Best PS3 game I've played this year. |

Only one more week, can't wait. |
Geez, I've heard so much about Scribblenauts that I thought it's been out for months. Which, in turn, made me think this was a Wii port of it, which made me very exicted (don't have a DS, and I can't see me spending more money no matter how awesome this game is).

I'm probably way too excited for this game. |
Just finished playing Ghostbusters on the 360. Pretty fun game and having the real voices and a nice storyline brought back some sweet nostalgia. The story mode was kind of short though and I didn't like having to do most of the battles in these alternate universes. There is something fun about catching ghosts in real world environments. I also prefered the ghosts you'd have to capture vs the ones you just blew up.
I'd love to see a Ghostbusters game modeled after GTA or inFamous. An open ended game that lets you drive around at your leisure in Ecto 1 and complete missions with some side ones thrown in. Fun game though, but doesn't have a real long shelf life. |
EA has put up the Demo for both NBA Live and FIFA if anyoneīs interested. (only for Gold members for now though) .
Liveīs perimeter movement is actually pretty nice ad the DNA scouting report looks very promising and is a potentially great feature, if it werenīt for the atrocious post play and collision engine or if i had money for 2 basketball games ... FIFA feels great, player movement, ball physique both again improved. It seems that FIFA is the one sports series where theyīve really made a concerted effort moving to a more sim gameplay and FIFA 09 allready was imo better than PES (or is it "Winning Eleven" in the US ? ) and the demo has an awesome feel to it and actually does everything right that made PES great until they went a different course 2,3 editions back (changed movement drastically) . Itīs almost comical that FIFA now literally plays like PES from a few years back (with added things of course) while PES has been getting criticism for the same things people hated on FIFA a few years back. |

I found the NBA Live demo but can't find the FIFA one. Was disappointed by NBA Live. I know it's set to a lower level, but I was able to either get a layup or dunk with Kobe every trip down the floor. Liked the crowd reactions but thought some of the animations were slow and choppy. I was under the impression they stole one of the lead developers from 2K but it looks like it'll take some time before his ideas get put in. |
just looked it up, FIFA demo wonīt be until the 17th in the US. Sorry for teasing ...
|
Can anyone tell me how to make a new user for The Beatles Rock Band? I don't want to play under my wife's name and I can't find anything anywhere to fix this???
(dunno if Wii version will be different from others, but I'll take anything at this point) |
Anyone else looking forward to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 coming out this week?
|
I just finished Batman this morning and I'd definitely rank it in my top 5 games of all time for the 360. It is a bit on the short side, but the entire game is high quality. I really enjoyed the fighting system in particular, seemingly very simple, but so much fun.

Any racing fans out there? Dirt 2 is out and I am looking forward to it since Dirt was one of the highly underrated games out there. Also, Need for Speed Shift and Forza Motorsport 3 are on the horizon.
|
Quote:
Forget about Gran Turismo 5? It's just as big as before and now has what will apparently be the only NASCAR license on the market. Toss in damage modeling (finally!) and I'm not sure there's a better package for $60. |
Quote:
Nope. Didn't forget it. I don't have a PS3 which is why I didn't mention it. |
Pre-ordered Scribblenauts and just got the call that it will be available tomorrow morning. Can't wait!
|
Going to TRU tomorrow to get Scribblenauts. If you get it on Tuesday for $30, you get a $15 gift card :)
SI |
I planned on just buying the game and immediately typing 1 million dollars into it and heading to the bank.
foolproof imo |
Quote:
IF they toss in other cars that actually seem to be racing you, and an actual sense of speed, and they'll have something. |
I've seen mixed opinions on scribblenauts so I'll take a wait and see with it.
I've seen 2 places (game informer and IGN) say that it's a blast at first and then you realize that the vast majority of the items in the game don't work like you'd expect and you end up using the same small handful of objects to beat each level. Then again, I've seen reviewers that think the game is simply amazing. Thus, the wait before I purchase. |
For Scribblenauts, I feel like I've already spoiled myself by seeing some of the crazy stuff people have done and that's why I've stopped trying to read reviews and spoilers. I don't think it can possibly live up to the expectations created by the time machine-dinosaur-robot-zombie thing. That said, I'm definitely going to be getting it tomorrow, particularly with the deal at Toys R Us as that basically makes it a $15 game.
SI |
Quote:
Can you use the gift card right then and there to get the game for $15 or do you pay $30 for the game and get to use the gift card the next time you are in the store? It's a bit longer of a drive for me so I rarely shop there but if I can use the gift cards then and there it'd be worth it, I think they're doing a gift card for Mario and Luigi: BIS as well. |
Red Dead Revolver was pretty fun when I rented it, though my roommate at the time beat it and GUN in like 2 days, which sucked the enjoyment and desire to buy them out of me.
And am I the only one who gets pissed off when he sees Uncharted cuz i keep thinking it's a new Uncharted Waters game from KOEI and then it's not? |
Quote:
I called TRU and they told me the gift card doesn't activate for something like six hours after it's issued. Basically this deal does not make Scribblenauts a $15 game but rather is useful only if you know you'll return to TRU for a future purchase. |
Quote:
Yeah, been like that for a while. Bright side, you could use it to get the new Mario & Luigi for $20! |
Picked up Scribblenauts today and have already laughed pretty hard though I've only played it for about 15 minutes. I did get a free hat like the kid in the game wears (kind of a rooster comb thing) with it.
|
The puzzles are pretty good so far, the difficulty has ramped up after some really easy levels which was one of my concerns going in.
I'm having too much fun with the sandbox mode, seeing what kinds of dinosaurs are best at fighting and then killing the winner with the help of a stealth bomber. |
Played a couple hours of Scribblenauts. Overall I'm enjoying it, but it does have some major annoyances. The controls are pretty awful, and the auto-resetting of the camera back on Maxwell drives me INSANE. Extremely frustrating and I almost wonder if the game would be better served by not having an on screen protagonist.
It is an absolute blast coming up with words and testing them out and trying different interactions. I don't know how long the new shine will last, but it's made me laugh several times already. It's definitely a game I'd show off to people not into gaming either. The advanced mode or whatever it's called on the challenges makes things a bit tougher and is fun. Makes you think outside the box a bit. |
Seconded on the controls. I've been pretty frustrated several times. That's one I didn't see coming.
|
I wish you could just move Maxwell around with the d-pad and use L + the d-pad and/or the face buttons for the camera. That might not work with the menu for using objects being stylus controlled but d-pad and buttons could work for that too.
|
Quote:
I'm having a blast with the game but will agree that the controls can be frustrating at times. I just created a blowtorch to melt a block of ice, then created a tranquilizer gun to put a bear to sleep and then created a parachute to descend slowly to pick up a star on a ledge. While that level was a lot of fun it took two or three tries to get the taps just right to make sure I went right to the edge of the ledge and not right over. I keep pressing the arrow keys out of habit thinking that I might be able to have more control over Maxwell with them. The game is blast but the omission of any sort of non-touch control option seems a big one after just a few hours of play. |
Quote:
I got that one in two objects by using a flamethrower to melt the ice and attack the bear, knocking it off the cliff down to near the other bear who then killed him before parachuting down. It's annoying when the character moves when you want to drag a small object over but you miss by a pixel. |
Quote:
I saw the review on IGN and that was their big complaint. Considering how much they absolutely love the game, they still gave it an 8.7, I think- and that 1.3 they lost is based almost solely on the controls. SI |
Quote:
The level where that (and the controls) really started to annoy me was the ramp-bicycle level early on. Each time I missed by a little or Maxwell got off the bike or didn't quite get far enough or... whatever, I had to move the ramp, get him to jump just right to get back up that hill, and then start all over. And I had to do that at least 10 times. That said, I absolutely love playing through some of the levels the extra 3 times to get the gold stars. For instance, on the farm animals one- I started out simple with like cow, pig, and chicken. And the next 3 were pretty easy, too- horse, dog, and cat or something. But then you start running out of the really obvious farm animals and before long you have a screen with an ox, a llama, an emu, a duck, a goose, a rabbit that the farmer gores with his pitchfork, and a host of other stuff because some of them count and some don't :) SI |
I know there's some fans of Final Fantasy Tactics on this board. Just wanted to mention that it was released on the Playstation Network yesterday for $9.99 and can be downloaded and played on the PSP or PS3. Really fun strategy game if you weren't lucky enough to play it.

Second that. Plus the jobs are awesome. |

Yes it is. It's actually a good deal at $9.99. I believe the used copies sell for more than that due to the demand for it and the relatively low supply. They're pretty hard to find. |

Definitely plan on picking up Forza Motorsport 3 if it makes a good impression upon renting, loaned Forza 2 from a buddy multiple times and loved it. Itīs amazing how far racing games have come, although the variety and complexity at times is on the edge of too much. |
Quote:
Yeah, I love FM2. Looking forward to FM3. I rented Need for Speed: Shift and it's pretty good. The sound is excellent and you get a really awesome sense of speed and being on the edge of control while you're in cockpitview. However, the cars handling just seems a little....off to me. Nowhere near as smooth and realistic as Forza. Havingsaid that, Grid remains my favourite racing game. Not as realistic as Forza but just damn fun. |
Picked up MUA2 on release day, being a big fan of MUA and XMLs. Pretty fun, very polished, but feels a little unfinished/rushed. And personally, I'm kinda bummed they basically eliminated the RPG elements.
You pick up 'bonuses' instead of gear, and can only equip 3 for the entire party. The thing keeps resetting you to 'auto-spend' on abilities, and sadly, after a while, you find yourself figuring you may as well leave it there. There's no opening of new abilities or assigning different abilities to different buttons. You have two to start, a third at level 5, a fourth at level 10. The fusions are kinda fun, but a bit unwieldy at times. I'm also finding it gets a bit mind-numbingly button-mashing easy. I started on the hardest available difficulty, and I've basically quit saving because it's very rare/never that I lose a whole party. Think it's happened twice and I'm 75% through. Re-start from the checkpoint, which is rarely that long ago, and away ya go. There were complaints about useless powers and weaker characters in previous versions, so they fixed that for sure. Feels pretty much exactly the same no matter which character you're using. The strategy of having a flyer, a tank, etc. is really of no use in this version. Just pick any four and they'll perform as well as any other four. Whether you think that's good or bad, well... Not to bag on it entirely. It is fun, it is beautiful, and the story's pretty great. Choosing sides pretty much guarantees a replay, and of course, there's all sorts of achievements and things to find. For a Marvel geek like m'self, it's obviously worth owning. If I was just a big fan of XML/MUA, I wouldn't be dying to pick it up right away. Give it a price drop and some DLC, then it should be worthwhile. |
Quote:
Agreed. For me personally, XML2 was the best game in this series of games. This game is fun, but there are quite a few things I would change. Everybody just seems the same. I do enjoy using Deadpool's alternate costume and I'll play thru it again, but they really just keep oversimplifying these games. Another knock on the game for me, maybe it's because I'm a casual comic book fan, is that there are too many people in the game I don't know at all. |
I have no idea what games you people are taling about. Though I do enjoy HDUWMNDHSWUYDTUYATWTSTD, fantastic game.
|
Since I ended up getting Madden someplace else, I switched my Madden reserve money to Lego Indiana Jones 2. My son loved the first one.
I'm not sure how different the levels will be for the first 3 movies, thought the Crystal Skull is in now. The exciting thing is you are going to get to create your own levels. I think that will make it a lot of fun. |
MUA = Marvel Ultimate Alliance
XML = X-Men something-or-other-that-starts-with-L |
X-Men Legends
|
Quote:
I think they added levels that take place between the movies. I'd love to see them make a Lego Batman 2. Plenty of storylines they can do with that cast of characters. |
k, finished off Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 (thanks to having a cold/flu over the weekend). Very meh about the whole experience. By the timer, it says it took me 10 hours, I assume that includes simulators, etc. Don't even know if I'll bother with a replay.
The story really peters out in the 2nd half. The battles definitely got tougher, for the most part... but I beat the final boss with one guy (Luke Cage). On Super-Heroic. It didn't get tedious, but I think most of that was because I was working on all the unlockables (which weren't much, another 'bonus' to the pile). I entirely gave up on caring about leveling up about a third of the way into the game. I'd highly recommend renting first and blast through it. |
Quote:
I haven't finished it just yet, but I'm ready to put it down. The game is way too easy. There has only been 1 boss fight so far that hasn't been a straight button masher for me. This one is pretty lame....
Spoiler
|
Agreed, the storyline really went lame in a hurry. Too bad.

Some great stuff here. Game engine footage from GT5............
HD version of the video......... Gran Turismo TV Forza footage was also released of the same car in action.......... GameSpot Video: Forza Motorsport 3 Ferrari Trailer |
You do realize that in-engine and in-game are not -really- comparable?
That being said, to me, they look identical - which is to say they both looked great, which is great news for ps3 and 360 owners alike. Quote:

Damn.. 2k really does basketball well. They need to get their hockey and baseball games in order!
|
I'm going to try not to buy NBA 2k10 but its going to be hard, my problem is I don't have a favorite team and I don't care for the NBA all that much.
Fully customizable draft classes is making it hard to not pull the trigger. |
Has anyone tried the NBA 2K10 draft camp DLC? I tried the demo and it seems like fun. Wonder if the full game is worth it.
|
wouldnīt bother with it now with the full game right around the corner where you can do basically the same thing only there itīs in a summer league setting (with real life young players from the league).
It was a very nice game to get an idea of what to expect in 2K10 (wasnīt fully 2K10 engine, more like 2K9,5 ) and a great adictive time waster, but at this point itīs only use would be to get a head start for the full games my player mode as you can import the player you created in the DLC. |
New Video : NBA 2K10 Screenshots and Videos for Xbox 360 - Operation Sports
And Screenshots, including menu, sliders, ratings (new rating system FTW) etc : NBA 2K10 Screenshots and Videos for Xbox 360 - Operation Sports Love the new look of the game, love the menus, love the biger difference in ratings (indivicual ratings go from 25-99, OVRL roughly from 35/40-99 instead of like 60-99 as before) Menus might be strange at the beginning but i just love that new style, much more friendly to the eye and might be a real improvement. Couldnīt watch the video at work, if anybody finds a youtube link or even better a downloadable links ... According to the first reactions from mods that got to play the game over at OS, defense is indeed highly improved in terms of AI and scoring in the paint got tougher again. Thatīs all i needed to hear really :) Apparently commentary is actually worth listening to this time around for some time. |
Anyone tried the NBA Live 10 demo?
I tried to get into it, but I couldn't. Everything felt off. Not sure if it was because I've been playing 2k the past 3 years, but Live doesn't do it for me anymore. |
Live got a real nice feel on the perimeter, but everything inside the 3 point arc is way off. Driving to the paint without resistance, unbelievably awkward layup animations, a joke of a postgame etc. Plus even the good things like the step back jumpers feel off in that they are way to powerfull, kind of like that "super-shot" feature back in 06 or 07 (?) .
Iīd say donīt worry. If youīve played 2K and had just a few gripes with 2K9 youīll likely love 2K10 as they seem to have corrected nearly every widespread issue (in particular lack of help D and rotations, too many PiP, no midrange game) . Q&A Topic at OS from Mods getting to play the game : NBA 2k10 Q&A - Full Game - Operation Sports Forums And apparently drive & kick is back ! |
Mmmmmm
I seriously can't wait for 2k10. :) |
I traded for Batman: Arkham Asylum... just started it, but on the case it says I can play as Joker for the PS3 version? Anyone know how to get that?
|
Not sure if this applies to the PS3 version, but the 360 version had a card inside with a code to redeem a download (for a challenge map.) It was a 1 time use item.
|
Quote:
lol ah dammit that better not apply to the PS3 version too, since it's a used game and I'm guessing the previous owner used the code then. |
Ah a quick Google search says it's a DLC challenge map thing, so I should be alright.
|
Well I downloaded the FIFA demo and loved it. Heard there was still going to be an issue of every team essentially playing the same style. But I did think the gameplay was really fun.
Does anyone know if you can do multiplayer manager mode? |
Also downloaded the PES demo. It was fun, although not as fluid as FIFA. The physics aren't as good and it wasn't as much fun to play. It did however have superior AI when it came to computer controlled players. They passed along the backline, kicked it out when in trouble, and made some interesting passes that I didn't even see. This is opposed to the FIFA AI which is just a go forward and attack mindset.
So it seems PES has much better AI and potentially better gameplay. But FIFA wins in every other category. Not sure what to go with here. |
The last few seasons I went with PES on the Wii (which if anyone hasn't tried it is very non traditional, you use the IR pointer to aim passes, shoot, and send players on runs) which I really like but it'll only be six or seven months since the last one and I wonder how much Konami will have improved it in that time. I might switch over to FIFA for a year, I'm not that great at the demo but it was pretty fun.
|
The new FIFA on Wii will have IR pointer passing, too, which is the best part of the control system in PES to me, so I'm interested in that.
|
NBA 2k10 is looking pretty good. I didn't pick up last year's game but enjoyed running a Timberwolves dynasty for 2K8. Might have to pick this up. I will be sorely disappointed once again though if they screw up the rookie generation in association mode.
|
Quote:
my hope is that with the opportunity to create and upload draft classes some guys will put in the work and create realistic (fantasy) draft classes and share them ... |
NBA 2K10 demo is out, for now only on Live Gold for XBox 360.
And only 1 quarter, no commentary and no playcalling apparently (canīt check myself). I find it ridiculous with what those companies get away in terms of selling a product ... Anyway, should give an indication as to how the controlls are at least. Buying it anyway, but for some thatīs a big point. |
Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta is now live for all PS3 users (don't need a code anymore). 1.2 GB download.
I'm extremely excited about the release of Uncharted 2. Haven't heard any bad things about it and the current Metacritic score of 97 places it as the 6th highest reviewed game in the history of the site. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (ps3) reviews at Metacritic.com |
I don't play through a ton of games, ones that I've "beat" in recent years are the Call of Duty series, Ghostbusters, Mass Effect, and probably a handful of others. However, I just finished playing out Batman: Arkham Asylum and I have to say that it was absolutely stellar. There were a couple things that made me have to completely stop just to appreciate what they did. I'm not big into the stealth-style games but this was really enjoyable. I would give it an 8.5 or 9/10 but then there were some mind-blowing scenes (see spoiler) that really make it a 9.5/10. Money well spent for sure.

Just a heads up, word on the Internet is that the latest Wii system update (4.2) can brick your console so maybe hold off on updating for now.
14 hours in Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story is the second best game I've played this year behind Dragon Quest V. Witty writing, beautiful 2D graphics, and a great turn-based battle system. |
FIFA is out in a lot of stores in Europe allready and officially tomorrow. Ended up buying at in the end as my local big store had a 25% offer on all games today.
So far had a few nice games, looks good and plays very smooth. Even more sophisticated than last year though, definitely no game for some mindless fun. |

actually they kind of do play different in 10. Limited sample size for me, but so far i am recognizing differences. Maybe not team-specific, but definitely in relation to the stature of the team and the result of the game. teams that are leading become more defensive in the 2nd half, especially weaker ones, and teams loosing go more attacking. Changing their formations as well as playing more agressive or more "loose" (not pressing but letting you some space in the early midfield and then attacking about 10-15 metres into their half) |
Barcelona playing in the same style as a League Two team would put me off a bit.
From the EA forums I was annoyed to learn that you can't edit players' attributes for offline play, I watched this youtube video that has overall ratings for players on a number of teams and saw some things I'd like to fix once I get the game in a few weeks. Darren Fletcher got dicked over pretty bad for one example. |
you canīt other than a little bit of attribute redistributing (take away at one attribute, up another one) .
Didnīt you get the memo ? We have live season now ! Itīs only a little bit of our money ! It is really accurate and not at all exagerrated ! Purely a business decicion on there part, no Editor = more incentive to pay for their updates. Heck, you canīt even save replays to your harddrive, only upload them. Of course, only if you are a paying Gold Member at XBox Live ... |

Interesting info about Best Buy's game trade-in program. Looks like the trade-in amounts are quite a bit higher at Best Buy when compared to Gamestop.

Last year they all did the same thing so a month in, I could telegraph every pass they were making and knew every weakness in their defense. If that is fixed, I'm really looking forward to manager mode. Question for you or anyone into soccer. Is there a site or something where I can learn the structures and such for the leagues? They all have different rules, relegations, and weird tournaments mixed in. It's kind of confusing for someone who doesn't follow all these things and I can't find a site that explains it all. For instance, I was kind of following the Chicago Fire but then out of the blue we are playing some Mexican team for something. |

not really an expert how it works on the american continent, but iīll try Thereīs allways a domestic league and a domestic cup (with lower level teams participating, changes from country to country how many), then a certain number of teams qualify for 1 or more continental competition, in case of the US it is the CONCACAF Champions League with teams from North America, Central America and the Caribean. However in the US itīs different in terms of who qualifies than f.e. in Europe because of the Playoffs. Really, wikipedia is an excellent source here : 2009–10 CONCACAF Champions League - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Just click from there to learn about the associated countries league systems and so forth. Donīt think thereīs a good guide out there, at least i donīt know of any. Especially stay away from anything comparing european to US soccer system, the few i have read through the years are rubish ... In case you are interested, now europe : In Europe it is totally different than the US. Thereīs leagues all the way down to 10th league or even deeper with promotion and relegation. The first league (Premier League in England, Bundesliga in Germany for example) in basically all countries has between 12 and 20 clubs that play each other twice (no divisions or conferences) and at the end of a season a certain number of teams qualify for european Competitions (champions league and Europa League) depending on the countriesīs teamsī previous success in those competitions. F.e. England gets 3 direct and 1 qualifying bid for the Champions League, Germany gets 2 and 1, a country like Iceland gets just 1 bid for the qualification round. Europa League is below the champions league, so the teams qualified for that were the next-placed teams in last seasons league after the teams in the champions league. example germany and england (note how seamless it goes down, and they arenīt even complete, below the "91 regional leagues" there is a number in the high hundreds) : German football league system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia English football league system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia just type in "country X football League system" in google and put any major country in there. Hope that helps, sorry for not being able to explain it in a sentence or 2, but you just canīt. |
