Current TV commercials

Today is the most TV I have watched, with commercials, in quite a while. So, I'm being newly exposed to commercials that others have probably been seeing for a while. But - a few impressions...

- I like the IBM "help desk" ads. Every one I have seen seemed well done, and intriguing, to some degree. It doesn't hook me all that much to IBM, but that's secondary.

- I can definitely do with the apparent drop in ads featuring football referees and beer. Never thought any of those were any good.

- Yeah, those of you who have been complaining about the ads for Levitra and so forth... I see your point.

- It took about twenty ads, but I might actually watch that "NUMB3RS" show. I'm still convinved it will be the type of show I'd like, but that I won't actually like it. (cf. ESPN's "Tilt")

Joe 01-23-2005 07:46 PM

i could do without the progressive insurance commercials.

cthomer5000 01-23-2005 07:49 PM

Yeah, I've seen the Numbers ad enough to think about giving it a shot. If it disappoints, fine (and I'm fairly certain it will).

cuervo72 01-23-2005 07:54 PM

The commercial for the truck cargo system (Toyota?) with the turkey, the foosball table, and the two girls jumping up and down. Ok, really just the two girls. Gets me to turn around when I'm on the computer every time.

Farrah Whitworth-Rahn 01-23-2005 08:06 PM

It's not really a current commercial, I think it came out last year. It was for H&R Block, and Willie Nelson was talking about tax advice. Cracks me up just thinking about it.

Abe Sargent 01-23-2005 08:07 PM

That Nike Pro Gear "Warriors" commercial is seriously f'ed up.

Logan 01-23-2005 08:13 PM

Glad I'm not the only poor sap who's been intrigued by the ads for Numb3rs.

Yeah. I had the mouth-open look seeing that the first time. That's got to be what they were looking for...

Pyser 01-23-2005 08:17 PM

hey! mastercard just DIRECTLY stole a scene from Swingers! that couldnt have been a coincidence, and it didnt seem like they were trying to make it look like the movie...

I was just saying that. Some of those masks are pretty cheesy (to put it nicely) looking.

I immediately thought Swingers also.

Same here.

TLK 01-23-2005 08:46 PM

I wasn't to intrigued by Numb3ers, until they gave it the extended promo during the game. It looks promising....

cuervo72 01-23-2005 08:52 PM

Hmm, just saw a commercial for Hyatt Gold Passport which begins with a woman getting a mud massage. They start with a full length view of her lying face down, at enough of an angle where you can see some of her behind (not perfectly perpendicular to the camera), and it's pretty apparent she's not wearing anything. Well, except for a thin layer of mud.

This was during Larry King Live...pretty sure that won't be airing on any of the networks (A.J.J.).

RPI-Fan 01-23-2005 09:18 PM

Count me in on the NUMB3RS boat.

I was intrigued until I watched the show. Ugh...

Yeah, I'll agree with that. Those masks are ridiculous. I wonder if Urlacher and the others know just how incredibly stupid they look*?

*granted they're getting paid, so I doubt they really care...

Adamski47 01-23-2005 10:59 PM

The Nike commercial was very very well done. At least I thought so but I'm a television production teacher so maybe I just got sucked in.

Ragone 01-23-2005 10:59 PM

Bob has a swelling of confidence.. and a new found respect from the neighborhood

god i hate those commercials

yep, got mad when i saw that for the first time last night, so mad i abruptly stated they stole a scene from a movie, so a bunch of kids asked which movie, i said swingers, and they did (but i have a f'in poster of the movie in my room!).

seriously, it's almost a direct rip. i'm po'ed about it.

Easy shorty.. no reason to beat up anyone over it or anything :)

Adamski47 01-23-2005 11:07 PM

The Swingers commercial was a rip. The girl's name is even Nikki (and his name is Mike/Mikey). There's no debating that one. Shallow and 8 years too late.

If the general audience thinks it sucks ass then why does it matter if a television production teacher thinks it was well done?

Exactly.. the little nuances are going to be lost on the "Target" audience..

You'd have to answer that question yourself because I certainly never asked it.

That doesn't even make sense...

I'd have to answer my own question because you didn't ask it?

Always wonder,
What makes a "good" commerical?

My training as a mass communications student taught me that a "good" commercial is one that you remember. You remember the commercial, and you remember the product it's advertising. More importantly, though, is when you remember it. If you remember it when you're looking for that type of product, the commercial has done its job.

The above is what makes a commercial good from a professional standpoint. From the consumer's point of view, though, I guess a good commercial is one that you enjoy talking about with other people later.

I guess the guy with the idea could attest it as a tribute to a favorite movie of his, but to me that would only be acceptable if Favreu made a short cameo or there was a Swingers poster in the background.

Grr

Pumpy Tudors 01-24-2005 03:09 AM

I've seen Swingers three times, and my wife has only seen it once, but even she noticed that that commercial was a complete ripoff at the same time I did.

Ksyrup 01-24-2005 07:26 AM

Numb3rs looks like a CSI-type rip-off, with a twist. I don't even watch the other 2 CSIs, so I'm not watching this one.

Plus, they're touting this guy for being a math wiz, but on one of the commercials, in an attempt to make the show look dramatic or something (I guess), they have him telling his brother that "he's got a change in the location" of the shooter (or something like that)...which leads me to believe that this "math wiz" forgot to carry the 1.

"Hey, I'm only as good as the numbers I'm given."

Not interested.

Well, just for the record, one of the victims had lied about where she was attacked, so his grid of locations was inaccurate.

Honolulu_Blue 01-24-2005 08:27 AM

I don't understand that Raisin Bran commercial, you know the one where that guy is in the office and he has to go fire "Johnson" or whatever the hell his name is. He walks to the guy's desk, thinks he's gone and starts dancing and saying "Johnson is gone, Johnson is gone." Then Johnson rolls into view eating Raisin Bran. I don't get it. What exactly are they saying about Raisin Bran other than it's crunchy?

Get a job.

rkmsuf 01-24-2005 09:17 AM

I wish they had told me numbers was on after the game. I had no idea.

That show looks incredibly stupid.

Lathum 01-24-2005 09:19 AM

I don't remeber where I saw it but it is a Chips a - hoy commercial and it is a little girls birthday. They are all singing happy birthday, including the giant cookie. Then the cookie asks "where's the cake ?" and the girl says we're not having cake. It's kind of sick in an evil sort of way.

I agree. At first, when I heard the actor using a nasely sort of voice I even thought for a split second that it was him. Wishful thinking. With a 'non-Favreau actor' it just looks like a real bad impression of an old bit. If Favreau was the actor in the commercial I probably would have laughed.

Radii 01-24-2005 01:19 PM

the nike commercial was just weird. Mouth-open look is a good description for me too.

The referees and the beer for Miller I didn't really like, but the Bud response w/ the referee's just wanting to steal the Bud Light I found to be hilarious.

I think the two sets of commercials that annoy me the most in the past few months are the David Spade "NO" commercials for Capital One and the McDonald's "Stay away from my Chicken Selects" commercials. Both make me cringe(David Spade has always had that effect on me though).

Anthony 01-24-2005 01:29 PM

Actually, I've been enjoying the bizarre and completely head-scratching evolution of the Chicken Selects commercials. First, there was this weird guy who told others in his office to stay away from his Chicken Selects. Then, he was by himself in his home, telling nonexistent others to stay away from his Chicken Selects. Then, the Chicken Selects themselves started talking.

Is this what it's like to be on acid?

SunDancer 01-24-2005 01:56 PM

I think Southwest Airlines does the best commericals.

That's been around a while but it's funny as hell in a sadistic sort of way :D

I like the Wild Cherry Pepsi commercial where the guy jumps up and his hands get stuck in the ceiling. It took a second viewing to get the part where the guy below them who jumps up also because there was a flag on the play.

TargetPractice6 01-24-2005 05:46 PM

The McDonalds salad commercial annoys me so much that I force myself to mute the TV and turn away everytime it comes on.

lol....like the commercial with the couple trying to get into their brand new car and the guy figures the key-lock is stuck because he can't open the door and is furiously jamming the hanger-wire into the side of the car....then gives up and throws a big ass rock at the window...when some guy walks up with some shopping bags and asks, "What are you doing to my car?"

And of course the stunned couple then see "their" car that is identical to his is parked in the next lane over.

Wanna get away?
