w00t Trannies!

Classic - Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin (1-1)
Epic - Freebird, Lynyrd Skynyrd (3-1)
Arena -
Trendsetter -
Love Song - Lola, The Kinks (5-1)
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover - You Really Got Me, Van Halen (4-10)
Anti-Establishment - Fuck Tha Police, N.W.A. (2-10)

Subby wins. Lola is frigging amazing.

ntndeacon 02-23-2007 10:57 AM

I believe this song is better than the original version of the song. The original artist of this song has already been taken...Credence Clearwater Revival. However not only is this a very strong cover song it is also a woman that sings it.

Classic -
Epic - 2.5 - Another Brick in the Wall — Pink Floyd
Arena -
Trendsetter - 1.6 - Good Vibrations - Beach Boys
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover - 4.5-I Can't Stop Loving You--Ray Charles
Cover - 5.6 - Proud Mary--Ike and Tina Turner
Anti-Establishment -3.6-London Calling--The Clash

Warhammer 02-23-2007 10:59 AM

My only issue with the song was when it was picked, not the song or category itself. Actually for Arena Rock, there are a few songs I am surprised are still on the board.

I'm seeing more and more picks where I like the pick, just think it's early...

Makes me think that the few songs left that to me are pretty clear frontrunners might not be and that the draft has become pretty unpredictable.

This time we reach for a love song, and while there are a billion love songs that could be played, I'm taking an older solo Paul McCartney one.

Love- My Love- Paul McCartney 3.7

Is it the 7th inning already?

Have been lurking in this thread, when I read the rules the one song I thought of when I read a category was that one. It's the quintessential cover.

lordscarlet 02-23-2007 11:19 AM

This pick is actually made with some regret and remorse. I have what I feel is a very clever pick for Arena, but I don't want to pull a Houston Texans move here. I can't leave AC/DC on the board when my Arena spot is still empty. With the 8th pick of the fifth round I will take "You Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC.

Classic -
Epic -
Arena - 5.8 - "You Shook Me All Night Long", AC/DC
Trendsetter - 2.3 - "Rapper's Delight", The Sugarhill Gang
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party - 4.3 - "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)", Beastie Boys
Crossover - 1.8 - "Walk This Way", Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith
Cover -Anti-Establishment - 3.8 - "Killing in the Name", Rage Against the Machine

It was taken in the top 3 covers. :) I knew it would come off the board early in the covers list.

Good steal, but I have to think that "Thriller" is the steal of this draft right now.

wade moore 02-23-2007 11:47 AM

FYI: I e-mailed Bucc just now.

cthomer5000 02-23-2007 11:51 AM

Thriller was a mega-steal. Total oversight for me... i hadnt even thought of it but then was like "damn! what a pick!"

KevinNU7 02-23-2007 12:09 PM

If I am judging the lists of 10 against each other then Thriller is a massive steal for Round 5. If I go category by category and compare thriller to the epics that have already been selected then I am less impressed.

Now if I was including music videos in the judging there would be a totally different perspective.

I think we could do this game again and come up with 10 totally different categories - Music Video could certainly be a good one.

Frat Party Song

Picking for Bucc, as a One-Hit-Wonder,
I'll go with "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-a-Lot. The song needs no explanation, and no one's heard from Mix-a-Lot since.

wade moore 02-23-2007 01:40 PM

Not a bad one-hit-wonder pick.

Maple Leafs 02-23-2007 01:41 PM

Bucc e-mailed me a pick for round five, but I'll use it for round six once Oilers has picked.

This category is interesting because the gap from 1-5 in total is probably not as big in my mind as the gap between 5 and 6.

2.8 - Respect - Aretha Franklin

The first three songs are clearly seminal trendsetters, and if the criteria is which song is most directly responsible for a trend, then Smells is right where it belongs. It will be really interesting to see how people react to Smells vs Rappers...Smells is like 100% responsible for a 5 year trend, and Rappers is maybe 85% responsible for a 25 year trend that's been immense for the last decade. The 4th and 5th picks prove why neither of these songs was a trendsetter on the level of the first 3(two trendsetters for one trend?). Respect is a great song, and a solid move in terms of wrapping up a top woman, but I don't think of it as a trendsetter.

Quote:

Epic
1.4 - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
2.1 - American Pie - Don Maclean
2.5 - Another Brick in the Wall — Pink Floyd
2.9 - BaBa O'Reilly (Teenage Wasteland) - The Who

3.7 - Layla - Derrick and the Dominoes - Epic
5.5 - Thriller - Michael Jackson - Epic

Great value as other have mentioned at 5.5. I don't think anybody pulled ahead/fell off much here

Quote:

Arena
1.7 - Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses
3.4 - Rock and Roll (Part Two) - Gary Glitter
3.9 - Born in the U.S.A.- Bruce Springsteen
4.8 - Where the Streets Have No Name - U2
5.8 - You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC

Also a list with a lot of parity. I don't know what to do with the Gary Glitter song...It's a good song to have because it's pervasive, but I feel like picking it so early takes away all it's sleeper value (every roto draft has one guy who drafts every sleeper pick and forgets to draft his studs). Also, I don't know if it fits in this category.

Quote:

Crossover
1.8 - Walk This Way - Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith
3.5 - Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash
4.5 - I Can't Stop Loving You - Ray Charles
4.7 - Superstition - Stevie Wonder

I think this is a list where Walk this way is miles and miles ahead of anything else picked and it's hard for me to imagine anybody will match/top it.

Quote:

Anti-establishment
1.9 - Fight the Power - Public Enemy
2.7 - Anarchy in the UK - The Sex Pistols
2.10 - Fuck Tha Police - N.W.A.
3.6 - London Calling - The Clash
3.8 - Killing in the Name - Rage Against the Machine
4.1 - We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister
5.2 - American Idiot - Green Day
5.3 - Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival

This is a strong list. I'm a Green Day fan but I don't think it has the game to be in this group.

Quote:

Cover
4.4 - I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston
4.10 - You Really Got Me - Van Halen
5.6 - Proud Mary - Ike and Tina Turner

It looks like a minirun on covers, I think Proud Mary is like an A+ and then the next cover is about a B-.

Quote:

One-hit wonder
3.10 - MacLos Del Rio

I think this is a quintessential one hit wonder but from a strategic sense, this is a bad pick...Even if it ends up being the best one hit wonder, this category will be easy to fill with something fairly representative and by it's very nature, you know the artist won't get used for something else.

Quote:

Love Song
4.2 - Imagine - John Lennon
4.9 - At Last - Etta James
5.1 - Lola - The Kinks
5.7 - My Love- Paul McCartney

Imagine is more miscast than most Hollywood movies here.

Quote:

Party
4.3 - Fight for Your Right (to Party) - Beastie Boys
4.6 - 1999 - Prince
5.4 - Celebration - Kool and the Gang

I think all three of these are great picks. The top two are more quinessential artists, but #3 as a song can stand right on par with the other two.

Oilers9911 02-23-2007 01:42 PM

With the 10th pick of the 5th round. I am (not) proud to select, in fact I think I just threw up in my mouth a little....

Love Song - Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On (Theme from Titanic)

Classic - 1.10 Hotel California - The Eagles
Epic - 2.1 American Pie - Don McLean
Arena -
Trendsetter -
Love Song - 5.10 - My Heart Will Go On (Theme from Titanic) - Celine Dion
One-Hit Wonder - 3.10 Macarena - Los Del Rio
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment - 4.1 We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister

Warhammer 02-23-2007 01:43 PM

Uh... Wow...

Oilers9911 02-23-2007 01:46 PM

With the 1st pick of the 6th round I select....

Arena - Rock and Roll All Night - Kiss

Classic - 1.10 Hotel California - The Eagles
Epic - 2.1 American Pie - Don McLean
Arena - Arena - Rock and Roll All Night - Kiss
Trendsetter -
Love Song - 5.10 - My Heart Will Go On (Theme from Titanic) - Celine Dion
One-Hit Wonder - 3.10 Macarena - Los Del Rio
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment - 4.1 We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister

I couldn't disagree with you more here. Those that say Smells was directly responsible for the grunge movement do not know the grunge movement.

Rappers was much more directly responsbile for creating a genre, where Smells played a large part in a genre of trendy music that is basically dead now... To me Rappers is head and shoulders above Smells because it is more responsible AND the trend lasted longer.

"criteria is which song is most directly responsible for a trend,". He's not saying Smells was the first. He's saying it was responsible for the trend.

I agree, I don't see why all the hate for that pick. It might be the most bone jarringly annoying song ever but it's a fairly recent, very popular love song and it gets a woman pick out of the way.

I say that because of the audience that will be voting.

Could be wrong, but I see this board as a group that will have much Celine hatred.

Should I have not mentioned that until AFTER the voting? :)

All Coming Back To Me Now is a better Celine song.

I just had my realization that all of the analysis in the world and masses are going to end up picking lists because their 1 favorite song is on there..

stupid masses..

Subby 02-23-2007 02:20 PM

I am pretty sure Bucc was at Chuck Berry's bar mitzvah...just some added flavor there.

Maple Leafs 02-23-2007 02:20 PM

lordscarlet is on the clock.

lordscarlet 02-23-2007 02:21 PM

Ground control to Major Tom
Ground control to Major Tom
It's time for lordscarlet's Epic Song

This is my biggest gamble yet. I think it's a solid choice, but I'm not sure how everyone else is going to feel about it. Everyone has pretty much diverged from ML's original "Epic" definition to what I feel is more appropriate. A sprawling, involved, lyrical song. With the third pick of the sixth round, I choose "Space Oddity" by David Bowie.

Classic -
Epic - "Space Oddity", David Bowie
Arena - 5.8 - "You Shook Me All Night Long", AC/DC
Trendsetter - 2.3 - "Rapper's Delight", The Sugarhill Gang
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party - 4.3 - "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)", Beastie Boys
Crossover - 1.8 - "Walk This Way", Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith
Cover -Anti-Establishment - 3.8 - "Killing in the Name", Rage Against the Machine

Warhammer 02-23-2007 02:22 PM

Bucc has me scratching my head. Good song but trendsetter?

Maple Leafs 02-23-2007 02:24 PM

Well, that certainly screws me over for this round. Thanks, ass.

Subby 02-23-2007 02:24 PM

Crap I was stronlgy considering Ziggy Stardust for trendsetter...

Warhammer 02-23-2007 02:26 PM

Good one LS.

Wade, that what much of it will boil down to in some categories. Trendsetters, Crossovers, and Anti-Establishment have some arguments that can be made one way or another. The others will to some extent come down to personal taste. How else do you define one song being more epic than another?

That said, the reason why I like that Celine song is it was written by Jim Steinman who I happen to really like.

lordscarlet 02-23-2007 02:26 PM

Whoopi for the block, Tom!

ntndeacon 02-23-2007 02:27 PM

lordscarlet that is an inspired choice. and it fits so well in the epic category

vtbub 02-23-2007 02:29 PM

thinking

Trendsetter is the toughest category to really nail imo. By definition the pool of potentials is so slim, it's pretty good when you can block it in another category when you already have a trendsetter.

I agree with you for how you should really analyze it. I just know FOFC and know that some people won't bother to look at it like that like they should and just say "GNR RULEZ!" or something ;)... not everyone, but a certain portion...

The nature of the beast and part of what makes it fun ;)

Karlifornia 02-23-2007 02:30 PM

I think Kiss' "Rock And Roll All Night" could have fit in solidly as a party song, but it does the trick in the arena category.

As far as Space Oddity Goes, I'm torn. It does have some epic qualities to it, I love the song, and I love David Bowie, but..I dunno.

vtbub 02-23-2007 02:41 PM

I must admit that big hair rock isn't my forte, but in thinking of an Arena song, the energy on the floor must have been prety incredible when this was played, plus it has an infectous quality even if you can't understand the words.

Mariano Rivera's Theme:

Arena- Enter Sandman-Metallica 6.4

Maple Leafs 02-23-2007 02:43 PM

Enter Sandman in round six is the Tom Brady of this draft.

Subby 02-23-2007 02:45 PM

unreal it fell this far

You're right, I struggled with that too but I found I had more party choices than I did arena song choices.

ntndeacon 02-23-2007 02:45 PM

I'm up?

I don't think so at all. First, I think a number of the Arena Rockers picked are certainly above it. And while I love Metallica, and in particular "Enter Sandman", I don't know that that is the top pick for Metallica, not even necessarily the top for Arena Rocker.

lordscarlet 02-23-2007 02:52 PM

I do think getting Metallica anywhere is a great pick, though, much less in the sixth round. I'm very surprised it was so far behind GNR.

ntndeacon 02-23-2007 02:53 PM

Someone said how they thought of my 2nd round pick as a great arena song. I have always viewed it as more an epic, when i think of an arena song, the first thought in my head is inevitably the same each time.

Classic -
Epic - 2.5 - Another Brick in the Wall — Pink Floyd
Arena - 6.5-Do You Feel Like We Do--Peter Frampton
Trendsetter - 1.6 - Good Vibrations - Beach Boys
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover - 4.5-I Can't Stop Loving You--Ray Charles
Cover - 5.6 - Proud Mary--Ike and Tina Turner
Anti-Establishment -3.6-London Calling--The Clash

If I was playing Born to run would have been my first round pick. I am amazed The Boss made it to the end of the 3rd round.

Maple Leafs 02-23-2007 02:58 PM

OK, so I was going take Bowie's Heroes here as my love song. I've had in pencilled in for like three rounds. But noooo.... lordscarlet had to go and ruin it. Way to go, lord. Thanks for being selfish. Prick.

Luckily for me, now that My Heart Will Go On is off the board I can make this pick without worrying about being the biggest wuss of the draft.

Classic -
Epic - 5.5 - Thriller - Michael Jackson
Arena - 1.7 - Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses
Trendsetter - 2.4 - Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley
Love Song - 6.6 Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers
One-Hit Wonder -
Party - 4.6 - 1999 - Prince
Crossover - 3.5 - Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

I love metallica and condidered sandman but IMO that album began the downfall of what was at the time for me the greatest band in the world.
