Mount Rushmore: sax solos

Another slightly obscure Mt. Rushmore. This one came to me during a random play off of my iTunes list and Pandora listening.

Simple enough, the top 4 saxophone solos you've heard. Any Kenny G picks will lead to me going to your house and kicking you squah in dee nutz. Any Billy Joel I'll leave to QuikSand to deal with.

To start things off, here's mine:

Dire Straits, Your Latest Trick

Gerry Rafferty, Baker Street

Lou Reed, Walk on the Wild Side

The Champs, Tequila

Baker Street is on it's own mountain.

Comedy Billy Joel "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" answer.

Can't think of enough off the top of my head to name four but I will put "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" on the list. (Agree with Baker Street)

kurtism 05-04-2010 07:43 AM

Paul Gonsalves (tenor sax) of the Duke Ellington Orchestra from Diminuendo in Blue/Crescendo in Blue (Newport Jazz Festival, 1956)

Only part of it here (not the Newport performance; Gonsalves comes in around 2 minutes), but it will have to do:

Editing to add in the actual performance, w/o video:

I can't help but wonder if we really need a Mt. Rushmore for sax solos.:p

Antmeister 05-04-2010 10:07 AM

Here's my Mt. Rushmore:

Giant Steps - John Coltrane has a mean sax solo and is a bit old school.
Careless Whispers - Wham! is just an honorable mention. I used to hate this song back when I was in Jr. High School, but as I have gotten older I seem to appreciate the music more than anything else and the sax solo is perfect for this song.

MJ4H 05-04-2010 10:32 AM

In before Kenny G.

What a coincidence...Careless Whispers is *my* vagina's favorite sax solo!

Yep, we do. As a sax player myself, I've always loved "Yakkity Sax" (thanks, thesloppy), and it would have been on my list, but I hadn't heard (or read, as in the second vid) of the Gonsalves solo. Very nice.

Good call on "Baker Street".

Maple Leafs 05-04-2010 03:06 PM

The parody thread for this is going to get somebody banned.

Ksyrup 05-04-2010 03:07 PM

I'm not sure I could name 4 songs with a sax solo in it, much less the best 4. Uhhhhh...Urgent? Something from Huey Lewis?

I played sax in junior high and high school. Hated it. Such a one dimensional, boring instrument.

Karlifornia 05-04-2010 03:14 PM

No "Money"?

Anything by Quarterflash.

Scarecrow 05-04-2010 05:42 PM

Easiest Mt Rushmore EVAR!!!!

1. Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty
2. Turn the Page - Bob Seger
3. Jungleland - Bruce Springsteen
4. Scenes From and Italian Restaurant - Billy Joel

This doesn't really count as a solo I guess, more of a riff, but needs mentioned

Brass Monkey - Beastie Boys

Great Sunday stroll kind of CD where you put it in, roll down the windows, and just drive.

Here's three more

I enjoyed that.

You know. I should be a Springsteen fan, but I just don't get it. That was a great performance...I'm just not invested enough to go all in.

DC and I were talking about that yesterday:

(I definitely recommend "Hihache" on the related songs list)

I was you 2 years ago. Why don't I give it a chance. I will probably like him. I finally went there and he's now my favourite artist.

While "Born in the USA" is within my very small list of truely elite albums if I were to dwindle down my collection from 800-900 to however few, "Nebraska" was the album that really made me feel like I was missing out by not getting into him further. I still need to get some of his earlier stuff, but I'm still around 6 of his albums.

Back on topic.
