NCAA Pick 5 - v4
The previous organizer appears to have not done this, and I always liked it.
I know we've only got 2 hours left, but I want to try and get people in it. Here are the links to the previous competitions (I'll add 2010 in a bit): 2006 (Winner: TazFTW, 83 pts.) ANOTHER NCAA tourney game - Front Office Football Central 2007 (Winner: ram, 89 pts.) NCAA "Pick 5" - Year 2 - Front Office Football Central 2009 (Winner: mauboy1 - 87 pts.) http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/...ight=ncaa+pick Rules You pick five teams from this year's NCAA Tournament field. Points are awarded based on how far each of your teams advance, with bonus points given based on the team's seed. You get one point for winning in the first round, 2 for the second, 3 for the regional semis, 4 for the regional finals, 5 for the national semifinal, and 6 for the national championship. Then, for each game your team wins, you get points that match the number of seed they are. For example, say you picked North Carolina (a No. 1 seed), and they advanced to the Final Four. You would get: (1+1) + (2+1) + (3+1) + (4+1) = 14 points for selecting the Tar Heels. Or, if you pick Belmont, and they win 2 games, they would get (15+1) + (15+2) = 33 points. As you can see, a well placed 10+ seeded team notching an upset or two is just as valuable as a 1 or 2 seed going to the Final 4. Good luck, everyone! Any questions, just post them here. Post your picks here, too. If you want to change your picks, just edit your post. Any posts with an edit time of after Thursday, noon Eastern will be ruled ineligible. The opening round game does not count, for purposes of this game. I will try to update every day, as allowable by my work schedule. |

My Picks:
Duke (1) West Virginia (2) Old Dominion (11) Cornell (12) Syracuse (1) |
Cornell (12)
St. Mary's (10) Xavier (6) Baylor (3) West Virginia (2) |
Villanova (2)
Xavier (6) Washington (11) Utah State (12) Wisconsin (4) |
Kansas-1
Georgetown-3 UTEP-12 West Virgina-2 Duke-1 |
Murray St. (13)
Siena (13) Texas(8) Wisconsin(4) Duke(1) |
I'm thinking of letting sign-ups go until about 1:00. The 3 games that will have started will be around halftime. Seems minimal impact to pick up a few extra entries. We've had a lot of entries in past seasons, hoping we can get at least say 15 this year.

Georgetown (3)
Texas (8) Siena (13) Old Dominion (11) BYU (7) |
I'll go with:
Kansas (1) Duke (1) West Virginia (2) Wisconsin (4) Murray St (13) |

Siena (13) Syracuse (1) West Virginia (2) Baylor (3) |
Also - I PMd Butter to see if he already has a spreadsheet built for this. If not, I'll build one - but it may mean day 1 score updating will be delayed cause I'd likely do it tonight.

Closed.
Got the spreadsheet from Butter, so I'll work on updating it - still might be tonight before I have everyone in there cause of work. |
First Scoring update (right after the Georgetown game finished) - a few people getting double digit seed wins already - gstelmack in the early lead getting an 11 (ODU) and a 7 (Butler) right - although he loses Georgetown early which I'm guessing wasn't part of the plan.

Butler is a 5 seed not a 7. |
Sorry -BYU, not Butler.

Nope, Georgetown fooled me with the strong season finish, so they were expected to go a few rounds. This is how this game goes with me though: a few early upsets, then I fade as I lose all my teams early. Oh yeah, and Texas was supposed to win at least 1. |

Gotta love QS...high risk, high reward.

Not to kick him when he's down, but he only has 2 teams left. I counted 6 w/ Cornell.... let's see if they hold on. |

Sigh for Siena. Well, I guess I'm an ODU and BYU fan the rest of the way...

Does anyone remember who finished in 4th place out of 20 entries in any of these contests, ever? What the fuck is the point in that? Sadly, I really did think about some of the longer-odds teams who did win (ODU and Cornell in particular) but somehow started looking for places where I thought I might get two wins, and might have been lured off the one true path. But really now, what's the difference between 18th and 4th place? |
After the first round:
|
So 4 players with 5 teams left. The biggest potential here is for ntndeacon with several lower seeds winning and still alive. At this point it seems that a Cornell win could pull ntndeacon and myself into a group ahead of everyone else, while a Murray St. win would do the same for Keets 14 and Arles.

Unless I missed something, what's the difference between 1st place and 18th place? :) |
woohoo wtg St. Mary's!

You do this for a clear purpose. To crush yoiur enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women. Do you get that for second place? I think not. Play to win. |

And deacon is running away with it right now..
|
Through 5:20 Sunday:
I think it's unlikely anyone catches Deacon - if Xavier wins today he may have clinched it, or at least clinched for all intents and purposes. For perspective, previous years winners had 83, 89, and 87 points. |
My wife is going to be so pissed she has to lament.
|
deacon is just running away. Xavier wins..
|
I think the only chance for deacon to lose is for all of his teams to flame out next round and Washington to win a couple more games.

No kidding, that is pretty sick. |
