Friday Night Lights, season 1. Had some holes in it preventing it from being as good as some other first seasons that I have watched, but really good overall.
Mad Men, season 1. Still trying to get into it, but it falls towards the bottom of first seasons for me so far, but that's against shows that all of the cool kids are watching(Dexter, BSG, Firefly, etc) so the competition is tough. Firefly. I need to see the movie, but I'm curious to see where the show was going to go. I think that's more intriguing to me versus just sad to see the show cut short. |
SeaQuest DSV. The NBC show from the 90s that's best described as "Star Trek in the ocean." Season 2 is a disaster and Seasons 1 and 3 aren't linked very well. But 1 is all right, Season 3 I actually like a lot better because it's not "all environment all the time." Before they cancelled it. Would be a good show for them to reboot on SyFy.
Star Trek Enterprise: I can see why it got cancelled faster than any of the previous Star Trek show sequels. But it's not awful. |
Started watching a series called Borgia. Not sure what country it's from. Really good stuff so far. I enjoyed The Tudors and this series appears to be hitting a similar spot for me. It's about the Italian families who wielded power in Rome during the late 1400s.
|
Bump....
So what's everybody watching? I'm dissapointed Dexters' not available to stream anymore. I just watched "Breaking Bad" and "Mad Men"... I saw they just added the movie "Limitless" (Bradley Cooper, not bad at all)..... Just overwhelming the amount of stuff available, but most of it's bad. Please post if you see something you enjoyed, or deem worth watching... |

The Confederate States of America
An interesting mockumentary done by a British company looking at the United States 130 years after the south won the Civil War. |
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Breakfast at Tiffany's since I have wanted to watch some old school stuff. I find it interesting to compare how movies were done back then to what we have now.
|
If you're not watching Red Dwarf on a loop, you're basically wasting your television's lifespan.
|
Quote:
We saw Breakfast at Tiffany's last week, too! It's crazy how much they changed from the book, I'm going to have to read it again. |
Quote:
Red Dwarf, Cheers, News Radio, there's a flood of good old TV shows on there right now. |
|

I finally got around to watching this one. Really got into the story, and you are right, it is hard not to cheer for them. Lips can't sing to save his life, and frankly his sound is just 4 decades behind, but I wish with all my heart that I had as much desire to stick in the face of overwhelming opposition to his guns. Great heart. |
My new show of late is White Collar. Sort of got into it by accident, but I'm enjoying it as a crime show of a different sort. A bit too neat, but I like it.
|
|
Special When Lit: A Pinball Documentary got added recently. I haven't watched it yet, but aim to do so on Wednesday or Thursday.
/tk |
Special When Lit is a good one. Some real dedicated pinballers out there.
|
They just added seasons 1-6 of How I Met Your Mother to instant.
Yay. /tk |

Glee just got a new season added. I got sucked in and I can't get out.

Quote:
If it's anything beyond the first full season, it might be easier to get out. I know a guy online that was a hardcore Glee person(all the soundtracks, etc.), but even he admits the show lost some luster during season two. |
Quote:
Season one -- great Season two -- way too preachy and stopped watching Season three -- even more preachy and wife stopped watching |
Quote:
Quote:
Hope not. Disappointing if true. The second season was the one that was added. Really enjoyed the first season. |
Personally, I think Season 3 is great. Far better than Season 2.

Doing Friday Night Lights now. I can dig 90210 w/ football

This. |

I saw somewhere the creator is a huge jerk and if you go against him he screws you over. This has lead to a number of characters going through weird plot lines, or being pushed into the background. I'm not saying it's true, but it might explain some of the reason why the show was off. Quote:
I'm on season three. Not perfect in terms of logic, but solid enough. Season 2 is really hurt by the lack of episodes. It just feels like about 1/2 of a story and then they pick up in season three with near no explanation of certain things. I think once they know they are getting shortened seasons they plan better around it. |
Quote:
This brings back memories. What was the name of the Dolphin again? Darwin? |
Quote:
Season 2 was cut short because of the writers strike. So I think it was written for a full 23 episode season and that's why it seems like the plots didn't play out right. The good news is that it's by far the worst season of the show. 3,4, and 5 are stellar and seem to be written for the shorter season perfectly. |
Quote:
While the football season was bypassed in a rather quick manner, I don't think it was as bad as someone's relationship status going 180 with zero reasoning and actually going against what they had been building up. As much love as Coach Taylor gets, I think Buddy is becoming my favorite character. The underlining storyline for season 4 does feel like a jump the shark type of moment, but it is interesting enough to where it doesn't feel too bad. Random thought on Netflix bringing Firefly back. No, it's not coming back. PHENOMENAUT AEROSPACE, Could Netflix Bring Firefly Back From The Dead? |
OH MY GOD! Sons of Anarchy season 3 is now available on stream - I have checked every week in the last six months waiting for this! WOOOHOOOOO!!!!
|
I watched Exam last night. Pretty interesting psychological thriller, and I loved the twist at the end with the answer to the mystery.
|
Quote:
Just came here to post this. Last year Dish lost FX for about 4 weeks while negotiating new fees and made me miss 4 shows mid-season. Been waiting ever since for netflix to get me caught up. |
Is the League Season 2 available yet?
|
Looks like it is now available.
|
Louie Season 1 added as well
|
The original Girl with a Dragon Tattoo is on streaming.
I went and finished Friday Night Lights. Solid wrap up on the show even if I kept finding more and more little things that bugged me. They seem to be working on a movie, but I honestly can't see why. |
Quote:
I just saw a similar psychological thriller type tonight. Probably not as good as Exam, a little hard to follow, but worth a watch if you like movies like that. Breaking Dawn |
Did they ever explain how Riggins got to be a senior 3 times?
I probably watched 20 episodes in a week, and I really think Minka Kelly is horrible. I can't believe Jeter would deal with her chin for 3 years. |
Quote:
A number of people threw me off in terms of what year they were suppose to be until they graduated. It didn't help that some actors really didn't look their character's age. Even during season 1, there was no way in hell Riggins looked like a high schooler. It certainly didn't help him walking around with a near permanent beer in his hand. I just looked up his age. He was 25 at the time and looked every bit of it. Matt during season one was a sophomore and yet was played by a 24 year old. Most of the main students were played by 24-26 year olds. Only Landry and Julie were played by a 18 and 17 year old respectively during season one. EDIT: Looks like JD McCoy was like 20 when he first appeared. |
Quote:
I enjoyed it as well, but I caught the twist right off the bat. It was still worth watching. |
Quote:
They may have made the age decision on the fly. I doubt a sophomore starts on varsity like that. I went to a super tiny school and that rarely happened. Also I doubt that a senior(Street) would be BFF with a sophomore. |
Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil is on netflix instant now. I highly highly recommend it as one of the funniest movies I've seen. Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine have outstanding chemistry, and this movie deserved a much wider release in theaters.
|
Quote:
I really don't think they expected the show to last that long so they had to sort of improvise when it kept getting renewed. I let it slide because it's a difficult position they were in. One thing I didn't like was how they turned Landry into a football player. Thought his character was unique being the anti-football player in a Texas high school football town. |
Being John Malkovich - I just re-watched this via Netflix, and had clerly forgotten how fond I was/am of it. Now I have a major itch to go back and rewatch Adaptation too.
|
Quote:
Sweet. This is one of those movies I wanted to watch but hadn't been keeping track of it. This just feels like a great Netflix Instant kind of movie. Quote:
At least they didn't make him that good of a football player. |
Watched Season of the Witch last night. Good stuff as long as you don't take it too seriously.
|
Started watching Burn Notice last night. My wife has seen the last couple of seasons, but the Season 1 stuff is new for both of us.
|
As of today, Office Space, African Queen. Both versions of True Grit are available, as is Jingle All the Way, if you are still looking for a holiday movie.
|
Portlandia. I love that show. Season 2 starts this month sometime. Season 1 is now streaming.
|
Blue Mountain St. season 3 is available.
|
If you want a doubleheader, watch The Black Power Mixtape (1967-1975) , which is a documentary using Swedish filmmakers footage from that time with voiceovers from a variety of hip-hop artists like Questlove, Mos Def and others. The most interesting part of it though is the footage itself.
Fire in Babylon is a documentary about the West Indies Cricket Team in the 1970s and their ascent to the top of the world in that sport. It's especially interesting not just about cricket, as well as about the socio-cultural climate of that time. But the cricket footage, interviews with the players of that time right now is also fun. |
I've started watching City Hunter a Korean show.
|
Watched Red Hill, an Australian neo-Western made in 2010.
It was beautifully filmed but cliche-ridden. But I guess that was okay, because aside from a slow start, once the exposition was over, it moved quickly and onwards to its final conclusion. Still, when your protagonist is an emasculated police officer who moved to the country at the bequest of his wife and you start up at your first day on the job missing your gun and showing up late, I'm thinking it's a big hole to dig out of. When an escaped convict who is a half-burned Aborigine who is considered "the best tracker" of Red Hill and quite ruthless with a shotgun comes back to roost, you best believe blood will flow. Still while I connected the dots rather quickly, I wasn't upset at the rather hasty journey. I could tell before some twists that perhaps the violence and ruthlessness was masked by something deeper. You don't really get to know too many of the characters along the way, they merely propel the story forward. So there is no real sense of suspense when it comes to its midway point, you know the characters that are going to stick around and which ones won't be. Yet, the ending did grip me with some emotion, perhaps that was the surprise, even if it was perhaps a play on that emotion. Still a pretty brisk watch that was enjoyable to me. |
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil was a nice surprise...very funny stuff.

Finally got around to seeing Senna. Very much worth the wait.

A great, under-appreciated movie available in Netflix On-Demand is the Richard Pryor movie "Moving". Watched this with my cousin, and we were laughing our asses off.
|
Quote:
I've seen that a few times since it originally came out, yes it is a fantastic comedy. |
Wife and I watched 'The Kill Point'. Good miniseries about a bank robbery gone bad.

Just finished the first season of "Downton Abbey" after hearing about it so much. Now kinda want the Blu-ray.

I'm watching the Korean show Boys Over Flowers. It's a high school drama that so hilariously over dramatic. |
Is that based on the manga of the same name?
|
Quote:
I had been meaning to watch this and you reminded me to. I don't follow Formula One. I probably know more about it then the average American, but not much. I knew the story of his wreck, but not much else. That being said, this was an outstanding documentary. Truly one of the better ones I've seen in a few years. |
Quote:
I didn't realize that it was based on a manga, but I looked it up and yes it is. Seems to be really popular since a Japanese show and Taiwanese show were also made based on it. |
Monkey Shines-Guy gets paralyzed. He gets a smart monkey to help him around the house. At some point the monkey goes crazy and starts killing people that are hurting his master. Stars the guy who plays Bates on Californication and some other nobodies. Directed by George Romero.

Breaking Bad - Finally started watching this last Sunday night and have already burned through 7 episodes. It lives up to the hype.
|
I watched a British series, Stephen Fry in America, where he travels briefly to each state in the US - pretty funny at times as well as entertaining just to see his reaction to some things.
|

I found this British show - Peep Show. Hands down, the funniest show I have seen in years. If you find it a little slow at first, hang with it. I watched all 7 seasons (6 episodes per series) in a week. Lots of cursing but no nudity or anything despite the name. Try it out and let me know what you think. My wife didn't like it but I thought it was fricking great. The show is coming back for season 8 and 9 as well which gives me something to look forward to.
|
Louie Season 1 is on Netflix. If you haven't watched it, you're really missing out. This show is really brutal to watch at times, with how honest it can be. It is refreshing to watch something that wasn't focus grouped to death.
|
Love Breaking Bad.
Love Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil. Thanks for the suggestions in this thread. |
I have started watching Firefly...I missed it when it was on but heard nothing but good about it. So far I like it.
I still laugh out loud about Tucker and Dale moments...just a hilarious movie. |
Quote:
I'm excited about this one, thanks for the tip! /tk |
I just finished watching Special When Lit and Word Wars. I knew I was a nerd, but I have NOTHING on the people featured in these two documentaries. I have to wonder when some of the footage was taken for Special When Lit. It looked like the 80's based on clothes and haircuts, but the film was released in 2009 so it's hard to know without cues in the film. Also, I can't imagine being so focused on Scrabble that I can't hold down a job..

Started watching Boss Season 1. It's...an interesting show. A bit too dark for me, but as my best friend said, episodes 6 & 7 were worth it. Still, the show is a bit too grim for me. Great acting by Kelsey Grammer tho.

I thought Boss Season 1 was part of Starz and that expired?

If you l like that, look at That Mitchell and Webb Look on Netflix. It's sketch comedy with the guys from Peep Show. Some really good sketches in that one (personal favorite are the two football ones) |
High School of the Dead, a fun (if shallow) anime appetizer for tonight's return of The Walking Dead

Quote:
Thanks for the tip. i started watching through this stuff as well. Not quite as good but better than most sketch shows. Good stuff. |
Watched Ironclad. Good show about a segment of England's history I didn't know much about.
|
Like someone earlier, my wife and I finally decide to watch Downton Abbey. We were only going to watch one episode last night...ended up watching 3 straight. Great series. Even the first episode has so much going on. You instantly have characters you like (Anna, the Lord of the house, Bates) and those you don't (I wanted to see Mrs. O'Brien and Thomas get eaten by wolverines by the end of the first episode). We'll probably finish series 1 in the next couple of days then scramble to find series 2 somewhere.

Would someone be able to tell me if Memoirs of a Geisha is streaming on Netflix? Need to watch it for a class. Not available to rent on iTunes or Amazon, so figured Netflix might be a cheaper option.

Quote:
It is not. |

Thanks for checking. |
SENNA

Quote:
I think it is available on PBS.com. I checked it out, and will probably sit down and watch it soon. |
re: Memoirs of a Geisha: You could try to search Red Box near you (you can see if they have it online).
|
Quote:
Yep. That is the ONLY place its on. I guess PBS doesn't contract with Netflix or Amazon or even cable companies (its not OnDemand). Also what sucked is that Netflix only has it in SD. When I watched the 2nd season in HD (it's currently running), I was blown away at how beautiful it looked. Ridiculously gorgeous. |
Quote:
Odd. I know I watched a PBS documentary on there at one point. |
Quote:
There's lots of PBS shows on Netflix. But they don't have the most recent seasons in some cases. |
IIRC those are all released on DVD already.
