I waited on another football player tonight

You may remember that a few weeks ago I waited on Ron Stone, OG for the San Fran Fag... err, Niners. Well, tonight another pro football player came into Olive Garden. This time it was Dat Nguyen of my beloved Cowboys. He came in with his wife (who I recognized from Hard Knocks) and I guess either his little brother and sister or his neice and nephew. The man ate a ton of salad, more than just about anyone I've seen there. He changed his order three times on me (after the order had been sent to the kitchen), and sucked down his water like there was no tomorrow. He seemed like a nice guy, and his wife was very friendly. Hmm, nothing else very exciting to report about this...

bbor 03-13-2003 12:12 AM

Can you get them to bring Olive Garden back to Canada please...i love that place...the tour of Italy rawks.

Marmel 03-13-2003 12:16 AM

bbor, you guys must have some BAD food up in Canada if you are asking for Olive Garden. That place tastes like frozen dinners. You can call them Italian food, but really it sucks.

bbor 03-13-2003 12:17 AM

I just like Lasagna...but it's a pain in the ass to make.:)

Easy Mac 03-13-2003 12:18 AM

Overpriced, overrated, and over shitty. I have had a $25 gift card there for over 3 months and have yet to use it.

bbor 03-13-2003 12:18 AM

DOLA...all you can eat salad and bread sticks rawk also

JeeberD 03-13-2003 12:20 AM

It's not too bad, Marm. Personally, there are a few Ma and Pop Italian restaurants in the are that I prefer to take my girlfriend to. OG certainly isn't the greatest, but it's not bad. Man, I almost busted out laughing at school yesterday when I overheard a girl sitting behind me telling her friend about how her mom was so overwhelmed when her husband took her to OG for V-Day. I feel sorry for that woman if the highlight of her year is eating at OG...

vex 03-13-2003 12:29 AM

I love the Olive Garden.

Swaggs 03-13-2003 12:38 AM

I like the Olive Garden. Anyone eaten at the Macaroni Grille? I got hooked on it when I lived up in Akron. Good stuff. :)

JeeberD 03-13-2003 12:43 AM

Never eaten at Mac Grill. But Johnny Carino's has some bad-ass stuffed mushrooms...

Logan 03-13-2003 12:57 AM

How was the tip?

JeeberD 03-13-2003 01:10 AM

Decent for a normal person, but disappointing for a millionaire football player. Their check was about $30 and they left me nbearly six. His wife was the one who signed the credit card slip.

Larry Allen is still my pro football player tipping champ with his thirty dollar tip on a seventy dollar check...

AgPete 03-13-2003 01:13 AM

I love the Olive Garden's side orders. :D I'm addicted to their salad dressing, breadsticks with alfredo, soups, desserts and other compliments. Their main dishes....well...I get the feeling I could make something comparable to most of them. I have the same question as Logan, what kind of tip did Dat leave? I worked with one of his cousins before, she was a nice (and very smart!) lady. I wish the Wrecking Crew still had players like Dat.

Travis 03-13-2003 01:40 AM

We still have Olive Garden in Edmonton, a couple actually, not bad food for the price.

So because people have more money, you feel they're obligated to give you a ridiculous tip?

Blackadar 03-13-2003 07:18 AM

Mac Grill. Yummmmmmmmmm.

Ksyrup 03-13-2003 07:55 AM

I like Olive Garden a little, but mostly for the all you can eat soup and salad lunches. Mac Grille is fantastic, but nothing beats Carrabba's. If you haven't had it, you're missing something special.

Of course, while I'm on Atkins, I've stayed far away from all three. I could find a meal without pasta at Carrabba's, but watching everyone eat their great bread would kill me.

Bee 03-13-2003 08:00 AM

I always looked at the Olive Garden as one step above McDonalds. I guess Dat Nguyen is playing for the league minimum now? ;)

Radii 03-13-2003 08:57 AM

Hell yeah, damn good stuff there.

Although I like Bambinelli's (mom & pop place in Northlake), too - nothing like eating Italian with some guy in the corner playing random music on a piano.

sweet, I've never heard of that, I'll have to look it up :)

cincyreds 03-13-2003 10:59 AM

Easy Mac can I please have your $25 gift card?

Anrhydeddu 03-13-2003 11:13 AM

Believe it or not, my wife and I ranks Macaroni Grill as one of the best restaraunts we've been to in the country.

Bee 03-13-2003 11:23 AM

You guys really need to get out more. ;)

Yes! I agree completely. Ipps is a great place. I've had many lunches there. Probably too many.

There is also a place near where I live called Italian Oven. Food is pretty good, service is GREAT, and the prices are pretty good too.

bbor 03-13-2003 12:53 PM

Kill this thread...it makes me hungry:)

Well, I help pay his salary by paying ridiculous amounts of money for tickets to his games, so why can't he return the favor? ;)

sabotai 03-13-2003 01:41 PM

I like the Olive Garden too. It's one of the places me and my girlfriend go one those 'special holidays'. But that's only because we are both poor. If we were older and had money, we'd be going to other places on those holidays.

But for a regualr dinner, I like it. Good stuff. The Tour of Italy is what I usually order.

JeeberD 03-13-2003 01:43 PM

Ya'll need to try the Chicken Marsala. It's soooo good, my favorite thing on the menu...

There was an Italian Oven outside of Baltimore (Severna Park), that was great, but it turned into a steak place. We have one in a local mall where I live now, and it's not as good. Well, the food might be, but the service was extremely slow not once but twice, so we haven't been back (when you have kids 3 and under, you can't afford to wait very long for your food).

I can't wait 'till they finish the Macaroni Grill near us. I like Olive Garden ok (though their prices keep going up and up - 7.25 for a lunch portion of Chicken Giardino??), but I love the Macaroni Grill. Knowing they were building one by us was enough for me to abandon the Atkins Diet (ok, after only 2 weeks). I could eat their bread and olive oil alone all day.

JeeberD 09-08-2004 09:59 AM

Waited on Richie Anderson and his family last night. Nice people.

Bradie James has also been in the restaurant a few times over the past few months, but I haven't waited on him personally...

Logan 09-08-2004 10:08 AM

It completely fucks with my head when someone brings back an old thread and I don't realize it. Especially when I'm scrolling through quickly and see something like:

Happened to me too. Until I read my post, I was about to post what I posted a year and a half ago.

Dutch 09-08-2004 10:55 AM

I love Olive Garden, they have a professionally trained staff of cork soakers that are just out of this world. It really helps the flavor of the white's. But I know, I know, most people prefer a good red while enjoying Olive Garden, and they have expert cork soakers for that too.

tategter 09-08-2004 11:39 AM

My wife and I love Mac Grill and have been tortured by their local commercials even though they don't have a restaurant anywhere near here. When we go on vacation we always try to stop where we find one. Heard a rumor that they might be opening one in town in the next few months. Can't wait.

Jeeb, do you work across the street from a stadium or something?

Draft Dodger 09-08-2004 11:50 AM

I sold a computer to Dat Nguyen a couple weeks ago.

except, not THAT Dat Nguyen

spleen1015 09-08-2004 11:52 AM

I dated a girl that went to Texas A&M while Dat was playing there. I met him at a party. Nice guy.

Nah, but the restaurant is in a nice, central part of the DFW area. It's also not too far from the Cowboys facilities in Valley Ranch...

bbor 09-08-2004 12:20 PM

Damn....you dragged this old thread up from the bowels of hell eh?

I'll take Macaroni Grille or Carabbas over Olive Garden any day of the week.

Dutch 04-27-2005 10:57 PM

Hey, we just got a Macaroni Grill in Shreveport, I think I'll have to check that out.

st.cronin 04-27-2005 10:58 PM

I briefly had a bartending gig in Milwaukee, got to serve quite a few NBAers. Dikembe Mutombo is the tallest motherfucker you can imagine. Tracy McGrady likes to drink. Toni Kukoc, I think, is always in agonizing pain. Always.

Dammit Cap, why didn't you tell me it was you?!?! I met my first FOFCer and didn't even realize it... :(

Oh, and by the way, Cap, nice catch...

Cap Ologist 04-27-2005 11:06 PM

Thanks. I just couldn't figure out how to explain to her how I knew who you were without knowing you. The crazy world of text sims is so strange to outsiders!

Ragone 04-27-2005 11:11 PM

i'm still curious how cap knew who you were.. i have a photographic memory and i don't think i could remember what you looked like :)

So Either

A. Jeeberd has a name tag that says "Jeeberd"

or

B. Cap Ologist is a stalker :)

So did you request my section, Cap, or did you just happen to get sat there?

So your wife doesn't know about the wonderful world of FOFC, eh? Man, the first thing I told my girlfriend when I got home from work was that I waited on one of the guys from the board... ;)

JeeberD 04-28-2005 11:11 AM

Wacky...

We really need to have a DFW FOFC get together some time. BBQ, beer, poker, and text sims...talk about a party!

Not really. The service is pretty crappy, even for someone as tolerant as me. They have good happy hour discounts but I don't eat the food there. The big plus is they have TV's there. Lots and Lots of TV's.

JeeberD 04-28-2005 11:20 AM

Have you tried TJ Hartford's yet? Talk about television! I don't think you could avoid watching one even if you tried. They even have the cute little ones mounted over the urinals...

Plus they have some decent drink specials on weeknights.

No, where is that? BTW. The TV part was pointing out the fact the OG doesn't have a tv.

JeeberD 04-28-2005 11:51 AM

It's over by Hooters and On the Border...on the access road a mile or two north of 35 from the OG.

Trust me, I wish we had a TV. Apparently there used to be one in the bar years and years ago, but now corporate doesn't want them in there. Bastards...

That’s really stupid. I would go eat there a lot more if I could watch a game. I understand they aren’t going for the “bar” crowd, but I think they are probably loosing a lot of business by people going elsewhere.

I'd try to make it up for that. I'd also open up my place for a party, but I'm not sure how many would make the drive down to Austin. I have plenty of space to put people, if they don't mind air mattresses and/or Aero Beds. :)

GoldenEagle 04-28-2005 02:05 PM

So is Cap Ologist a good tipper? :)

cartman 04-28-2005 02:09 PM

Woot!

I'm serious about this. If we get enough interest, we can plan on a party sometime this summer. I've got a big ole BBQ pit, and the Salt Lick BBQ is only a couple of miles away. I've got two spare bedrooms, plus tons of floor space, and a huge yard for tents. There's all sorts of stuff on site, tubing on the Guadalupe is close by, there are several vineyards in the area, lots of stuff to keep people occupied.

Lathum 04-28-2005 02:20 PM

I'm down as long as I am in town

Lathum 04-28-2005 03:01 PM

Can I bring a date?

Cap Ologist 04-28-2005 05:27 PM

They just randomly seated us there. The wife knows about FOFC, but she still doesn't quite understand why a bunch of random people talk about everything over the internet. She always gets this bemused look on her face whenever I mention something going on at FOFC. And she still thinks I'm weird for watching the NFL draft, so I thought I'd pass on telling her that I kind of know our waiter but not really.

Taco 04-29-2005 07:47 AM

Jeebs, are there any unique spices that Olive Garden uses? I've eaten there twice and had two allergic reactions to the food...never happened to me anywhere else. I'd like to know what causes it.

JeeberD 04-29-2005 09:12 AM

Not as far as I know, Taco...

Ragone 04-29-2005 09:15 AM

i imagine its either the pesto.. or something in the tomato sauce (probably some kind of preservitive)

JeeberD 04-29-2005 09:25 AM

Well, we use pesto in only one dish. As for the tomato sauce, I have no clue...

JeeberD 09-29-2008 11:41 PM

Not a football player today, but freakin' Thomas Haden Church came in to the Denton OG today. I was playing manager today, and I was walking out of the dining room towards the lobby when I saw this guy dressed in a cowboy hat, cowboy boots, a plaid shirt, and shoulder length hair walking towards me. I thought to myself, "Man, that guy looks like Lowell Mather." And the closer he got, the more I thought that he really did. And then I heard the voice, and I was convinced...

I've known for a while now that he's a Texas boy, but I had no idea he was from this area. Apparently his parents are from the area, and are regulars at the OG (one of the servers always waits on them, but had no idea who their son is).

Good times...

JeeberD 09-30-2008 01:13 AM

You know, I never actually went by his table. He asked to be sat somewhere kind of out of the way (and I can't blame him), so the host put him in a closed section...and someone VERY quickly volunteered to pick him up. So I have no idea what he ate/drank, though a glass of Ecco Merlot would have been very appropriate...
