Punt returner. 6. For baseball, you will draft 8 position players, 4 Starting Pitchers, and a Closer. 7. For soccer, you will have two reserve players that do not need a designated position. Reserve players also bound to the 5 minute rule. 10. You cannot draft Jesus. 11. The following is required when making your pick: Round and Pick number, Team Name, Athlete Name, Sport 12. You should draft assuming the athletes are playing at their prime. You can draft no more than 7 athletes who are retired. 13. At the end, the board will vote to determine the winners. Too crazy? If you're interested, please reply with your team city and nickname. We'll get started when 12 participants sign up. |

56 round draft?
Interesting, but it takes around 10 days to do a 12 round draft, so this would take a long time and you'll probably lose people along the way. Just don't get Izulde, his draft will fall apart at pick 5 and he will have to work through another 51 rounds then.. :) |
No, it's just a 14 round draft.
Your 14 players will each play in 4 different sports. So you draft Pujols, then you have to pick a position for him in basketball, football, and soccer. The idea is to find people who could theoretically be good in multiple sports. |

Ahhh.. got it. I was way off. Thought the draft was drafting 4 teams of 13 players and a coach. |
Ok wait, no one named Jesus AND you can draft soccer players? WTF ;)
|
Sounds like it will be fun but I am not sure if I can participate though.
|
Interesting and thinking about it but two things are holding me back. First is the inability to switch players at a position. I'd rather do the draft and then set positions.
Secondly is the four retired players designation. I'd rather go current day where each player is judged as they are today, or alternatively go all time where every player is judged in their prime. I would assume that if retired players count, then they are going to be measured off their prime and not how they would fare at today at age 45 or 50. Would the same be said of current players? For example, would I be measuring Jerry Rice against a modern day Randy Moss or Moss at his prime. If we are measuring everyone at their prime, why limit it to only four retired? |
Good points. I have edited the rules accordingly.
|
I'm definitely in.
|
Sounds good. I'm in.
|
Nah you have to assume player in his prime, right? Makes it more interesting and opens up the universe a bit.
|
Really interesting concept.

I'll volunteer one strong opinion from a potential player... I think this is the wrong call. I think it would be *much* more interesting to be drafting historical athletes who either did play or (we argue) could have played multiple sports than to be pinned to drafting only guys in their athletic prime today. If I'm reading that rule above as being the latter, I think you're killing the most interesting idea in this setup, and hope you'd reconsider. |
oooh, i'll play. after all my license plate says luv2drft. which the kids think means love to drift... it's a pontiac aztec.
|
Well the original idea was to have 4 historical athletes and the rest would be current athletes. I'm open to switching back to that if that's what most people prefer. We can assume that the current players are playing at their prime.
|
Can I play?
|
I'm just one guy, and you'll fill this thing without me... so this may not be worth much. But I have a ton of interest in playing this if it's open to all historical players "in their prime," but nearly zero interest if the only players I can use for most of my slots are contemporary athletes. But it's fine with me whatever you choose... you're the boss.
|
And to answer Carman's earlier question, the reason to limit it to four retired is to create some strategy. Most of the drafts have some kind of historical/current divide that adds some strategy to the picks.
|
i think one or two is okay. 4 might be a bit much imo. it's hard for me to put historicals into modern athletic context.
'jim thorpe was good at everything.' was he? or was he competing against a bunch of skinny white guys? i dunno. just sayin. |
Dibs on Joan Benoit Samuelson.

And what about a half and half compromise?

I'm strongly leaning towards this. |
For those definitely in, go ahead and pick your team city and nicknames.

I'd think it would make sense to use relative comparisons here, judging them on how good they were against their contemporaries, but the way these drafts work is it's ultimately up to the voters to set that criteria. It's up to you to make a strong case for your team. |

Yup. |
Updated confirmed list of participants in second post. Still 7 spots open.

I'm glad I didn't even bother to make that joke which Leafs would've one-upped anyway.
|
LOL. The only reason I didn't pick hockey (other than not overwhelming the participants with too many sports) is that it seemed more difficult than the others to judge talent across the different sports.
|
Crap, this is tempting. But unfortunately, I have a ton of reading to do over the next month, so I have to pass.

Updated rule 12 with compromise suggestion.
Still 7 slots open. |

Hmmm, I'll join even though I shouldn't as the next week is busy for me.
|
If you can handle the fact I can only check this site at night anymore since it's now blocked at work, I am in. Sounds pretty cool, though I know nothing about baseball which is bound to kill me.

This is fine as long as you can PM me with your pick lists. I'll pick from that if you're not here when it's your turn. |
5 spots left.

sign me up boss.
|
4 spots left.

Hey larry, I think I am going to drop out. I have a busy few days coming and I may not be able to participate effectively.
Thanks for the opportunity though. |
I love drafts. Can I be in?
