I guess I was wrong about learning something from the previous draft.

:sigh:

Edit: Unless I'm misreading this. Are you saying once a country is picked by anyone, it is eliminated?

lordscarlet 05-12-2009 10:22 AM

To keep complaints down, I'll sit this one out. :)

No, the limitation is only for each participant. So with 12 participants, that means 24 people from one country could potentially be picked.

No restirctions at all. It'll be up to you to make your case to the voters.

If you want to make Bush a scientist or Clinton an athlete, then by all means go ahead.

I mean, I'm open to suggestions. That's not a hard coded rule. I just wanted to add something in there to encourage variety of selections.

larrymcg421 05-12-2009 10:29 AM

For instance, if we needed to increase that to 4 per country, or say half the picks have to be pre-20th century and half post-20th century. Give me your ideas.

wade moore 05-12-2009 10:31 AM

FWIW - My thought is that the draft is too wide open, not too restrictive. I would eliminate a country if he's picked. Or, if you're worried about limiting TOO much, then I would say two times in the entire draft a country can be picked.

Or like you said limit on time periods. Something. To me part of what these drafts were built on were interesting restrictions that make it hard to come up with picks in the later rounds, rather than picking things that could have been good picks in round 2 (like the movie draft).

larrymcg421 05-12-2009 10:36 AM

Okay, how about one per country per category? So if someone picks Lincoln as ruler, then no one else could pick another American in that category, but they could still pick say, Babe Ruth, as athlete.

Noop 05-12-2009 10:37 AM

I want in.

DaddyTorgo 05-12-2009 10:38 AM

increase it to 4 per country in the entire draft and say half of a players picks have to be pre 1850!

DaddyTorgo 05-12-2009 10:39 AM

that's a nice twist. combine that with the time-periods restriction?

Barkeep49 05-12-2009 10:40 AM

I'll gladly play.

larrymcg421 05-12-2009 10:47 AM

Okay, I added the new suggested restrictions in the first post.

DaddyTorgo 05-12-2009 10:56 AM

AENeuman 05-12-2009 11:43 AM

Great idea. I was thinking something like this would make a fun draft.

Some random thoughts:

How do you count a person who is born in one country but did their thing in another?

How are older regions/kingdoms/empires going to count?

i know this is a people driven draft, but how about adding some geography? maybe a natural beauty and a man made icon.

Lathum 05-12-2009 11:44 AM

The Moore brothers fuck up these drafts like its nobody's business. :)

Apathetic Lurker 05-12-2009 11:58 AM

That's a good question. My initial thought is that when the pick is made, then you have to declare a modern country that the pick is being used for, and it should be a country that was part of (or located in) whatever empire the person did their thing in.

And it could be up to the voters to judge if a person was picked for the right country, as long as the person does have some connection to the country. For example, we had the history draft and Joe Louis was picked for the 60s or something like that. I wouldn't forbid such a pick, but leave it up to the voters to do the punishment.

:(..

The bad thing is I feel like I'm really trying to make a "better draft" with the input I put in (not just this here, but in all drafts)..

It was pretty disappointing to me when I realized a lot of people seem to feel the way you do.

dude - i think you missed his smiley. he's been in a very sarcastic mood lately.

i for one think any input into the structure of a draft is better than letting it devolve into chaos

Lathum 05-12-2009 12:30 PM

Yeah, apparently the smiley was missed.

I could care less about your guys input.

Galaril 05-12-2009 12:38 PM

Add me in. Sounds fun.

I DON"T CARE ABOUT YOU EITHER! ;)

Yeah, shouldn't have triggered on your post. This is more based on some posts in the last couple of draft threads than anything here.

ntndeacon 05-12-2009 12:52 PM

I want in as well

Abe Sargent 05-12-2009 12:56 PM

I'd be wiling to play

larrymcg421 05-12-2009 01:13 PM

Need three more...

DaddyTorgo 05-12-2009 01:16 PM

based on a convo i just had with wade, i/we have got the next draft idea basically all set and ready to go

Genius idea by DT, I just helped setup the categories.

DaddyTorgo 05-12-2009 01:53 PM

hey - i wanted to be sure it'd work well as a draft so i figured take it to you - and it's always good to bounce categories off someone else - we each had some good ones

Surtt 05-12-2009 01:54 PM

I'll give it a shot.

Izulde 05-12-2009 01:56 PM

If there's still room I'll hop in.

Coffee Warlord 05-12-2009 01:59 PM

I'll give it a shot. Never actually done one of these, always been in the peanut gallery.

larrymcg421 05-12-2009 01:59 PM

We're all full now.

I'll come up with the draft order in a second.

Surtt 05-12-2009 02:05 PM

What if a country does not exist anymore?

e.g. Prussia or the Holy Roman Empire

larrymcg421 05-12-2009 02:08 PM

1. Apathetic Lurker
2. surtt
3. Abe Sargent
4. Barkeep49
5. Noop
6. Izulde
7. Coffee Warlord
8. DaddyTorgo
9. ntndeacon
10. Danny
11. Galaril
12. Lathum

We'll be doing snake draft like usual, so Lathum will start the second round.

When making picks, please also denote the category, country and whether it is pre-20th century or post-20th century.

Example - Glen "Big Baby" Davis, Army Chief, United States, Post-20th Century

Lathum 05-12-2009 02:08 PM

I always get shafted in the draft order of these things

You declare the modern country that it would qualify for. If an empire covers more than one country, you have to pick one of the countries.

Coffee Warlord 05-12-2009 02:09 PM

And to clarify further, I understand the 1 country / category rule, BUT, can a single player use the same country twice?

larrymcg421 05-12-2009 02:12 PM

Yes, you could theoretically end up with 12 people from the same country, although it's highly unlikely.

Apathetic Lurker 05-12-2009 02:29 PM

Sun Tzu Chinese...pre 2oth century ...Army Chief

Coffee Warlord 05-12-2009 02:30 PM

Not a bad pick.

Surtt 05-12-2009 02:30 PM

1.2 Julius Cesar, Leader/Ruler, Italy, pre-20th

Lathum 05-12-2009 02:32 PM

just a heads up you guys should bold your picks with round and number, makes it easier to follow and know when you are up.

so for example

1.1-Sun Tzu Chinese...pre 2oth century ...Army Chief

1.2-Julius Cesar, Leader/Ruler, Italy, pre-20th

Noop 05-12-2009 02:33 PM

The second restriction is a kick in the nuts.

Larry, can you edit the draft order into the first post?

thanks

Izulde 05-12-2009 02:50 PM

Loving the first pick. I do think Julius Caesar is a bit overrated, though.

Abe Sargent 05-12-2009 02:50 PM

1.3 Alexander the Great, Army Chief, Greece, pre-20th

Izulde 05-12-2009 02:50 PM

Love Alexander the Great. :D

larrymcg421 05-12-2009 02:52 PM

Added picks (and draft order) in the first post. I'll also add a breakdown by category so people will know what countries have been picked in each one.

Abe Sargent 05-12-2009 02:54 PM

thanks larry

It is interesting seeing which people choose military leaders first and or as there rulers as opposed to those who choose non-military leaders first or as their leaders.

Galaril 05-12-2009 03:29 PM

next:)

Izulde 05-12-2009 03:32 PM

I PM'ed Barkeep to let him know it's his turn. :)

Noop 05-12-2009 03:38 PM

I feel like Barkeep is going to take my pick.

Abe Sargent 05-12-2009 03:38 PM

Heya BK

DaddyTorgo 05-12-2009 03:40 PM

I presume we won't make it to 1.8 before I get home and have a chance to get online in like 2 hours.

It's always nice to send in a list just in case. Sometimes a potential run can be missed by someone being gone for 45 minutes. If you know your top 2 or 3 for sure, no harm in sending it to larry. If you really need to see what other people pick, then I guess it's harder to justify.

DaddyTorgo 05-12-2009 03:55 PM

i have no idea what i'm going to pick yet. i haven't even started to think about making a list of my top overall, let alone by category - i just said i was in earlier today...didn't know that we were going to get things going in the middle of the day

Barkeep49 05-12-2009 03:56 PM

Adam Smith Economist Great Britain Pre-20th

Your average person could name 3 economists, if they're lucky. Odds are Adam Smith, who kind of defined the academic theory of the field, would be one of them.

Barkeep49 05-12-2009 03:56 PM

I apologize for the hold-up, but when I had looked last there weren't many sign-ups.

Coffee Warlord 05-12-2009 03:57 PM

And everyone's economic pick vanishes.

DaddyTorgo 05-12-2009 03:58 PM

oooh BK with the sneaky pick

Izulde 05-12-2009 04:00 PM

Brilliant pick BK. :)

Don't you fuck me, Izulde and Noop. :P

Noop 05-12-2009 04:01 PM

Give me a sec

DaddyTorgo 05-12-2009 04:02 PM

ok - i just sent my top-pick to larry (well top pick and then a backup). if they're BOTH gone then you'll just have to wait

Noop 05-12-2009 04:03 PM

1.5 -Oil Fields of Saudi Arabia, Geographical Location, Saudi Arabia Pre-20th Century

The war machine must have oil.

Izulde 05-12-2009 04:03 PM

Posting my top pick now. Let me write it up.

It's a risky pick. More then likely will cost me in the eyes of the voters.

Abe Sargent 05-12-2009 04:06 PM

I was actually thinking of drafting a Pirate themed nation with Henry Morgan and the Sargasso Sea and Blackbeard and such. It would have been funny, but porbably not in the spirit of the draft.

Izulde 05-12-2009 04:07 PM

1.6 Manfred "The Red Baron" von Richthofen - Air Marshal - Germany - 20th Century

Is there any greater or more well-known fighter pilot in the history of the world than The Red Baron? Certainly the best in World War I, with a confirmed 80 victories during the campaign and he showed leadership ability by commanding the famous Flying Circus. So masterful an air warrior, he was even highly respected and admired by the opposing Allies.

You know what I had him as a pick but I figured I was safe with that until the third round at least because leaders were in vogue. Good pick.

Damn, I had him in my list too. BUT...
