The Mandalorian & other Star Wars series

I've only read positives on Mandalorian. It's probably the best series I've watched in recent years and glad s2 (so far) is even better than s1. A good balance of action, writing & funny dialogue, special effects, and personal interaction between Mando and baby Yoda (who has great facial expressions).

Still wondering if/how the Mandalorian eat (probably don't) and drink (have to, right?) in public though.

IMO s2 is better than s1. In s1 there were extras but so far in s2, it's pretty much focused on Mando & baby Yoda. We are seeing more personal interactions between the two and learning more about baby Yoda. Have to re-watch s1 but I think we are seeing more baby Yoda facial expressions which is great.

ep3 pays homage to Pirates of the Caribbean (and again, a little more to last week's Aliens). I like how Disney is doing this.

Fantastic to see Starbuck in a major production vs the el-cheapo Netflix sci-fi specials. Very cool that there is apparently a moderate-vs-radical "the way" angle (Disney writers must be reading FOFC). Very interested in learning more of Starbuck's backstory and seeing that arc progress.

He has said he takes his helmet off when alone, so imagine he eats and washes then. He probably has some internal way to get fluids and nutrients as well, but he does take he helmet off daily.

Izulde 11-14-2020 08:27 AM

I love this series. Best part of my Friday during the season. Agreed it's the best series in years.

Lathum 11-14-2020 08:53 AM

I really is awesome and stays true to the Star Wars universe.

I love baby Yoda eating the eggs. lol..

timmae 11-14-2020 09:26 AM

And the one they hid to save for eating later on! Such a great series!

MizzouRah 11-14-2020 12:33 PM

This series is the only reason I'm paying for Disney channel when our free year ran out. :)

GrantDawg 11-14-2020 01:00 PM

My daughter pays for the sub. So it makes it that much better.

spleen1015 11-14-2020 01:05 PM

Ep 1 this season was good. 2 was kind of meh. 3 was better than 1.

Can't wait to see what's next!

ISiddiqui 11-14-2020 03:12 PM

I thought S2 has been worse than S1. Ep1 and Ep2 did the cardinal sin of boring me. Though I hear that Ep3 was much better. However my free year of Disney+ expired. So I'll probably just wait until the season is over and then just get a month of D+ to watch it.

I thought S2Ep1 was the weakest one yet...and that hurts, because I'm a huge fan of Tim Olyphant. I just felt like the writing was really poor.

Drake 11-14-2020 06:59 PM

Also: Hey Star Wars universe! Stop giving me sentient aliens that just look like Earth animals.

Looking specifically at you, Dr. Mandible and pregnant salamander.

ETA: This is really just a minor gripe I've had ever since the fat blue elephant playing the piano for Jabba the Hutt.

PilotMan 11-14-2020 07:06 PM

Season 2 >>> Season 1

Season 2
Episode 2>Episode 1>Episode 3

But it's really close. Incredible start to this year. It's everything we really wanted.

Izulde 11-14-2020 08:58 PM

I actually thought Episode 3 was the weakest one so far this season. I'd put it Ep 1 > Ep 2 > Ep 3

Edward64 11-14-2020 09:23 PM

Hah. I like them all but grade it Ep 3 > Ep 2 > Ep 1.

this is seriously the most star wars that star wars can get and people hating on season 2 are insane. all 3 episodes have been great.

Honolulu_Blue 11-15-2020 05:14 AM

I love this show and look forward to it every week.

Kodos 11-15-2020 10:46 AM

I’m loving it. Perfect mixture of adventure and humor. Love the Alien references. The jet pack trick was hilarious.

Vince, Pt. II 11-15-2020 11:41 AM

Weird seeing Kara Thrace in the Star Wars universe, but I'm in the "episode 3 was the best so far in season 2 camp."

Slight spoiler:

I am slightly concerned that our hero keeps putting himself in position to be taken advantage of and needing to be bailed out.

thesloppy 11-15-2020 12:57 PM

I have been loving the series so far overall.

I don't like Giancarlo Esposito as the big bad (so far), cuz he's playing practically the same character in 3-4 successive shows I've watched, which isn't very compelling. Similarly I want to like Amy Sedaris' character, but I don't & she pulls me out of the story every time she's on screen.

stevew 11-15-2020 02:27 PM

So far we have the following threads in season 2(continued from season 1)

-Mando trying to find Ahsoka and return the child
-Moff Gideon trying to get the child, and possessing the Darksaber
-Bo Katan trying to get the darksaber back from Moff Gideon, so she can unite the rest of the mandalorians
-Random bounty hunters attempting to collect on Din and the Child
-Boba Fett, surely not going to throw away his shot
-Greef Karga and Cara Dunne, who surely will get in the mix

I doubt all of these threads will conclude this season, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Boba Fett make a power play this year. I doubt that the long term safety of Peli Motto(amy sedaris) can be assured, with Fett around.

Also possible they can use a younger Lor San Tekka at some point in this series(guy that Kylo kills in the beginning of episode 7).

Edward64 11-15-2020 03:51 PM

Wait ... Boba was in an episode?

I have to read more fan episode analysis.

Well, have to see where it leads, but the last shot of episode 1 (IIRC) was the actor who played Jango Fett in the prequels, and Boba Fett was a clone of Jango.

stevew 11-15-2020 05:36 PM

Heavily scarred Temuera Morrison was in the last shot op episode 1. He played Jango. All the clone trooper clones were aged rapidly so it basically has to be Boba. Plus that was Boba’s armor that the lawman was wearing.

Groundhog 11-15-2020 08:09 PM

I have no idea how well known the film Once Were Warriors is outside of NZ and Australia, but the idea that the lead character in that (played by Temuera) ended up being cloned for the Clone Troopers always made me think that they should have conquered the entire galaxy with ease...

MizzouRah 11-15-2020 08:49 PM

I don't understand why he doesn't use his jetpack more. Riding speeder bikes and getting surrounded by enemies, just jetpack out of trouble and use it to get where you need to go. :)

My first thought as well. Well, my second thought. My first thought was what Mizzou said - why the hell doesn't he use that thing more?!?

There's a baby Yoda fan(s) in space.

An adorable — and powerful — stowaway is currently on board SpaceX’s Crew-1 flight, floating freely inside the company’s spacecraft as it heads toward the International Space Station. A plush Baby Yoda — yes, technically The Child — from The Mandalorian can be seen in live shots from inside SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, bobbing about inside the cabin and bumping into the four crew members on the flight.

Am I the only one who doesn't like Jango and Boba Fett?

stevew 11-16-2020 02:00 PM

Boba Fett is just fan service. I doubt they'll kill him in this property, but there's a good reason they're using him.

PilotMan 11-20-2020 09:44 PM

Another very good episode. Really enjoying this season. Such a good feel.

Edward64 11-22-2020 07:10 PM

Agree it was a good episode and appreciate a couple familiar characters from last season.

Great scene with Mando & baby Yoda trying to fix the ship. Baby Yoday swiping the blue macaroons (and later accident). Storm troopers need remedial shooting practice for sure. Saw Mando drink under his mask. Really like how they introduced the lab mystery.

So now we have the trip to Ahsoka Tano, more eventually with Bo-Katan, Moff Gideon & dark saber, and the lab mystery.

MizzouRah 11-23-2020 08:57 PM

The Storm Troopers must not get military training, they just run out into the open without any cover whatsoever.

I watched the Leeds-Arsenal match this weekend with my daughters. Leeds (wearing white) had about a dozen shots in the first half, many of which were great opportunities, but kicked almost all of them them over or around the goal. At some point, my younger daughter looked at me and said, "These guys shoot like storm troopers."

Very proud moment in parenting.

GrantDawg 11-24-2020 10:21 AM

Congrats.

Unfortunately, my college kids couldn't give a flip about Star Wars.

This season of The Mandalorian is kicking arse. This last episode with Ahsoka Tano was amazing and somehow they are masterfully tying in the Prequels, the original trilogy, the Clone Wars and Rebels animated series, as well as tying in things from books and video games. Ultimate fan service TV show. By using all of the previous work as source material, this feels like a lived-in universe.

I just wish I knew more of it. I never watched the Clone Wars or Rebels. In wich order do you watch them?

Edward64 11-27-2020 07:51 PM

Another great episode. Learning more and more about baby Yoda. I like the dueling scenes at the end.

I have removed all the references to the show "The Resistance" as that was basically a kid's show that is canon but adds no value and really has only loose references to the movies. "Forces of Destiny" episodes are just short videos (3 to 5 minutes) that flesh out and actually add value to some of the events surrounding it. All the above is available to watch on Disney Plus.

Yup.

Rosario Dawson is so underrated as an actress. She absolutely nailed Ahsoka Tano. Best episode of the season to this point and arguably the best in the series (though I'd have to rewatch Season 1 before I could say that definitively).

I never found her all that interesting in the various Marvel stuff, but I did think she was really good in this episode.

Drake 11-29-2020 04:40 PM

My only objection to Episode 5 was realizing how old Michael Biehn has gotten. He was one of my Top 5 favorite actors from the mid-80s to mid-90s.

THANK YOU for this list!!! I watched Rogue One last night, which was awesome and now I'm going back over the stuff I have missed out on.

I think I still give the nod to the prison break episode from Season 1, but this one was excellent, and right up there.

Had to look him up ... oh yeah, Hicks (and Paxton) in Aliens. Also as Johnny Ringo vs Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday.

If you haven't watched yesterday's episode of Mando, then what are you waiting for?

It was another highlight reel episode. At one point I said, "this rivals the end scene of Rogue One."

I enjoyed it plus the intro of the new character.

However, I detested the fight scene. It's as if the storm troopers didn't learn the basics of taking cover and trying to out flank ... it was like the charge of the light brigade.

Stormtroopers are gonna Stormtroop. Bad aim, poor tactics, it’s just how they roll.

Vince, Pt. II 12-05-2020 01:43 PM

The last two episodes have been phenomenal.

Antmeister 12-05-2020 04:58 PM

Yeah this last episode was directed by Robert Rodriguez. I thoroughly enjoyed it and this show makes the Star Wars universe much more lived in.

PilotMan 12-11-2020 07:26 PM

Another episode that hit the mark. What more is there to say? It's a top notch show, and probably the best thing on TV in 2020.

Edward64 12-11-2020 07:33 PM

Great show.

This episode had some cool hand-to-hand combat. And first time I've recall seeing imperial troops "die" vs just shot in their armor.

Not sure I get the last scene. Not a great tactical move but provided the dramatic end to the episode.

GrantDawg 12-11-2020 08:40 PM

I agree. Great episode, but the ending. Really?

I've been reading there's going to be a lot of other SW shows coming up. Slightly worried they may overdue it with quantity. But considering the success of Mandalorian, have hopes they will do it well.

The Disney acquisition of the SW franchise and building theme parks were a fantastic bet. Honestly, I thought SW was dying a slow death and Disney has really revived it.

Edward64 12-18-2020 05:30 PM

Pretty good season finale and especially the last 10 min.

Wonder how the dark saber thing will play out. The spear fight (both of them) was pretty cool. The face touching was a good scene. The new person ... have to google on it :)

JonInMiddleGA 12-18-2020 06:06 PM

I'll just say "tornado DDT" and leave it at that.

(cause the only reason I know that was a thing was cause I saw an article)

The ending with the Jedi felt like a callback to the end of Rogue One with Darth Vader annihilating people instead of droids.

Absolutely. We got to experience the old school power of a kick ass jedi the way we were told it was in the original trilogy. We felt like we lost a bit not seeing Luke dominate in RotJ, and we felt like we lost a lot more not seeing him do bigger things in the most recent trilogy. This was that same feeling from Rogue One, the very same and it was glorious.

Loved the whole season. Very very good.

Okay if you are talking about the cantina scene, I will just say that person was in a previous episode so not really new.

As far as the episode was concerned, I believe this capped off what I think is one of the best seasons out of any Star Wars TV series (so basically in comparison to any of the animated series). I thought Season 7 of Clone Wars was going to be hard to beat, but I believe this season of The Mandolorian topped that as a whole. I really, really hope the other Disney Plus Star Wars content will be at this level.

Edward64 12-19-2020 07:37 AM

Had to look up how they did the Jedi. An actor + CGI.

Wife and I were wondering if they had a look-alike.

Swaggs 12-19-2020 12:15 PM

Awesome episode. Up there with some of the best Game of Thrones episodes as far as high quality production and quality.

If anyone missed it, there was a post credits scene. I think we are all going to be drunk with Star Wars and Marvel content over the next few years.

We did miss it, thanks for the heads up.

Missus and I are going to re-watch s2 soon so I can cancel Disney until s3 comes out.

Edward64 12-19-2020 04:23 PM

Okay, now that everyone has had a day to watch it, some additional notes:
  • So we have a crack Mandalorian direct action team but they have no way to communicate with each other once they get on the light cruiser
  • I get the Beskar helmet protected Mando but you'd think he would have a concussion and been incapacitated
  • Cara Dune's gun jamming and she takes it into the lift instead of picking up a weapon (for a just in case) from a downed stormtrooper
  • I liked Luke but didn't like R2D2, IMO that distracted from additional Luke-Mando-Grogu interactions
  • So they just got through an epic battle and it was ho-hum, just hand Grogu to Luke and so long. Com'on, there should have been a big celebration somewhere, a transition period for poor Grogu, everyone downing some cold ones etc.

That was awesome. The moment I realized who must be flying the X-wing was thrilling. “That’s Luke!”

MizzouRah 12-27-2020 11:25 AM

Wow, I just finished the last episode and I have real tears running down my face. Of course happy tears but this one was awesome.

Fantastic season....

Edward64 10-02-2021 10:09 AM

I think she would be great but get the other Star Wars opp may be better for her. Wasn't a big Xena fan but wife was.

Quote:

Lucy Lawless has some thoughts on the fan-driven campaign to take over fired “The Mandalorian” cast member Gina Carano’s role.

Lawless, 53, believes that the campaign is actually hurting her chances of being a part of the “Star Wars” family.
:
:
The “Xena: Warrior Princess” star commented on the fan-led crusade in an interview with British newspaper Metro.

“Well to be honest with you, I was already in discussions about something on — it wasn’t ‘The Mandalorian’ — something Star Wars-affiliated,” Lawless said. “[The fan campaign] might have hurt me in some way, because then [Lucasfilm] couldn’t hire me because it would seem to be pandering to … I’m just guessing here, I don’t know anything.”
:
:
“But that’s the way the world is and they meant it out of love, and I thank the fans for their fealty to me,” Lawless said. “I haven’t thought about that since, so it hasn’t given me any pain, but that was my thought at the time, like, ooh, this makes me look like a political appointment, and not an actress.”

GrantDawg 10-02-2021 10:33 AM

Love Lucy Lawless.

Edward64 12-24-2021 10:10 AM

FWIW, prediction on s3

Quote:

In a recent Twitter post, Phillip Sugarman, who frequently leaks when movie and TV show productions begin, posted an image of a production schedule for the show, indicating that The Mandalorian season 3 began filming on September 20, and would continue through March 22, 2022. If that’s accurate, we can expect to see season 3 debut sometime in the fall of 2022.

Edward64 02-03-2022 05:52 AM

Another solid episode on Boba this week. Not a lot of action but the "training" was fantastic.

miked 02-03-2022 07:44 AM

Except the last 2 episodes did not have Boba Fett. Maybe they should rename it to the short story of Boba Fett and friends.

stevew 02-03-2022 10:56 AM

last couple episodes without the old guy holding his helmet have been great.

Also Cad Bane=Awesome

Hopefully they break out Rengar, Bossk and all the other bounty hunters from Vader's ship in ESB(assuming they aren't dead).

Kodos 02-03-2022 05:58 PM

Agreed. The last two episodes have been great.

thesloppy 02-03-2022 06:24 PM

I had managed to completely destroy any interest I had in this show after the first 3 or 4 episodes of this show, but you bastards are going to pull me back in!

spleen1015 02-05-2022 04:47 AM

Makes we want to watch the Clone Wars show to see more Cad Bane. If only Anakin was bearable.

stevew 02-05-2022 10:26 AM

there's a good bad batch episode with both Cad Bane and a super young Fennec Shand

Edward64 02-11-2022 06:53 AM

Season finale was okay but not as good as previous 2 episodes.

Last scene was fun.

Edward64 03-02-2023 11:40 AM

Mandalorian new season is out.

Prob going to wait until more episodes are out before renewing Disney+.

But then again, wife may not want to wait that long.

stevew 03-02-2023 01:10 PM

Bad Batch is a good watch. Tales of the Jedi was as well.

Edward64 03-22-2023 08:49 AM

Caught up on s3 episodes.

3.1 and 3.2 were fun.

3.3 was WTF.

I don't mind a tangent, it was interesting on the amnesty and the characters. But the amount of time spent on it seem unnecessary, should have Din & Grogu interspersed in there vs beginning/end. We'll see how this plays out

I just caught up, too. They've done this type of thing before, where there is a tangental storyline. I was just assuming that the character that did the backstabbing is still working for Moff Gideon and his escaping imprisonment will be a storyline going forward? I would think we will see Mando and MG mix it up again before the end of this season.

Mota 03-22-2023 10:23 AM

My wife hated it. I would consider her to be a "casual" type of viewer. She loves Grogu, and so an exceptionally long detour away from that was annoying. I appreciate the lore a bit more, but this could have been told in smaller chunks over a few episodes and been less intrusive.

Edward64 03-23-2023 07:20 AM

3.4 was okay, happy to pivot back to the Mandalorian.

I like the jetpacks but think they are overdid it in 3.4. The flying special effects seem awkward (?). They looked hokey and was distracting for me.

Liked the additional backstory to Grogu. And hope we see the new foundlings more.

Mota 03-23-2023 09:55 AM

Yeah, it was cool to see a tiny bit of Order 66 unfold in live action, we've only seen it in animated form previously.

stevew 03-24-2023 10:28 PM

The new Mandalorian planet…..sucks

There’s a great Clone Wars episode that’s set when Ashouka is on a starship right as order 66 happens. Worth searching out. Might be the finale.

Kodos 03-25-2023 07:16 AM

This is pretty cool:
