A tough choice here, as there are songs I'd prefer to have earlier, but that "two songs sung by women" rule is going to bite some folks in the tail. I'm going to avoid the coming crunch by taking one one of the most popularly beloved and critically important songs by a woman artist. The song has it all -- social consciousness, the civil rights era backdrop, an African-American woman demanding her due...and it rocks, too. Every female vocalist in the modern era walks the trail this song blazed. I also get bonus points for having seen her perform it. With that:

Classic - 1.3 - Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
Epic -
Arena -
Trendsetter - 2.8 - Respect - Aretha Franklin
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

Roffle - I almost wrote that as a prediction for you. Interesting pick.

lordscarlet 02-22-2007 03:27 PM

It's interesting that two of the trendsetters have been cover songs. :)

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 03:27 PM

Very worthy choice for first female.

st.cronin 02-22-2007 03:28 PM

I like the Aretha pick.

Lathum 02-22-2007 03:29 PM

Classic -
Epic - BaBa O'reilly ( also known as teenage wasteland)- The Who 2.9
Arena -
Trendsetter - Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana- 1.2
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

This song just rocks. Period. You can be anywhere this song is playing and not see someone playing air guitar. One of the most recognizable guitar riffs ever.

From the rules: At least two of your songs must be sung by a female

Subby 02-22-2007 03:31 PM

Yeah. R.I.F.

Yeah, I just don't see hwo that can work.

st.cronin 02-22-2007 03:34 PM

There are two artists that I am just shocked that they haven't been picked yet.

Subby 02-22-2007 03:35 PM

When I first heard this song I was just shocked. I had never heard something so completely in-your-face and raw (yes, I was raised on white classic rock). It opened my eyes to the mistrust and anger felt by many memebers of the black community toward the police (clueless was I). My memory is fuzzy, but it seems like I heard this around the time of the LA Riots. In any event, I was in my college years for both. My pick is the anti-establishment anthem Fuck Tha Police by N.W.A.

Classic - Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin 1-1
Epic -
Arena -
Trendsetter -
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment - Fuck Tha Police, N.W.A. 2-10

st.cronin 02-22-2007 03:37 PM

Over blank by blank? uh, wow.

Lathum 02-22-2007 03:38 PM

Interesting. I had this on my "Where the hell can I fit this in?" list. And I had Pinball Wizard as my top Epic choice.

Someone remind St. Cronin not to bing up potential future picks. oops I guess I just did :)

one was a real song, actual anger. the other was an exploitative attempt to ride the coattails of the other.

Fuck Tha Police predated the other by two years. The lyrics are just as incendiary.

By the time -------- came out the alternative rock and gangsta rap were in full swing and the environment was more receptive than it had been when Fuck Tha Police came out.

Yes but which one was actually CENSORED? Consider the category.

NoMyths 02-22-2007 03:44 PM

Get on with your next pick, Subbs. ;)

Actually three if you count Rock Around the Clock (some debate over that, but they weren't the first to record it).

If a cover can't be a trendsetter, what about something like Rapper's Delight that uses extensive sampling? I don't see how something has to be unique or even original to start a trend.

Seriously - weren't you like 2 years old then?

Fuck Tha Police got NO airplay on the radio or MTV. It was completely underground. It had the word Fuck in the title and if you google it is still listed as F--- Tha Police in many instances.

The other song was covered by Kurt Loder every day for like three months.

NoMyths 02-22-2007 03:48 PM

Trends don't check with artists to find out if they wrote the song themselves.

Fat Man and Little Boy weren't the first atomic devices built. :)

There is no freaking way I am going to pass up the chance to have both Freebird and Stairway on my team. The pairing is so freaking sublime that I might have to go build a bong in shop real quick just so I can get high off of this recycled office paper.

So yes, I am picking Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd as my epic song. Because it is so effing epic. I have a better arena song for the down the line. Plus the extended jam is so great.

Note: They also have a killer Behind the Music.

Classic - Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin (1-1)
Epic - Freebird, Lynyrd Skynyrd (3-1)
Arena -
Trendsetter -
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment - Fuck Tha Police, N.W.A. (2-10)

The Jerky Boys were more underground than NWA. Every kid in my high school had that tape.

NoMyths 02-22-2007 03:53 PM

Well, I'm definitely going to vote you number one for Most Pandering, Subby. :)

st.cronin 02-22-2007 03:53 PM

Can't believe Freebird fell out of the 1st round.

Fair point.. the more I think about it, the less the covers as trendsetters bothers me... it seems unnatural, but I can't argue agaisnt any of those being trendsetters.

Cool...do I get a pretty tiara with that? If so...awesome!

Lathum 02-22-2007 03:57 PM

Classic -Foxy Lady- Jimi Hendrix- 3.2
Epic - BaBa O'reilly ( also known as teenage wasteland)- The Who 2.9
Arena -
Trendsetter - Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana- 1.2
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

Most of Classic song's selected so far can be put in a similar catergory, I wanted to find something that rocks a little more but has withstood th test of time. I waffled back and forth between a few different picks but I didn't think I would get another shot at Jimi.

Shit - I was really hoping Hendrix lasted till my pick. I would have gone with All Along the Watchtower as the cover, IMO, or Hey Joe.

While those are great songs I am trying to keep in mind what will appeal to the masses

We'll continue the draft over evenings/weekends, although of course we'll expect longer delays between picks.

Please PM me a few picks if you're not going to be checking in outside of work hours.
