It's interesting..

I think Foxy Lady would be my 3rd or 4th choice for Hendrix songs, even when thinking about the masses...

Fans are pulling of their jerseys and throwing them in the garbage. Mel Kiper is ripping the pick. This is Jets circa 1990.

Yeah, I'm pretty speechless. Nothing against Hendrix, mind you.

Honestly, I think its the best cover song ever done. I was tempted to go with in the Round 2, but I didn't think the Stones would last.

lordscarlet 02-22-2007 04:04 PM

So no skipping if it's outside of work hours? Or should I send in a list if I go to happy hour?

I was shocked no one picked it first round.

Dude, you shouldn't send a list. You can scan the bars jukebox for good songs.

But I'd have to remember them by the time I stumble home. :)

The heckling fans is the best part of the process :D

NoMyths 02-22-2007 04:07 PM

Yep, I had Watchtower as my #1 cover, but I suppose it's all about priorities.

Time for the epic. And sorry, but I'm not a believer in Freebird. Just don't think it's that great of a song. When it comes to what I'd consider to be truly epic, I'm thinking about indians scattered on dawn's highway bleeding, heartache and the loss of god...and the kind of guitar work that is closer to an aural painting than electricity and metal. Cabaret, snakes and fire, tripped-out guitarwork, distance and cacaphony, spoken word poetry -- and probably the most famous use of the f-bomb in rock music, though you'd pretty much have to hear them live or on a bootleg to find out just what Mr. Mojo Risin' wanted to do to his mother, though it's clear on any version. You got it:

Classic - 1.3 - Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
Epic - 3.3 - The End - The Doors
Arena -
Trendsetter - 2.8 - Respect - Aretha Franklin
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

bah.

How can you cay that song isn't a classic.

I am totaly aproaching this from a mass appeal and you can't tell me there isn't a more popular Hendrix song.

Send a list. I probably won't skip anyone outside of work hours, but if there's a few people online and the people behind you have picks already, I might get feisty. Better safe than sorry.

All Along the Watchtower, Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Voodoo Child to name a few. Foxey Lady's way down IMO. Either way, we'll see. :D

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 04:10 PM

Butter is up. He sent an original list of three, then a revised version. The revised version has been picked dry, but he has one song left from his original. I'm going to hold off picking for him for now and see if he shows up.

Send your picks (if you won't be around).

You go out on the street and ask the average person to name a Hendrix song 65% will say Foxy Lady :)

cthomer5000 02-22-2007 04:11 PM

if you go Hendrix, "Purple Haze" is the slam-dunk pick. Shit, i'd even take "Manic Depression" before "Foxy Lady".

The fans are pissed. You took a Division II QB when the top prospect was still on the board.

Karlifornia 02-22-2007 04:11 PM

The End is so bloated and over-indulgent, that it makes Bohemian Rhapsody look like a Ramones tune. I think it's crass and horrible.

I thumb my nose at your selection.

I couldn't have put it any better. Shit pick. The draft is getting easier for some guys because of the few that are falling down on the job.

Subby 02-22-2007 04:13 PM

nomyths list looking great in preseason!

When I think of an epic, I want a tour-de-force, not a tour-de-drunken shirtless greaseball yelling incoherently like a hobo.

I agree, but Light My Fire was a better epic song.

I'd just like to say that the NFL Draft would be 100 times better if after every pick, the other GMs rushed to the ESPN booth to say "Wow, that guy sucks!".

Lathum 02-22-2007 04:25 PM

ROFL

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 04:27 PM

vtbub and lordscarlett, will you be around to make a pick this evening?

I'd watch it. Can you imagine if you had the other's GM snickering every time Matt Millen goes to make a pick, with the "pick a WR, save yourself the trouble!"comments? This seems like something Simmons would like.

If not, I will send in a list and/or designate a backup picker.

OK, let's give Butter a little while to check in.

Jimi's Woodstock rendition of the anthem should've fit in somewhere.

Subby 02-22-2007 04:41 PM

Sent a few picks to Maple Leafs, but I'll be checking in tonight...

lordscarlet 02-22-2007 04:42 PM

Maple Leafs, if you want to keep up with this I can send you an invite to edit it.

MikeVic 02-22-2007 04:43 PM

I like the Freebird pick. I would've gone differently with Hendrix too.

The NFL Draft should have hecklers like this too, I agree.

Butter 02-22-2007 05:08 PM

I'm here, gimme a second.

Butter 02-22-2007 05:23 PM

Classic -
Epic - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen, 1.4
Arena - Rock and Roll (Part Two) - Gary Glitter, 3.4
Trendsetter -
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment - Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols, 2.7

I'm thinking of Arena as more like a sporting event, and nothing gets the crowd going like this (perhaps overplayed) classic. I know I can't resist the fist pump and the "HEY!" every time I hear it.

KevinNU7 02-22-2007 05:28 PM

I can't believe the last few pics.

Subby, if you manage to pick a Foreigner or Journey song next I will have to vote for you just completely based on the music played at the local dive bar I went to in college.

Crapshoot 02-22-2007 05:30 PM

Gary Glitter? Interesting. It wasn't on my radar as a pick in the entire draft. :D

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 05:46 PM

OK, this one is a bit of a reach in the third round, I know that. But the more I think of it, the more I suspect that the "crossover" category is going to be a bitch. You have Walk This Way (picked), Bring Tha Noize (ineligible), and not much else. How many good rock/rap hybrids are there? I can see a run on Limp Bizkit wannabes. Shudder.

Just a tough category. Who came up with these anyways? Put some thought into next time, please.

So ... I'm going with one of the first artists to ever have success in multiple genres: pop and country. Yeah, country is pop now, but back in the day they were completely different and you did one or the other. But this guy had mainstream pop success despite being a country legend. So I'll pick him a little ahead of the curve so that I don't need to spend a late pick on Jay-Z/Linkin Park.

Classic -
Epic -
Arena - 1.7 - Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses
Trendsetter - 2.4 - Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover - 3.5 - Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

Technically Walk the Line was his first major crossover hit, and Boy Named Sue was bigger hit. But I like this song better so go piss up a rope, Mr. Negative.

Surtt 02-22-2007 05:52 PM

I was waiting for some one to take Johnny Cash's Hurt as a cover.

There goes my cover song. This is the line of thought I was in at first for "crossover" until I got the clarification. In my mind this crosses genres as far as charts go, but it's still the same style he always did -- it just began to appeal to a broader audience. Having said that, I don't know where else you go in this category. I will have to think of something other than "Hurt" for my cover song gold. And, for anyone that wants to argue, "Ring of Fire" is an excellent choice for Cash. I considered it for Love Song. :)

See above. :)

I didn't expect Cash to get picked up for crossover and thought I could sleep on him a few more rounds.
