EA Representative Slips At E3 - Reveals 2nd NFL Head Coach Game In Development

In the process of interviewing a representative from EA Tiburon at E3 07 regarding Madden 08, ripten.com caught a slip points to a possible 2nd game in development.

I know the first one sucked, but I am willing to spend my money again on a 2nd game of this nature. I liked all the bells and whistles of the first one. I liked having the ability of watching my players play.

And, I loved the Live Draft in Head Coach.

This space reserved for a Maximum Football joke.

In the process of interviewing a representative from EA Tiburon at this years E3 regarding Madden 08, one of our writers (who is a big Patriot’s fan) jokingly asked if Bill Belichick would again be absent on the sidelines this year.
As the representative began to explain the contractual reasons behind certain coaches being excluded from the game he slipped and mentioned that they are “going through” the same situation with NFL Head Coach.

I immediately said “going through?” He smiled and quickly tried to change the subject. I of course was having none of that and asked whether or not there was another Head Coach game in progress, at which point he politely said that he could not comment. We of course exchanged business cards and followed up with him again shortly after E3 concluded, but his response hadn’t changed. The game may never see daylight, however we know what we heard and stand behind this report.

While the first iteration of Head Coach was greeted with mixed reviews, we feel that the overall concept behind the game is still promising, and if handled properly a second time around, it just might stick. Apparently EA feels the same way, although they just can’t seem to remember mentioning it.

Fool me once. :)

I'll probably drop the $$ for it one more time, pending some additional info and feedback.

I love the GM aspect of HC. It did have its flaws, but hopefully a lot of the major ones will be fixed with HC2. I will buy it.

Exhibit A for why EA will never change their Madden development strategy absent competition.

gstelmack 07-28-2007 01:10 PM

I loved coaching games. I hated how long the offseason was dragged out just to get to games. They tweak how the stages are done to have me playing more games, I'd be all over it a second time.

Barkeep49 07-28-2007 01:20 PM

I never bought HC but I felt it did somethings better than any other GM'ing game. I am willing to sacrifice some complete number realism as long as the gestalt feels real. I don't think last year's HC was particularly fun, hence my non-purchase but would love from them to try and refine the model.

a friend of mine works for EA in Orlando and confirmed it.

MizzouRah 07-28-2007 01:53 PM

*IF* they fix the many issues with the game, it could be great.

Please. Sportdigs had the article two years ago.

Just what I want - another NFL simulation that uses 5 minute quarters.

Yeah, there certainly is potential, but I have very little optimism that will happen.

CU Tiger 07-28-2007 04:06 PM

You know this is sorta like the water powered car.

Great theory!
Load of Potential.
But no substance. :(

Amen!

I wonder who the guinea pig is going to be? :D

red95vette 07-28-2007 08:17 PM

You know I'm going to try to not even get excited about a 2nd head coach. I was OK with all the coaching office stuff and game prep. Lots of people hated that but I actually liked it. But the gameplay was horrendous. All the INTs, horrible play variety (or lack of), 5 min quarters?!?

I felt betrayed after spending many hours in the draft, off season, practice and then finally reaching the games found out "this is how the games play out, yuck."

Nope EA fooled me once, not going to preorder this one. I'll wait until well after release and once if the majority of reviews and gamers give it a thumbs up then MAYBE I'll have a look.

EDIT: Actually EA has lost my trust so much this not only applies to HC2 but to any and all future EA releases. I'm almost ready to write them off for good as a developer I patronize.

Same here.

Sgran 07-30-2007 11:49 AM

I was so excited for the release of Head Coach that I actually called it the "holy grail". Everything I heard about it after the release was so bad that I never even tried it. It was then i decided that EA will never get past the lowest common denominator. The only EA game I've enjoyed since then was Total Club Manager 2004, and that was probably because I don't know much about what real soccer is supposed to be like. Actually I think Jim could learn a few things from TCM (now called Fifa Manager), like pre-contract negotiations regarding the player's role on the team, and seeing things you build, even if it's not the match itself, like your stadium, and your team photo.

Bee 07-30-2007 11:56 AM

Never bought the first one either because of the bad reviews. If the second one gets good reviews, I'll pick it up though. I'm glad they've decided to continue the series just on the outside chance they release something half way decent.
