I've tried something similar with a briefcase lock, although it only went up to 9999. My best friend knew his stepfather had put his xmas present inside a locked briefcase, so we each took a side and one worked down from 9999 and the other from 0000. Probably depends on the person, but if I tighten up my jaw my upper teeth would fall below pretty easily, so its pretty common I would guess, giant frickin hole or not.

On the padlocks, with the cheap ones they had back in my school days you could almost feel the click, and they had a pretty generous range on the numbers anyway (you could slip a bit past and still have it count). Without even pulling on the bar I could probably open any in the whole school in a few tries. I should have become a catburgular/safecracker... useless high school guidance counselors.
