Was hoping someone would take him. Easily my all time favorite arcade game: Ghost's n Goblins. I think I'd have been a millionaire if I'd saved my quarters instead of plunking them into that machine. There was a machine right next to the GnG machine that I wish someone would pick a character (any character!) from. I won't say what it is because I know some don't like that, but I want to so badly :)

mauchow 01-30-2004 01:31 PM

Mann.. I missed the Bad Dudes pick? I was wondering when they'd be picked. Like someone said, I used to play hours and hours of this game at the arcade, except my older brother and I beat it together. We're BAD DUDES.

IMO, awesome picks :)

I was thinking the same for the excitebike guy. Awesome pick. lol For this late, yeah..

Should Have Gone: Amanda Huggenkiss- I really think it was the funniest of Bart's many prank calls. Barney gets a great retort ("Maybe your standards are too high!") and it's well integrated into the plot. The only downside is that it doesn't sound like a real name at all. Even better is that the episode (9F06-"New Kid on the Block") has two prank calls in it.

SI

Among people who've played that game, he gets consistently picked as their favorite gaming character of all time. Maybe a stretch at round 4, but there's been plenty stuff going that to me isn't very high in value. All a matter of taste I suppose. :p

Ramzavail 01-30-2004 02:18 PM

Im assuming you are talking about Ryu. I am a huge SF fan, and I always chose Ryu - I just waited too long to pick him in this draft :)

Hadoken !!!
Tatsu Maki Sempukiaki !!!

TargetPractice6 01-30-2004 02:19 PM

I think he meant Ryu from Ninja Gaiden.

TargetPractice6 01-30-2004 02:19 PM

Dola-

Either way it doesn't matter. I have both of them :D

Ramzavail 01-30-2004 02:26 PM

Heh my bad!

Hayabusa!

Desnudo 01-30-2004 02:30 PM

Actually I was talking about SI undeservedly lambasting my Dante pick. I just hope the voting public shows a little more respect. ;)

Maple Leafs 01-30-2004 02:48 PM

Ice's three hours are up.

If the next drafters in line wanted to jump in, be my guest.

Danny 01-30-2004 03:00 PM

TP, you're up.

Desnudo, I think your pick was solid actually.

Thank you. Vote Desnudo in 04'.

TargetPractice6 01-30-2004 03:13 PM

I'll take...

Ness, Earthbound

Danny 01-30-2004 03:31 PM

This hero is form one of the most classic arcade hits. This game was the first ever to allow the user to create their own paths, thus this game one of most influential of all time as well. There has also been two sequals giving the character even more longevity.

I am proud to select

Dig Dug

It's about time. That's a third or fourth round talent, great value this late.

Calis 01-30-2004 03:40 PM

With my next pick I had a tough choice to make, I knew it had to be one of two people, both of whom starred in my favorite NES evah! The baddest of the bad, the guys who mixed old school side scroller fighting games with a splash of RPG..I will select...

Alex

River City Ransom

It was tough, but in the end I chose Alex over Ryan for no particular reason at all aside from the fact he's usually the one I ended up as when one of my friends and I played this game, which happened often..hell, it still does. This game still rocks even today.

I believe they are doing a remake for the GBA as well, so keep on the lookout for that.

albionmoonlight 01-30-2004 03:49 PM

My turn.

George (the Ape from Rampage)

Vince 01-30-2004 03:50 PM

Dude, Ryan is SO better than Alex...it's his girlfriend they're fighting for, for crying out loud.

Great pick though...Ryan was my #3 choice sent to Maple Leafs.

Maple Leafs 01-30-2004 03:53 PM

We seem to have ourselves an arcade run...

Menudo is on the clock.

Yeah, yeah..I probably should've went with Ryan..but c'mon, Alex was one bad mofo. He just seemed to be the ass kicker of the group. It was a tough call.

Man I loved that game.

Ramzavail 01-30-2004 04:01 PM

George from Rampage is a great pick.

Maple Leafs 01-30-2004 04:02 PM

A few people sent in lists that included him as a backup pick. Here's a question: why did everyone pick George, instead of Ralph or Lizzie.

Dear god, why do I know their names?

albionmoonlight 01-30-2004 04:04 PM

What's funny is that in my mind, there is a clear hierarchy:

1.) George
2.) Lizzie
3.) Ralph

I have no idea why this is, but it is.

Also--I got one of the Rampage guys in a late round! Whoo--hoo!

Maple Leafs 01-30-2004 04:16 PM

I have a pick ready for Desnudo, but I think I'll wait to see if he shows up. Last time he went with someone other than the guy he'd sent me, so I see no reason to rush things with the weekend here.

No time limits over the weekend, but please PM a pick or two if you know you won't be checking in so that we don't stall on one guy for three days.

sabotai 01-30-2004 04:21 PM

Wasn't George the default character when starting a game of Rampage? I think he was also the one spotlighted on the box.

This got me thinking. A friend and I were talking about the hardest (within reason) games to beat. We both agreed the original TMNT (they started as a comic so I figured it was safe to bring them up) game for the NES was insane. Another that comes to mind is Zelda 2 as the last level is nuts. Then again, this is really nebulous because we both kept coming up with awful games but decided that most were not "within reason" since there were a lot of really crappy games made back in those days where the devs weren't even trying.

My favorite of the "ancient" games is Centipede. I can think of about 5 games I spent a decent chunk of change on ($10 is a decent chunk of change when you're 8- but that was spread across lots of visits to arcades, laundromats, etc) and that was the oldest. A couple of others are Road Blasters, TMNT: Arcade, and Area 51 :)

SI

Desnudo 01-30-2004 04:35 PM

I'm here, give me a sec please.

Desnudo 01-30-2004 04:39 PM

I'll select my favorite character from Mortal Combat, Scorpion. By far the best move with that spike on a rope yank.

Danny 01-30-2004 04:42 PM

That's a good pick. Him and Sub Zero are my favorites from the game.

albionmoonlight 01-30-2004 04:46 PM

As ML knows, Scorpion was the next to go off my list. Amazing value in this round considering people were mentioning his name in round 2.

Vince 01-30-2004 04:47 PM

Because I wasn't able to this morning...

Joe Musashi, Shinobi
One of the mainstays of Sega, Joe starred in a plethora of games (at least twelve, spanning Sega, Game Gear, Game Boy Advance, and now the newest game, which is going to be on the 'next-gen' platforms), and was always a bad-ass. Wielding a sword that thirsted for blood, the sword would not be satisfied if there was no one around, so Joe himself would be hurt.

The Guy on the Bike in Excitebike -
By far the greatest motorcycle game ever, in my mind, and this guy was hoss. You could do anything, and he'd scramble back over to the bike, hop on, and continue as if nothing ever happened. Land on his head after clearing a full screen-and-a-half's worth of track? No worries, he just falls a little further from the bike. And any time one of those retarded computer drones was pissing you off, just nail their front tire with your back tire, and he's a memory. Great game, and I'm glad to have this guy on my squad :)

Danny 01-30-2004 04:47 PM

He was on my short list for my next pick as well although he wasn't at the top.

Maple Leafs 01-30-2004 04:50 PM

My two picks...

For my first pick, I'll briefly interrupt the arcade run to take a platform guy. He's not a legend, but he's vaguely recognizable by non-video game fans and had a decent run as a franchise player, with a few sequels. I believe he also had a TV show.

My seventh pick is Earthworm Jim.

Now let's go back to the arcades. This pick my be a bit of a reach, but in the late rounds he's worth a pickup. No personality to speak of, since he didn't talk (or even move, come to think of it). But he was a great boss from one of the best, most under-rated arcade games of all time. A giant, floating head who could spit some sort of weird acid out of his mouth and took freaking forever to beat. He had a few sequels, too. Not a bad career.

My eighth round pick us DOH, from Arkanoid

Man I loved Excitebike, one of my favorite NES games. I used to waste many summer afternoons playing that.

Desnudo 01-30-2004 05:01 PM

I select The Warrior, Diablo

albionmoonlight 01-30-2004 05:02 PM

Now I'm torn between two . . .

albionmoonlight 01-30-2004 05:06 PM

I'm picking this guy because I think I need someone on my squad who can deal with anything. And this guy certainly is no stranger to bizzare situations. Besides, with him on board, I'll have the best training table of all the teams.

Chef (from Burger Time).

Vince 01-30-2004 05:07 PM

Nice pick albion...I actually thought of him a while back and had him tucked away as a potential sleeper, strangely enough :)

Calis 01-30-2004 05:21 PM

Alright...this was another tough pick as there were really two guys I was debating over picking. It came down to a battle of Console vs. PC, and in the end I've decided to go with the console pick....

Pit

Kid Icarus

This was one of the best NES games around imo. I'd rank it right up there with Mario Brothers and Metroid, and was along the same lines. It even added in a few RPG elements with the ability go gain extra life ala Zelda, and other goodies. Plus is was just such a great mixture of different genres, you scrolled up..you scrolled to the side..you played a shooter...you got turned into an eggplant. What more could you want?

Anyway, tons of fond memories from this game..not too mention the frustration it caused. One of the all time classics, and a game Nintendo REALLY needs to make a sequel to.

Danny 01-30-2004 05:29 PM

I have no choice, but to finally pull the trigger. The pick kept falling, falling and falling, but will fall no more. I do believe more people have panicked over getting this guy than any other in any video game in history. Ladies and Gentlemen. I select the

Straight Bar from Tetris

albionmoonlight 01-30-2004 05:40 PM

Which brings up an interesting question. 10 seconds left . . . down by 2 . . . crowd on its feet . . . dribbling up the court . . .who do you want taking the final shot? Straight Bar from Tetris or Dig Dug?

Danny 01-30-2004 05:59 PM

How about an alley oop from dig dug to the straight bar.

Vince 01-30-2004 06:01 PM

You gotta go to the playmaker...the straight bar drops a Tetris on you...can't beat that.

Danny 01-30-2004 06:04 PM

After my questionable 2nd round choice, my picks of Kirby, Bomberman, Sephiroth, Alucard, Dig Dug and the Straight Bar rank as good as anyone in the draft IMO. You guys probably agree, right :)

Ramzavail 01-30-2004 06:18 PM

I cant believe my next two picks were just taken - Earthworm Jim and Pit - I never would have thought somebody would have picked Earthworm Jim and Pit was the man

Great picks guys.

TargetPractice6 01-30-2004 06:22 PM

Damn! I was just thought of Pit. I came here to look and he was just taken... :(

I completely forgot about that guy. I loved that game.

Rygar

TargetPractice6 01-30-2004 07:17 PM

I don't really like the straight bar pick. I mean that's not a character in any way. But hey, that's just me.

I am not too fond of it either.

P.S. Since Ice still hasn't taken his pick from last round, I have no objection if Corbes wants to jump in ahead of him this time around.

ice4277 01-31-2004 12:01 AM

Yikes. Where did the day go? I have been out and about for the last 16 hours and totally missed my pick. Not the end of the world though, as none of my picks have gone off the board. With my seventh round pick I will take:

Warrior (Golden Axe)

The best character from one of the best early side-scrolling action games, I dropped countless quarters playing this at the arcade, as well as spending a ton of time playing the Genesis version.

JeffNights 01-31-2004 12:10 AM

And SUPERMAN would be the late round sleeper i guess.

corbes 01-31-2004 12:11 AM

Wow.

George, Kid Icarus, and a character from Golden Axe.

What an absolute ransacking of my plans. ML can attest. I didn't have Kid Icarus on that list because I was playing that pick close to the vest. Albion totally snagged it. Great pick.

I don't have a ready pick lined up, now. Hang on.

ice4277 01-31-2004 12:11 AM

OK, for my eighth pick, I select:

Dinosaur (Bubble Bobble)

Perhaps not well known on an individual basis, one look at http://taito.overclocked.org/ shows a total of 25 games this character has appeared in. Quantity should count for something, especially this late in the draft.

corbes 01-31-2004 12:24 AM

mmmkay

On that note, I'm going to take

Player 1 from Pole Position

That's not the right form of character. That's like talking about a person's individual character. This is the definition I was thinking of: "A person portrayed in an artistic piece, such as a drama or novel." Not that it matter sthough, as I'm not going to dispute your pick or anything.

Maple Leafs 01-31-2004 12:49 PM

Let's not get caught up in the rules. If we're allowing the line from Pong, I think everything is fair game. Choosing the straight bar was just a way to get some mention of Tetris in... he could have picked the weird little dancing Russian guy and got the same effect.

Danny 01-31-2004 12:58 PM

Besides, how do we know that the straight bar really isn't a slovakian robot named Chetsche?

I'm playing a couple nintendo games right now that have characters that have been unselected. But I don't know how popular they actually are, you know....

I'll give a hint for just one of them...

I'll give you the initials for the game:

RCPA (2 of them are already initials for the game itself.. figure it out)

Ramzavail 01-31-2004 10:41 PM

I will select

Heihachi Mishima - Tekken 1-4, Tekken Tag Tourney, Soul Calibur II (PS2)

SirFozzie 02-01-2004 02:31 AM

Before we make folks heads explode with the massive offtopicness..

My next selection: Jill Valentine, Resident Evil Series.

cthomer5000 02-01-2004 10:25 AM

QB Eagles, Tecmo Super Bowl

The guy was absolutely unstoppable. A good passer with running speed that put him amongst the fastest running backs in the game.

This "character" is also the center of the most video game stories for me personally. I still detest one of my best friends for injuring him in the NFC title game, and beating me to destroy my undefeated (15-0-1) season. It was a genuine tragedy.

If this pick comes under protest and is denied, i will make a new selection.

SirFozzie 02-01-2004 10:28 AM

We all know QB Eagles is/was Cunningham. I don't think that's a valid choice.

Sun Tzu 02-01-2004 10:37 AM

Agreed, nice try homer.

What??? I thought Richie Cunningham was the star of Happy Days?

cthomer5000 02-01-2004 11:49 AM

boooooooooooooooooo. you guys are no fun at all.

I don't know who this Randal Cunningham is that you speak of, as he does not appear in the video game of which I speak.

Danny 02-01-2004 12:09 PM

I say he should get it. After all, we all know the player one line from pong is based off of Richard Nixon and we allowed that.

Vince 02-01-2004 12:17 PM

QB Bills was better anyways ;)

Ramzavail 02-01-2004 12:51 PM

Im on the fence about the pick. I will stay out of it.

Edit: QB Bills was not better.

cthomer5000 02-01-2004 01:19 PM

Well, whoever is next should just go. If my pick is ruled illegal, i'll just make up the pick in next round.

Maple Leafs 02-01-2004 01:34 PM

I'm not going to allow the QB Eagles pick.

If this was an original pick, I'd probably give credit for finding a loophole in the rules, appluad the creativity and allow it. But since QuikSand mentioned it all the way back on page one, it's really just a piggyback pick. So no, the pick is not valid. Final answer.

(Does that make sense? Not really, but since when did you want logic in a video game character draft.)

Danny 02-01-2004 01:36 PM

I agree with the decision due to your reasoning.

I'm afraid Mrs. Manner's husband, Mr. Grammar, is actually correct here, technically speaking. :D You could say a thing has a lot of character, like a glass of wine, but you wouldn't say what a great character it was.

Vince 02-01-2004 04:12 PM

Ok, I'm going to make my picks, since I'm not going to be around for much of tonight or tomorrow. If it turns out cthomer was going to pick one of these guys, then I'll retract the pick and fix it later.

Ok, my squad was highly lacking in the RPG category, so I'm going with two greats here. The first is one of the best and most underrated characters from the Final Fantasy franchise. I give you...

Cid
http://images.google.com/images?q=tb...ll/FF7/Cid.jpghttp://images.google.com/images?q=tb...re.com/cid.jpg

Appearing in every Final Fantasy game outside of the original, Cid was the standby in every Final Fantasy game as the master of the airship. Usually not a mainstream character or much of a fighter, Cid was always an interesting plot element.

And with my next pick...

Erdrick, Dragon Warrior
http://images.google.com/images?q=tb...t/hero_ico.gif

Ok, I couldn't find a picture of him, because I don't think one exists, but you get the gist. Dragon Warrior was one of my favorite Nintendo games of all time, and Erdrick was your ancestor. Throughout the game, you had to acquire various items that he used back in the day to defeat the Dragon Lord to stand a chance against him. Great game :)

Love 'em or hate 'em, these picks were more because I wanted them on my squad than because I thought they were 'great picks.'

EDIT - Ok, anyone want to help me out? The pics won't work :(

TargetPractice6 02-01-2004 04:42 PM

The Cid in each Final Fantasy is a different character you know.

Thats the problem with Cid - it was a different character and different looking character every time - the only constant was that there was a character named "Cid", maybe in every one - not sure about that one.

Well, I do know that it is a different character every time, but I liked that he was always in it. Anyhow...bump for cthomer tomorrow.

Now I can genuinely curse QuikSand. The minute I joined the draft I had him in mind... that robot bastard blew it for me.

Ok, I select Dr. Wily from the Mega Man series.

cthomer5000 is still on the clock, since Vince pre-picked for this two spots.

Vince, please clarify which Cid you're talking about.

I thought that was your eight round pick. Vince made his two, meaning it would be back to you for your ninth rounder.

Ok, if I have to clarify...

I'll go with FF IV Cid (Final Fantasy II to us US blokes).

Sorry, i guess the list wasn't updated when I looked at it... I obviously got confused.
