Is my ITouch trashed?

I have a 8 gb I Touch and I have not been able to turn it on in about a month. I finally got around to look on the web for some answers on what could be wrong and the only thing I found was to reset the Itouch - tried that and still nothing.

I've attached a photo of what the screen looks like. The screen is black with a white Apple logo in the middle of the screen.

Just posting to see if any of you Apple people have come across something like this...

Drake 05-05-2010 02:29 PM

Is it plugged in?

Drake 05-05-2010 02:30 PM

(Don't hit me. You have no idea how often the answer I get to that question is, "Um, I don't know.")

DanGarion 05-05-2010 02:33 PM

You probably will need to do a recovery.

iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore

CleBrownsfan 05-05-2010 04:40 PM

Thanks for that link Dan.

I followed the steps but when still not able to restore the I Touch. I'm able to get to step 4 where it shows me "connect to ITunes" but when I connect me Touch to my computer I get nothing (and I do have and tried 2 usb cables).

Use the following steps to restore your device:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and running before attempting to update.
2. Connect your device to your computer.
3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
4. Select the Summary tab.
5. Select the Restore option.
6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up option (as seen in the image below). If have just backed up the device, it is not necessary to create another.

The bold: When I open ITunes my device isn't showing up.

I wonder if it's worth paying someone to fix it or just replace it...

Odd - I did the following and the screen went all white after about 30 seconds - then went back to the white Apple logo. I continued to hold in the power & home button and it repeated the white screen / back to Apple logo until I let go.

Still doesn't show up as a device in ITunes.

terpkristin 05-05-2010 04:53 PM

How old is it?
Do you have a plug you can plug it into the wall?

Do you have an Apple store nearby?

/tk

k0ruptr 05-05-2010 04:58 PM

try doing it again but this time let go of the power button while continuing to hold down the home button

if that doesnt work, try the opposite, one of them will help im sure of it.

Well, every suggestions you guys make the ITouch does something different. Makes me think it's definitely fixable....

I let go of the power button and held the home button and the screen stays white. I let go of the home button while the power button is held and screen goes back the the white Apple logo.

I did find an Apple store in my area - I plan on heading there tomorrow. Just don't know if they'll help me or not - do Apple stores repair on site or ship the item?

Thank again for your help guys...

bhlloy 05-05-2010 07:38 PM

If they can repair on site they will, otherwise they will give you a replacement while it's being shipped. This is only if it's under warranty - if not I don't know about the replacement bit.

Bought it 2 years ago
No plug in the wall
Going to an Apple store tomorrow

I'll update once they tell me what's up...

I don't know, it's still displaying the Apple logo. According to most Apple fans I know, that's pretty much the main selling point.

when the screen stays white, you have it connected to the computer with Itunes open correct? and it doesn't pop up with anything on the pc screen?

dawgfan 05-05-2010 10:09 PM

I've heard pretty good things about Apple Stores and their "Genius Bar" service. At the very least, they should be able to clarify for you whether standard recovery techniques can fix it or not.

I had a friend who dropped his iPhone a few months after he bought it and it shattered the display glass. He took it to the local Apple Store, and even though he hadn't purchased additional protection to cover accidental damage, they gave him a replacement phone.

MacroGuru 05-05-2010 10:58 PM

Try this...plug it in to your USB and while iTunes is launched...

Hold the Home and Power button down, then let go of the power button and hold the home button down for 10 more seconds. It should send it into DFU mode and allow you to do a restore on the phone, if not...the genius bar is where it is at.

Yeah, I have the ITouch connected to the computer with ITunes open. I also downloaded the latest version of ITunes before plugging in as well. When I do the hold power/home button nothing pops up on the screen. I'm going to as Apple store at 11:00 so hopefully they'll be able to tell me what's up.

That's good to hear...

CleBrownsfan 05-06-2010 02:34 PM

So to answer my initial question: Is my ITouch trashed?

It is... water damage. Looks like I'll be putting it on Ebay as a water damaged ITouch.

Thanks again for your help guys...

Were you using it while soaking the tub?

damn, sorry to hear that :( although if you are looking to replace it, check craigslist or ebay as well, can get some solid deals (if money is an issue)

dawgfan 05-06-2010 04:52 PM

That's a bummer. My dad had a similar issue with his iPod Touch - he spilled a drink on it and when he took it to the Apple Store, they determined it had water damage and couldn't replace for him as that's not covered by the warranty.

Lol - funny you say that. My daughter took my 2 week old cell phone in her bath a few months ago. She wanted to call grandma while taking her bath ;)

I think my ITouch got water damage in my center console when my air freshener leaked on to it. It smells like Vanilla so I'm sure that's what happened. Oh well, I'm sure in time I'll buy one again. I bought to many accessories for it not to have one ;)

CleBrownsfan 05-07-2010 09:30 AM

Craiglist is insane.

I put the broken Touch up on Craiglist for $40 around 8:00 this morning

I got 8 e-mails within a hour - some dude just came to my work and bought it. So two hours after I posted it sold... lol
