Good reading, and glad to know folks are interested in this. :) |
Oh lord... Oilers just lost (with his last Celine pick) ;).
No one is voting for a list with that song :D. |
And after reading the lyrics I am left with a big WTF. You do realize this is being voted on by all of FOFC right?

Aye - I love that song. Subby's winning on my personal board, though I do like NoMyth's collection. |

I think this is a great pick. |
Not sure how you can say American Idiot doesn't fit in with the rest of those Anti establishment songs. Just because it is more refined doesn't make it any less fitting fot the catergory.
|
Maple has certainly come into contention after his last two picks... its beginning to get interesting...
|
ML - I LOVE that pick.. it is far better than Celine Dion... I didn't like your list early on, but I think it is shaping up pretty well.. in the top 3 or 4 right now for sure...
|
I have a pick for Butter but he asked me to give him 15 minutes or so to check in before picking for him.
|
I understand where people are coming from, but the fact that in a music draft I had to somehow "rebound" from Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash makes my head explode.

You set it up so it was about more than just who the best artsits are ;). |

NoMyths is on the clock
|
Unchained Melody is the best love song taken so far, I'd have to say.
There's one artist who has a few love songs that I'm stunned is still around. |
There's one person left that I think will be taken soon too.
|
There are no less than 3 musicians that I find it amazing made it out of the first round, as well as 2 (at least to me) clear cut dominant songs in a given category that havent been selected....
|
NoMyths was here when his pick came up. Not sure what happened to him, he didn't send me anything so we're stuck.
|
I'll be around for a bit if he comes back
|
I may be headed to happy hour soon. There are 10 or so picks before I'm up again, but just thought I'd let you know. You can always try to proxy through wade, or we can just assume it's going to slow down over the evening and possibly the weekend.
|
...or I can send in a list before I leave, but I'd hate to do it that far ahead.
|
I'm back...was working and lost in thought. :)
Will pick shortly. |
by the way ijust noticed the Paul McCartney song is under my name on the spreadsheet. I don't remember who picked it, but thought iwould let y'all know it isn't me. :)

Quote:
Apparently I really wanted Lennon and McCartney to reunite, as he is in the next column. :) Fixed. |
Your next pick will be "I got my mind set on you"

is that a cover? :)

And now for something completely different: for my crossover choice, I'm taking another rock/rap/electronica hybrid. This artist managed to pull off a nearly impossible task: make a song that crosses all listener barriers to achieve multi-platinum success while still being credible (or at least a reasonable facsimile thereof, all things considered). It served as the soundtrack and thematic calling-card for a popular film, notched a Grammy and a Golden Globe, became the first rap song to win an Academy Award -- and wasn't some lame piece of crap like My Heart Will Go On (which, I might add, beat out Elliott Smith's "Miss Misery" for the Oscar that year, an unforgiveable if understandable mistake).
Classic - 1.3 - Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan Epic - 3.3 - The End - The Doors Arena - 4.8 - Where the Streets Have No Name - U2 Trendsetter - 2.8 - Respect - Aretha Franklin Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - 6.8 - Lose Yourself - Eminem Cover - Anti-Establishment - 5.3 - Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival |
Interesting...
I had Eminem in mind for crossover, but I would have used his song with Dido or Elton John to be a more direct crossover. |
Lose Yourself is a better song than Stan.
|
Lathum's pick
Classic -Foxy Lady- Jimi Hendrix- 3.2 Epic - BaBa O'reilly ( also known as teenage wasteland)- The Who - 2.9 Arena - Iron Man- Black Sabbath- 6.9 Trendsetter - Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana- 1.2 Love Song - At Last- Eda James - 4.9 ( heard at every wedding) One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment -American Idiot-Green Day 5.2 |
I thought Elton/Eminem would have been a better choise. IMO you are grasping with Lose yourself from my own personnal definition of crossover. To me crossover is someone performing outside their element, Lose yourself is a rap song and eminem is a rapper. To me it doesn't matter if people from various industries enjoyed the song, that only tells me that they found a way to make them enjoy a rap song.
|
The definitive female popstar of the 80s and early 90s. Millions of girls dressed like her. The video for this song was cutting edge and provocative, as was her infamous MTV video music awards performance - writhing around on the stage in a wedding dress. I gotta say I am shocked that Madonna is still in play - and I'll use Like a Virgin as my trendsetter.
Classic - Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin (1-1) Epic - Freebird, Lynyrd Skynyrd (3-1) Arena - Trendsetter - Like a Virgin, Madonna (6-10) Love Song - Lola, The Kinks (5-1) One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - You Really Got Me, Van Halen (4-10) Anti-Establishment - Fuck Tha Police, N.W.A. I think I would have used "Sing for the Moment" |
Is a rap song that uses a sample from another genre really a crossover? That's like half the rap song released this decade.
|
6th round for Madonna... like Subby, I'm shocked none of y'all picked her before this.
|
"Lose Yourself" is his best song, but I don't really see how it fits the crossover category in the slightest.
|
Quote:
True. Eminem had mainstream appeal long before "Lose Yourself". Dunno. I knew he'd get picked in this category and "Lose Yourself" was probably the right choice. |
Quote:
I must admit she slipped past my radar. Doing all of this my first thoughts are very much not mainstream and I have to rack my brain for things that are. Having said that, if you already have a trendsetter, the rest of her music falls into one of a couple very deep categories. |

TIME TO PARTY BITCHES!
Nothing says fun like this raunchy rap party anthem: "You down with OPP (Yeah you know me) 3X Who's down with OPP (Every last homie) You down with OPP (Yeah you know me) 3X Who's down with OPP (All the homies)" O.P.P. - Naughty By Nature Classic - Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin (1-1) Epic - Freebird, Lynyrd Skynyrd (3-1) Arena - Trendsetter - Like a Virgin, Madonna (6-10) Love Song - Lola, The Kinks (5-1) One-Hit Wonder - Party - O.P.P., Naughty By Nature (7-1) Crossover - Cover - You Really Got Me, Van Halen (4-10) Anti-Establishment - Fuck Tha Police, N.W.A. (2-10) edit: if there was a medley with this and Hip Hop Hooray...it might be perfection :) |
I'm going to take a gamble and not send in any picks. I hope things don't fly this evening and I hold things up. You can try wade if that happens (Wade, I forgot my cell at home. Do you have g's #?). Otherwise, I'll be around late this evening and I should be around off and on tomorrow. I'm assuming we won't rush people over the weekend, but I could be wrong. :)
|
OPP is a great pick. Was definitely on my list, and I even recommended it to someone else today before coming up with an even better idea.
|
Lathum's pick
Classic -Foxy Lady- Jimi Hendrix- 3.2 Epic - BaBa O'reilly ( also known as teenage wasteland)- The Who - 2.9 Arena - Iron Man- Black Sabbath- 6.9 Trendsetter - Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana- 1.2 Love Song - At Last- Eda James - 4.9 ( heard at every wedding) One-Hit Wonder - Party - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer - George Thorogood - 7.2 Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment -American Idiot-Green Day 5.2 |
NoMyths is on the clock, meaning we should have a pick posted by Wednesday.
|
I had to go to iTunes to find out how that song sounded. I don't believe I've ever heard it before.

Quote:
With the two woman quota, Madonna should have been a top two or three round pick at worst... |
Pick coming up.
Y'all are being ridiculous about the crossover definition. :p |
I definitely give Lathum the edge over Subby in that last exchange.
Heck, OPP could have been used as a Crossover. That song was HUGE. |
Love? Love?
Classic - 1.3 - Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan Epic - 3.3 - The End - The Doors Arena - 4.8 - Where the Streets Have No Name - U2 Trendsetter - 2.8 - Respect - Aretha Franklin Love Song - 7.3 - Can't Get Enough of Your Love Babe - Barry White One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - 6.8 - Lose Yourself - Eminem Cover - Anti-Establishment - 5.3 - Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival |

I did but IMO it fits into this catergory better |
I agree, there are plenty of other good covers out there too. Some that I am shocked that they haven't been picked.
|
Quote:
Which song? |
Actually Thorogood has a ton of songs that could have been used for party songs or covers.
|
I like Lathum's Thorogood pick. I definitely equate it to a bona fide party song.
|
Based on an earlier comment, with the general population voting, I would still go with a square peg/round hole song that EVERYONE has heard of versus a more obsure song that fits the category but would have someone going google because they never heard of it.
What pick are we on? |
Regarding Johnny B Goode, from wiki:
The song's impact on the rock 'n' roll world is immeasurable. |
7.4 Buccaneer.
|
Quote:
hmmmm, I wonder who added that...:) |
I will be interesting to see how people vote...I guess there's a number of things one can consider and no guildelines (kinda like the Baseball Hall of Fame).
At least these three are obvious: - category fit - how much you like it - how much the world likes it |
Quote:
Hell, it doesn't even have a wikipedia entry :p. Even Gary Glitter's Rock and Roll does ;). |
Butter_of_69's choice
Classic - Epic - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen, 1.4 Arena - Rock and Roll (Part Two) - Gary Glitter, 3.4 Trendsetter - Love Song - My Girl - The Temptations, 6.7 One-Hit Wonder - Party - Celebration - Kool and the Gang, 5.4 Crossover - Superstition - Stevie Wonder, 4.7 Killing Me Softly - The Fugees - Cover, 7.4 Anti-Establishment - Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols, 2.7 |
What a minute, is it my turn or not?
|
not. you have the pick 7.9
|
Don't mind him. He always thinks its his turn ;).
|
OK, my pick...
This one is a reach, and I know it. I could probably risk waiting a round or two. Maybe it's not even a worthy pick at all. That's fine. But I want to make this pick for three reasons: 1.) The "cover" category is shaping up to be a tough one 2.) It's a shady way to get my first female singer into the mix 3.) This guy kicks ass, and I want him on my squad. Classic - Epic - 5.5 - Thriller - Michael Jackson Arena - 1.7 - Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses Trendsetter - 2.4 - Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley Love Song - 6.6 Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers One-Hit Wonder - Party - 4.6 - 1999 - Prince Crossover - 3.5 - Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash Cover - 7.5 - Burning Down the House - Tom Jones & The Cardigans Anti-Establishment - |
This was actually one of the 3 songs I sent Maple Leafs at the start of this draft. So to be able to get them at this point makes me happy.
Classic - Epic - 2.5 - Another Brick in the Wall — Pink Floyd Arena - 6.5-Do You Feel Like We Do--Peter Frampton Trendsetter - 1.6 - Good Vibrations - Beach Boys Love Song -7.6 - Baby Love--The Supremes One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - 4.5-I Can't Stop Loving You--Ray Charles Cover - 5.6 - Proud Mary--Ike and Tina Turner Anti-Establishment -3.6-London Calling--The Clash |
Anti-Establisment- Cop Killer- Body Count 7.7

Yeah, I have him on the phone now.. he's totally unprepared and at a bar right now, so this could be interesting ;)... |
I somewhat buzzed lordscarlet is locked in with his pick...
This will be in the Love Song category and is not a super "exciting" pick, but it's a very good, traditional love song that even won Song of the Year in the Grammys in 1992. Classic - Epic - 6.3 - "Space Oddity", David Bowie Arena - 5.8 - "You Shook Me All Night Long", AC/DC Trendsetter - 2.3 - "Rapper's Delight", The Sugarhill Gang Love Song - "Unforgettable" - Natalie Cole with Nat King Cole One-Hit Wonder - Party - 4.3 - "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)", Beastie Boys Crossover - 1.8 - "Walk This Way", Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith Cover -Anti-Establishment - 3.8 - "Killing in the Name", Rage Against the Machine |
Cover - I Love Rock 'N Roll - Joan Jett (7.9)
|
Quote:
BRILLIANT PICK!!! |
solid female cover picks here with Joan Jett and the Fugees. The key to me is that the orginal has to be recongizable and the cover has to be good. This eliminates many of the covers selected so far but these two are solid.
|
who did the original of I love Rock and roll?
|
Quote:
Arrows, I belive. From what I saw, they never marketed it but I knew Jett's story behind it. |
Iron Man was going to be my trendsetter pick since Sabbath are considered to be a pioneer in heavy metal but since it was taken....
Classic - 1.10 Hotel California - The Eagles Epic - 2.1 American Pie - Don McLean Arena - 6.1 Arena - Rock and Roll All Night - Kiss Trendsetter - Love Song - 5.10 - My Heart Will Go On (Theme from Titanic) - Celine Dion One-Hit Wonder - 3.10 Macarena - Los Del Rio Party - 7.10 - Old Time Rock n Roll - Bob Seger Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - 4.1 We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister |
And with my 8.1 pick I am going to go with a trendsetter.
Classic - 1.10 Hotel California - The Eagles Epic - 2.1 American Pie - Don McLean Arena - 6.1 Arena - Rock and Roll All Night - Kiss Trendsetter - 8.1 - Blitzkrieg Bop - The Ramones Love Song - 5.10 - My Heart Will Go On (Theme from Titanic) - Celine Dion One-Hit Wonder - 3.10 Macarena - Los Del Rio Party - 7.10 - Old Time Rock n Roll - Bob Seger Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - 4.1 We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister The Godfathers of Punk. |
From one of the greatest sex drugs rock 'n roll bands of all time
Party - Girls,Girls,Girls - Motley Crue (8.2) |
WOW! Awesome pick!

There is just absolutely no way this is his best song. I'll give you it has the most mass appeal (so good for this exrecise), but not even close to his best song. |

Nice job, Buc. I was trying to send someone some kind of telepathic vibes with this one. |
O.P.P. was an interesting pick. I was in high school when Naughty by Nature made their debut and I would have actually said Hip Hop Horray was a bigger party song from them than O.P.P. We middle class, mid-western white kids knew our hip hop. :)
|
This was a fantastic thread idea and I am very upset I was so late to the party. I really would have liked to have been involved in the draft.
I wonder if Layla being put in the epic category will hurt that list. Clapton is far and away my favorite artist and I certainly agree it fits there, but so many people these days think of the accoustic version of Layla or just the lyrical part of the song. It's common for radio stations that still play it to cut off the instrumental part. With the depth of the epic category and those concerns above I would have gone with Layla in the love song category. |
Two songs left on my radar, if they don't get picked I won't vote for anybody.
|
OK. So I'm eating my after-drinking cheese steak and attempting to read the thread. My first comment: "Wow, we flew threw this round." My second comment: "Wow, we hit my pick and then a wall. Wade could've waite until I was sober!!!!!!"
So, I think I'm gonna hit the drunk guy thread for the first time. Quote:

Why did I multiquote this? Oh yeah, I almost went with the ramones for hti. It fits "me" better, but I think "Rapper's Delight" is even mroe definitively "rap"'s origin than the Ramones are "punks"'s origin. OK. Time to visit Ping: drunk Guy Thank Wade!! You're my dawg! |
