Re: abrupt player retirements.

Do they happen? I had a striker, John Hartson, who was a fabulous player for my West Bromwich side in the Championship, but increasingly got isolated as we got better strikers in the Premiership.

He never indicated that he was thinking about retiring, but suddenly, in the second match of the 2010-11 season, following our EPL championship, I'm noticing that he's not in the squad. He doesn't come up in a search, and when I look at friendly matches from last season, he's unselectable (i.e. can't see his stats etc).

What happened here? Any idea?

Well usually, in previous versions, you would get a notice when someone was planning on retiring and he'd have a RET indicator next to his name. But based on the fact you can't find him in the dB search, I'm guessing he must have retired. Sounds more like a bug though.

SackAttack 11-17-2006 07:13 PM

Well what's weird is I never even got an indication he was considering it. No opportunity to talk him out of it.

He just made like Mark McGwire and disappeared.

SirFozzie 11-21-2006 05:30 PM

Aieeee... rough decision here.

I took over Tottenham (Spurs) to start, and I've done pretty good by them. Won the League Cup in my 2nd year, got to the Quarter Finals of the UEFA Cup, and finished fourth in the EPL (qualifying for the Champions League)

Now, the next year, we just made the final 8 of the Champions League on away goals, after a 3-3 aggregate draw against Bayern Munich, are a distant fifth in the EPL (five points out of 4th, with a game in hand), and Liverpool comes knocking at my door.

They're 11th in the EPL, so no Europe next year, but have a good staff. They want me to manage, are offering at least 44.5 Million UK Pounds (something on the line of $75 Million) in transfer money (although I wouldn't get it till next year), the wage budget is at 700K/week (and I have room to expand it)

Gahhh..

Interesting. I'm @ Pool now. I have a 51 mil (pounds) wage budget - but only an 8 mil (pounds) transfer budget.

Toddzilla 11-21-2006 06:04 PM

Bah. I manage Peterhead in the Scottish 3rd Division.

10K Euro Xfer budget.
2K/wk Euro wage budget.

Sack up, Alice...

SirFozzie 11-21-2006 06:05 PM

heheh

Can you blame me if I'm such a better manager then you? *ducks*

I decided not to take it, I couldn't take not being in Europe next year

I guess I could always take an ultimatum to them, but considering how this season wenty down, I shouldn't.

I was in first place in the Premiership from about the 6th game to the 34th (though when Chelsea would get a game or two up they'd pass me).

The difference was two losses to Chelsea - both blowouts (0-5, 0-2). They beat me by 6 points.

2nd place in the Premiership
Won the League Cup
Lost in the Quarters of the Champs League to FC Bayern - I won the first leg (at home) 3-1, and they beat me 0-2 @ Bayern with a goal in the 84th minute.
Lost in the 3rd Round of the FA to Charlton.

I'm having problems deciding where I want to strengthen the team.

Third year at Gravesend. Haven't had a transfer budget yet. Bastards.

Easy . . . you do what any sensible person would and flee from WHL as quickly as possible! :D

daedalus 11-22-2006 09:43 AM

What am I saying? You're from MA. And you like trees. And pain.

You made the appropriate decision . . . for one such as yourself. :D

SirFozzie 11-22-2006 10:00 AM

you do know what the only possible reply is, right?

I KEEL YOU NOW!

((a week after Liverpool tried to hire me, Bayern Munich wanted me to come to Germany.. there was a little less angst about saying no this time)

BTW - they gave me 32 mil this off-season. I brought on Downing and now Riise wants to go to Spain, so I need a DL. Ugh.

MikeVick7 11-22-2006 05:58 PM

This has probably been mentioned many times in this thread, but I just can't get over how fast the simming is in this game. I'm so used to hitting the space bar and then turning my head to watch the TV for like 3-5 mins. I still do that out of habit now and when I turn back to the monitor after like 10 secs it's already done. Easily the best improvement.

Try and get Gareth Bale if you're early enough in the game to get him cheap.

That kid has been fantastic for me at WBA.

SackAttack 11-22-2006 08:54 PM

Dola,

I don't think he starts there. I think I bought him after I had to sell Curtis Davies to a Spanish side.

DaddyTorgo 11-23-2006 02:15 PM

VERY strange happening (i suppose)

Still just mucking about as Chelski waiting for the patch to start my serious career and I'm trying to buy Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid. His current contract had like ~3 years or so left on it (whatever it was at the beginning of the game). I put in numerous offers for him, including one for 53 million dollars but they're all rejected and he has a 120 million dollar release clause. Lo and behold after the 53 million dollar offer is rejected he signs a new 5 year deal with a 52 million dollar release clause.

Coincidence?

MikeVick7 11-23-2006 06:44 PM

Is there a known issue/bug with training? I have created some schedules for my conf team and then set them all to a medium workload. Then I'll sim ahead and when I go back to the schedule screen, some of the schedule's workloads will jump up to heavy or very heavy. Has this been talked about in the thread already?

MikeVick7 11-23-2006 07:22 PM

Dola - Ok, things seem to have righted themselves for now.

What I was doing was adjusting the slider for each category and then using the workload slider to scale the workload to the level I wanted overall. But, it seems if I go adjust one of the individual category sliders (ie, strength) the workload seems to have stabilized. Still annoying and something I've never experienced in past versions. Hope that made sense.

aran 11-23-2006 08:48 PM

Once again, FM is so immense I find it hard to get started.

SackAttack 11-24-2006 12:44 AM

I'm not sure if this is a bug report or not.

As West Brom, we won EPL last season and lead it this season (2009/10). The record book still says our highest position in EPL is 1st in the 1919/20 season. Seems like that's something that would default to the most recent season if '1st' is the highest position.

Also, I've got a 'biggest defeat' of 10-3 in 1937, and yet the highest scoring game listed is a 5-2 win over ManU. In this case, it might be splitting hairs with records at different divisions.

Was the 5-2 game in your career or a real game? I think that record might only take into account games from the actual game you're playing, not from historical records.

As for the other matter, while I think they use it interchangeably (meaning your point still stands), technically the EPL has only been around since, I believe, 1992. But I doubt that's the issue--sounds more like a bug.

SackAttack 11-24-2006 10:02 AM

The 5-2 game was from my career. The other obviously wasn't, being from 1937. ;)

AlexB 11-25-2006 01:02 AM

Highest league positions to me would only update once you beat the previous high, and given that you can never beat 1st, it will never update.

From an English perspective that's how I would expect it to work.

rexallllsc 11-25-2006 05:14 PM

I got this guy Ryan Taylor in 06-07 (I'm now in 07-08) from Wigan for £6.75 as a replacement for the aging Steve Finnan.

Since then, he's broken his leg (7 months), fractured his skull (3 months), and now about 10 minutes into the 10th match of the season, he broke his leg again (out for an estimated 5 months).

HA.

SackAttack 11-25-2006 07:40 PM

But at least you paid less than 7 pounds, right?

DaddyTorgo 11-25-2006 07:50 PM

I WANT MY PATCH!!!!!

DaddyTorgo 11-26-2006 07:11 PM

just found something new and sweet...the concept of "parity wage" with 2 players at the same club

well i went to renegotiate joe cole's contract and down below in the area where you usually see your ass man's recommendation i saw in addition this line of type:

and now Essien has a "slt" unhappiness saying he wants a contract matching cole's

SackAttack 11-26-2006 09:18 PM

Yep, I ran into that with Charles N'Zogbia and Bobby Convey.

SackAttack 11-27-2006 12:12 AM

Just had a retarded loan offer thing with Barnsley.

They asked to loan one of my strikers - who wasn't in my plans - and offered to pay 40% of his salary. I said 'Sure, also you guys can have the right to buy him for $1.5m (half price) at any time during the loan.'

They changed their mind.

Why the heck would they do that? It's not as though it were an obligation to make the purchase.

Desnudo 11-27-2006 12:57 AM

In a Euro Cup match Litex had 5 players sent off against my Portsmouth team, leaving them with 6. Aren't you required to have at least 7 players on the field or is that just a Sunday league rule?

Pumpy Tudors 11-27-2006 07:55 AM

i waiting for patch before start new career :)

Yes, that's a rule.

It seems they need to tone down the sending offs a bit. My team wasn't particularly dirty, didn't play with hard tackling turned on, but still had 20 players sent off in a single season. 18 games with one player sent off and 1 game with 2.

There are far too many "kicks out at an opponent" type sending offs, the majority of my teams were from a straight red card for violent conduct rather than a professional foul or two bookings. My opponents had a good number too.

Patch 7.0.1 for FM has been released. WWSM owners begin another wait.

Woot finally!!

Pumpy Tudors 11-30-2006 10:27 AM

I wonder if the boxed/digital download patches for WWSM will be out at the same time. If the boxed patch is coming out first, I may place an order with Amazon today and have the game at my house tomorrow.

Shit, I might as well do that anyway. Amazon Prime for the win!

...*cry*

:(

It wouldn't be so annoying except...they have have a download for the Mac version of WSM.

Oh well, Rooney will just get injured in internationals anyway...

DaddyTorgo 11-30-2006 10:50 AM

YESSSS. PATCH ME BABY!

DaddyTorgo 11-30-2006 10:54 AM

ok...honestly...if i was SI i think I would have held off until the WWSM patch was ready too. because at this point it really seems like the WWSM players are "second-class citizens" and all that's going to do is drive down the number of copies of WWSM they sell again.

sorry wwsm players :-(

Pumpy Tudors 11-30-2006 11:14 AM

Yeah, the only reason I'm getting WWSM is because it's cheaper. If I could get FM for the same price, I wouldn't even mind waiting for it to come from overseas.

I'm hoping that the WWSM patch is out before the weekend, because I'll have the game tomorrow if I get around to placing my order within the next few hours.

Critch 11-30-2006 11:39 AM

I don't think SI would piss off 99% of their buyers just to keep 1% happy, unfortunately. (I'm saying unfortunately because I've got WWSM).

FrogMan 11-30-2006 11:52 AM

Great news! :) I almost had a feeling it was coming because I visited their forum during my break this morning, maybe 30 minutes prior to them posting the releas announcement :)

fwiw, this was just posted on SI's myspace blog:

Desnudo 11-30-2006 12:00 PM

I'm curious to see the patch impact to the matches. Hopefully more 1v1 scoring.

Pumpy Tudors 11-30-2006 12:20 PM

My order for WWSM has been placed. It will be at my house tomorrow when I get home from work. I just hope the patch is ready by then, too.

PraetorianX 11-30-2006 03:48 PM

According to reports on the SI forums, the WWSM patch is available on Filefront already and those whom have installed it have said that it works all fine and dandy. I think I might wait for something more official though, myself, as if I do not then it will inevitably be the incorrect decision.

PraetorianX 11-30-2006 04:14 PM

AH! IT IS THE REAL PATCH! SI just confirmed, sweet!

It's 100 MB, 20 MB larger than the FM patch because it's a dual Boxed/DD patch. So both boxed and DD users can DL it.

Ok, I shall now vanish from this world.
