Bigger, Faster, Stronger my Eye!

Todays players claim they are so much better than the Players of Yesterday, but check this out.

December arrived and Grange departed Chicago with the Bears to play seven road games in less than two weeks. During that time, his box office magic would be unavailable to Chris O'Brien. The Cardinal owner settled for the next-best choice and scheduled the Maroons for the first Sunday of the month.

That is a game at least everyother Day, and I bet some of those games were back-to-back. And, todays players think they have it rough???

Today's players are still bigger, stronger, and faster

Therefore, they need longer to recover from the more serious injuries that occur during the course of a game...

cuervo72 09-28-2007 06:24 PM

I thought this thread was going to be bionic-related.

JeeberD 09-28-2007 06:25 PM

That was my first thought as well...

M GO BLUE!!! 09-28-2007 06:28 PM

Ditto.

But bigger, stronger and faster does not necessarily equate to better...

It doesn't? The bigger, stronger, and faster team would have make a ton of mistakes in order for the lesser team to keep up.

JeeberD 09-28-2007 06:56 PM

A team of all-stars from today would fucking OBLITERATE an all-star team from the thirties if by the magic of Quantum Leap they somehow met in their prime...

you're talking all-stars...

i think an average team from yesterday could compete with or beat an average team from today.

take rex grossman and put him in the 40's... he still sucks.

oh, and the game would depend on the rules... i believe if the forward pass were illegal, many of today's teams would have difficulty moving the ball! also, the second today's receivers start crying about contact they would get their heads taken off by a guy with no teeth and a nose about three inches to the right from where nature intended.

JeeberD 09-28-2007 07:08 PM

The rules argument is completely valid. But if the pass is allowed, I think any team from today still beats any team from yesteryear. The size difference is insane! An offensive line averaging 300 pounds would be facing a d-line that probably wouldn't be that much above 225. And even worse for the old-timers, the size discrepancy would be just as bad with today's defense against their offense. How would they be able to open up any holes for their backs?

M GO BLUE!!! 09-28-2007 07:19 PM

There were 300 pound players back then... they just weren't athletic enough to play! The Lions had a 300+ pound NT back in the 50's that played in their five man line. He got hurt and they changed to the new 4-3, installing Joe Schmidt at MLB, losing over 100 pounds, but gaining one hell of a football player!

:D

SI

CU Tiger 09-28-2007 11:14 PM

yeah but todays 300 pounders would out run Schmidt and his 200 pound frame

14ers 09-29-2007 04:21 AM

I will put my money on a team from the 40s and 50s, IF the NFL team is comming off a 2 week 7 game roadtrip.:D

Also, What kind of stats did these players put up in a 30 - 50 game season?

Warhammer 09-29-2007 12:11 PM

You have to remember that the players of the 30s and 40s did not make football their life. If they had the same training that these guys did, I would think they would be able to do it.

Well now you're just adding variables.....

No way - he'd be the most dominant player in NFL history. He'd blow their minds. The passing game was very primitive in the 40s.
