Ever since this pick was announced, I've been reading it as Gary Gorski.

I'm seeing more and more picks where I like the pick, just think it's early...

Makes me think that the few songs left that to me are pretty clear frontrunners might not be and that the draft has become pretty unpredictable.

This pick is actually made with some regret and remorse. I have what I feel is a very clever pick for Arena, but I don't want to pull a Houston Texans move here. If I am judging the lists of 10 against each other then Thriller is a massive steal for Round 5. If I go category by category and compare thriller to the epics that have already been selected then I am less impressed.

Now if I was including music videos in the judging there would be a totally different perspective.

I think we could do this game again and come up with 10 totally different categories - Music Video could certainly be a good one.

Picking for Bucc, as a One-Hit-Wonder,
I'll go with "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-a-Lot. The song needs no explanation, and no one's heard from Mix-a-Lot since.

Not a bad one-hit-wonder pick.

Bucc e-mailed me a pick for round five, but I'll use it for round six once Oilers has picked.

This category is interesting because the gap from 1-5 in total is probably not as big in my mind as the gap between 5 and 6.


The first three songs are clearly seminal trendsetters, and if the criteria is which song is most directly responsible for a trend, then Smells is right where it belongs. It will be really interesting to see how people react to Smells vs Rappers...Smells is like 100% responsible for a 5 year trend, and Rappers is maybe 85% responsible for a 25 year trend that's been immense for the last decade. The 4th and 5th picks prove why neither of these songs was a trendsetter on the level of the first 3(two trendsetters for one trend?). Respect is a great song, and a solid move in terms of wrapping up a top woman, but I don't think of it as a trendsetter.


Great value as other have mentioned at 5.5. I don't think anybody pulled ahead/fell off much here


Also a list with a lot of parity. I don't know what to do with the Gary Glitter song...It's a good song to have because it's pervasive, but I feel like picking it so early takes away all it's sleeper value (every roto draft has one guy who drafts every sleeper pick and forgets to draft his studs). Also, I don't know if it fits in this category.


I think this is a list where Walk this way is miles and miles ahead of anything else picked and it's hard for me to imagine anybody will match/top it.


This is a strong list. I'm a Green Day fan but I don't think it has the game to be in this group.


It looks like a minirun on covers, I think Proud Mary is like an A+ and then the next cover is about a B-.


I think this is a quintessential one hit wonder but from a strategic sense, this is a bad pick...Even if it ends up being the best one hit wonder, this category will be easy to fill with something fairly representative and by it's very nature, you know the artist won't get used for something else.


Imagine is more miscast than most Hollywood movies here.


I think all three of these are great picks. The top two are more quinessential artists, but #3 as a song can stand right on par with the other two.

I couldn't disagree with you more here. Those that say Smells was directly responsible for the grunge movement do not know the grunge movement.

Rappers was much more directly responsbile for creating a genre, where Smells played a large part in a genre of trendy music that is basically dead now... To me Rappers is head and shoulders above Smells because it is more responsible AND the trend lasted longer.

I think Oilers just killed any shot he had of winning.

Wade, that what much of it will boil down to in some categories. Trendsetters, Crossovers, and Anti-Establishment have some arguments that can be made one way or another. The others will to some extent come down to personal taste. How else do you define one song being more epic than another?

That said, the reason why I like that Celine song is it was written by Jim Steinman who I happen to really like.

Trendsetter is the toughest category to really nail imo. By definition the pool of potentials is so slim, it's pretty good when you can block it in another category when you already have a trendsetter.


I agree with you for how you should really analyze it. I just know FOFC and know that some people won't bother to look at it like that like they should and just say "GNR RULEZ!" or something ;)... not everyone, but a certain portion...

I think Kiss' "Rock And Roll All Night" could have fit in solidly as a party song, but it does the trick in the arena category.

As far as Space Oddity Goes, I'm torn. It does have some epic qualities to it, I love the song, and I love David Bowie, but..I dunno.

I must admit that big hair rock isn't my forte, but in thinking of an Arena song, the energy on the floor must have been prety incredible when this was played, plus it has an infectous quality even if you can't understand the words.

I don't think so at all. First, I think a number of the Arena Rockers picked are certainly above it. And while I love Metallica, and in particular "Enter Sandman", I don't know that that is the top pick for Metallica, not even necessarily the top for Arena Rocker.

I do think getting Metallica anywhere is a great pick, though, much less in the sixth round. I'm very surprised it was so far behind GNR.

Someone said how they thought of my 2nd round pick as a great arena song. I have always viewed it as more an epic, when i think of an arena song, the first thought in my head is inevitably the same each time.
