What to Watch Instantly on Netflix? (and now all streaming services)

Seen anything good you'd like us to check out? Post it here. For me:

Arrested Development
30 Rock
South Park (Seasons 1-12)
X-Files
Zombieland
National Geographic: The Human Family Tree
Cosmos: The Complete Collection

There's a bunch of other stuff I can't remember right now, but these are the ones I've enjoyed the most. What have you seen recently that's worth watching?

sabotai 12-07-2010 12:57 AM

I just finished watched the first season of "Louie" (starring Louis CK). It was pretty awesome.

Matthean 12-07-2010 01:48 AM

My instant queue is at 80.

King of Kong
Avatar: The Last Air Bender Series, not the movie crap
The Good, The Bad, The Weird
Seven Samurai, along with a number of other Akira Kurosawa's films
Pushing Daises
Veronica Mars Season 1
Man on a Wire
Roxanne. I want to rewatch it because I think it gets lost in my list of classic romantic comedies and want to give it another go to see how it fairs this time.
Moribito Series. Each episode comes across as being far too short(20 minutes really), but I like the series.

I just started a 30-day trial of the streaming only service. I see some older shows that I wouldn't mind revisiting, but do you really feel it is a good value for what will be $8/month? "Newer" shows like The Shield & The Wire don't appear to be available for streaming. I read they were negotiating with the networks to get more current content. I don't know - maybe I should wait for that to happen. Your thoughts?

I personally don't find enough stuff to stream that would make me happy paying $8 a month just for those titles. Their streaming only catalog is pretty large but mostly older stuff. (With the exception of Starz play and such).

I personally enjoy using the streaming ability to catch up on some older movies I missed some how. For instance lately I've been catching up on some older Clint Eastwood movies that I had never seen. Those usually take a back seat for me though when I have something newer available though.

Butter 12-07-2010 07:33 AM

I enjoyed "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". It is subtitled though. And a bit rough to watch at times.

Today a new documentary was released on both DVD and Netflix's Instant Streaming. The film is Restrepo and it is filmed by Sebastian Junger. It documents the Korengal Valley and the American soldiers there in Afghanistan. His book, WAR , was phenomenal and I have pretty high hopes for this documentary.

Just watched this. Check it out.

This is the same region that the recent Medal of Honor recipient was stationed. He was not in the documentary, but the battle is highlighted (his valor not mentioned).

cubboyroy1826 12-07-2010 04:49 PM

Big fan of Sanctuary and Netflix has Season 1 and 2.

DataKing 12-07-2010 05:09 PM

There are a bunch of MST3K episodes available On Demand.

Peregrine 12-07-2010 07:41 PM

Really so many choices - the first four seasons of the new Dr Who are there, very good stuff if you are into sci-fi. I am currently watching Survivors, a British series about surviving after a worldwide plague. There are also a lot of good documentaries.

mauchow 12-07-2010 07:49 PM

Can someone help me out here.. does Netflix offer Closed Captioning on their instant viewing yet? I had Netflix for a few years before finally dropping it due to this..

mckerney 12-07-2010 07:55 PM

Antmeister and I saw this, excellent series and some great characters.

Matthean 12-07-2010 09:39 PM

This reminded me to check to see if the Spaced series(Simon Pegg/Nick Frost) was there and it is, but not as instant.

PilotMan 12-07-2010 11:31 PM

Some yes, some no.

Grammaticus 12-08-2010 07:01 AM

Spartacus the series.

Comey 12-08-2010 10:25 AM

I've gotten into Weeds quite a bit due to Netflix.

I saw a couple of these on BBCA, looked good, but seemed like something I'd only enjoy if I saw it from the beginning. Now that it's on netflix I'll certainly put it in the queue.

I watches this series when it first came on BBCA...pretty good stuff. Hopefully we'll have a second season (or whatever the messed up BBC equivalent is) soon...

moriarty 12-08-2010 05:20 PM

7 Samurai
Girl with Dragon Tattoo
Man on Wire
Lots of other good documentaries + TV shows
(they need to get Seinfeld on here)

There are two seasons on Netflix, unfortunately it looks like the show was cancelled after that.

saldana 12-08-2010 06:36 PM

if you like historical dramas, The Pillars of the Earth was awesome..8 hour mini series set in 12th century england.

Peregrine 12-09-2010 05:26 AM

Ditto Saldana, forgot to mention that one. I found it to be excellent, though slightly changed from the book.

Thank you, sir...I must have missed the second season completely. Of course, with only six episodes, I guess it is easy to.

Mizzou B-ball fan 12-09-2010 11:09 PM

Watched a documentary called 'Crossing the Line'. It covers the story of a U.S. soldier who defected to North Korea in the 1960s. Pretty interesting stuff.

Peregrine 12-10-2010 07:19 AM

I really liked the documentary 180 South - it's about some guys that head south on a long trek by sea to Patagonia to surf and climb a mountain - also some nice interviews with the guys who inspired them by doing the same thing in 1968. Some really, really beautiful cinematography.

Mizzou B-ball fan 12-22-2010 11:08 PM

Think it was mentioned before, but I watched Restrepo and would also highly recommend it. Excellent look at warfare from the front lines.

Matthean 01-08-2011 05:18 PM

Please Vote for Me. Documentary of a 3rd grade class in communist China gets to do a democratic election for class monitor.

Mizzou B-ball fan 02-02-2011 08:35 AM

Watched 'Hitman Hart: Wrestling with Shadows' last night. It's a documentary from 1998. Pretty interesting look behind the scenes of pro wrestling.

I agree, I got a kick out of it. Nothing jaw dropping there, but it was a good show.

I'll also pimp "10 Items or Less". The first few episodes aren't that great, but as it goes on the cast blends better and the show gets funnier. Similar to the Office and Parks and Rec. And quite a bit of the show is simply improvisation.

wade moore 02-02-2011 09:17 AM

I know others mentioned it already, but I'll mention Survivors.

The Wife and I just watched season 1 and it was FANTASTIC. Seriously one of the best shows I've seen in awhile.

I see season 2 is up there too, so we'll catch that soon.

larrymcg421 02-02-2011 10:04 AM

Parks and Recreation Season 1 & 2. For those that think The Office has fallen off a bit, Parks and Recreation is like the best days of the Office.

PilotMan 02-02-2011 06:05 PM

Cosby Show, That 70s Show, and 3rd Rock from the Sun FTW! Every season!

Critch 02-02-2011 07:47 PM

Jar City (Myrin in Icelandic) is worth watching, if you're in the mood for a subtitled, bleak, police procedural movie.

Scored 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Yeah I just started watching this last week and am loving it. I think it helps that I haven't watched SNL the last 10 or so years so I find Amy Poehler's character hilarious and don't carry any of the hatred baggage of what she was like on SNL. (Same with Tina Fey and Tracy Morgan on 30 Rock, caught all 5 seasons of that show on Netflix instant as well)

Thanks for the tip. I just watched season one today. I found it to basically be "The Office" set in a local government office. Not too bad.

cschex 02-03-2011 07:53 AM

Parks and Recreation is on my list. Currently, I'm loving that all of The Larry Sanders Show is on Instant, especially because I was too young to catch it on HBO when it was first on and they only recently released it all to DVD.

Oh, and Kids in the Hall. Never fails to crack me up

Scoobz0202 02-13-2011 12:18 PM

The Devil Came on Horseback

From IMDB:

Quote:

A documentary that exposes the genocide raging in Darfur, Sudan as seen through the eyes of a former U.S. marine who returns home to make the story public.

One of the better documentaries I've seen in awhile.

Qwikshot 02-13-2011 01:17 PM

Gasland, if it's available...jaw dropping expose on fracking.

Obviously it's nothing jaw-dropping now, but when it came out, it was pretty revealing.

Comey 02-13-2011 01:37 PM

I am watching The Larry Sanders Show. It helped set the bar for shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm. Great writing, and just a very cool show. I was 12 when it started to air, and I didn't have HBO...so I'm happy to be able to see it now.

Young Drachma 02-13-2011 03:37 PM

The Street Stops Here (Bob Hurley and St. Anthony's basketball documentary)
Henry Fool
My Girlfriend's Boyfriend (a surprisingly good rom-com with Alyssa Milano)

I just watched this. Really good stuff. I found the soundtrack on Amazon and plan on purchasing that as well.
